Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Board

Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Board
Adrian Blackwell smiled as though he had just walked into a business meeting.
Not a crime scene.
Not a hallway filled with terrified children.
Not a mansion on the verge of becoming a battlefield.
His polished shoes clicked softly against the concrete.
Every step echoed with quiet confidence.

No one moved.
No one spoke.
Even the armed men at the entrance lowered their rifles ever so slightly.
Not because they trusted him.
Because they answered to him.
Adrian stopped several feet from Ethan.
His gray eyes settled on the frightened little boy.
Then on the little girl standing beside me.
Finally, they returned to Ethan.
"I've been looking forward to this conversation."
Ethan held his son closer.
"I have nothing to say to you."
Adrian nodded.
"I expected that."
He smiled politely.
"But you'll listen anyway."
Victor stepped forward.
"Adrian."
His voice carried something unfamiliar.
Not fear.
Regret.
Adrian glanced at him.
"My oldest mistake."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"I built this company with integrity."
"You turned it into a criminal enterprise."
Adrian chuckled.
"No."
"I simply removed the illusion."
He slowly looked around the hidden hallway.
"Corporations don't have consciences."
"They have shareholders."
"They have assets."
"They have liabilities."
His eyes landed on Ethan's son.
"And sometimes..."
"They have inconvenient heirs."
The little boy buried his face in his father's chest.
Ethan's breathing grew heavier.
"You'll never touch him again."
Adrian tilted his head.
"You still think this is about your son."
"It isn't."
He reached into his jacket.
The security officers immediately aimed their weapons.
Adrian calmly removed a thin digital tablet.
He pressed the screen once.
A company organization chart appeared.
Hundreds of names.
Departments.
Executive branches.
Financial divisions.
The chart looked ordinary.
Until red circles began appearing.
One after another.
Board members.
Chief legal officers.
Financial auditors.
Outside consultants.
Private investigators.
Judges.
State regulators.
The list continued.
Nearly every major decision-maker connected to Hale-Winters Industries had been highlighted.
Adrian turned the screen toward Ethan.
"You spent years believing you were the chairman."
He smiled.
"You were never in charge."
Ethan stared at the chart.
"What is this?"
"The truth."
Adrian zoomed in.
Every highlighted executive was connected by thin blue lines.
The lines all led to one place.
A private holding company.
Blackwell Strategic Holdings.
Victor closed his eyes.
"So that's how you did it."
Adrian nodded.
"Very quietly."
"Very patiently."
"For eighteen years."
One of the security guards whispered,
"Eighteen years?"
Adrian looked pleased.
"The best takeovers happen so slowly..."
"...that nobody realizes they've already lost."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"You manipulated my board."
"I created your board."
"You forged documents."
"I wrote the policies."
"You kidnapped my son."
"I protected my investment."
The last sentence sent a wave of disgust through the hallway.
The little girl looked at Adrian with terrified eyes.
"You're a monster."
For the first time...
His smile faded.
He looked directly at her.
"No."
"I'm efficient."
She stepped behind me.
I instinctively moved in front of both children.
Adrian noticed.
"You must be the waitress."
I didn't answer.
"You've complicated several years of careful planning."
"I found a frightened child."
"You uncovered company property."
My stomach turned.
"He's not property."
"He is to investors."
Ethan exploded.
"My son is not an investment!"
His voice thundered through the corridor.
Adrian remained perfectly calm.
"Everything has value."
"Everything has a price."
"Even love."
Ethan lunged forward.
Two security guards caught him before he reached Adrian.
"Sir!"
"Don't!"
Ethan struggled against them.
"I'll kill him!"
Adrian smiled again.
"There he is."
"The emotional father."
"The exact weakness we predicted."
Victor stepped beside Ethan.
"Don't give him what he wants."
Ethan's breathing slowly steadied.
Adrian looked almost disappointed.
"That's better."
"I'd hate to end this too quickly."
The little boy peeked over Ethan's shoulder.
"Why are you doing this?"
The innocent question echoed through the hallway.
Adrian actually looked at him.
For a brief second...
His expression softened.
Then it disappeared.
"Because your father built something extraordinary."
"And extraordinary things attract extraordinary greed."
The child frowned.
"I don't understand."
"I know."
Adrian quietly looked away.
For just an instant...
I thought I saw guilt in his eyes.
It vanished too quickly to be certain.
A phone vibrated inside Adrian's pocket.
He answered immediately.
"Yes."
He listened for several seconds.
His expression changed.
Not panic.
Annoyance.
"I understand."
He ended the call.
Victor noticed.
"What happened?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He looked directly at Ethan.
"It appears we've encountered another problem."
"What problem?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then smiled again.
"Your wife."
Every muscle in Ethan's body tensed.
"What about Emily?"
"We've lost contact with the team watching her."
Hope flickered across Ethan's face for the first time all night.
"She's alive."
Adrian shrugged.
"Probably."
Victor looked stunned.
"You never actually found her?"
Adrian laughed softly.
"We found her many times."
"We simply never managed to keep her."
The statement confused everyone.
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian sighed.
"It means..."
"Your wife has been escaping us..."
"...for almost six years."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Ethan stared.
"Escaping?"
"Repeatedly."
Victor looked genuinely shocked.
"I thought she was in protective custody."
Adrian smiled.
"So did everyone else."
The security captain slowly lowered his weapon.
"Who exactly is Emily Winters?"
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
Almost amused.
"You still haven't figured it out."
He turned back toward them.
"Emily wasn't just Ethan's wife."
"She was the lead forensic accountant investigating corporate fraud inside Hale-Winters Industries."
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even blinked.
The revelation hit like an earthquake.
Ethan's memories suddenly crashed together.
Late nights.
Locked office doors.
Confidential files.
Emily insisting she couldn't discuss work.
Her growing fear during the months before the "accident."
She hadn't been hiding work from him.
She had been trying to protect him.
"My God..."
His voice barely existed.
"She found you."
Adrian nodded once.
"She found everything."
Victor whispered,
"That's why she disappeared."
Adrian corrected him.
"No."
"That's why we tried to make her disappear."
The hallway shook violently.
Not from an explosion.
From somewhere beneath them.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
The concrete floor vibrated.
Everyone instinctively grabbed the wall for balance.
The security captain frowned.
"What was that?"
Another tremor followed.
Stronger this time.
One of the tactical soldiers at the entrance suddenly spoke into his radio.
His face turned pale.
"Sir..."
Adrian looked at him.
"What is it?"
"The underground garage..."
The soldier swallowed.
"It's been breached."
Adrian frowned for the first time.
"By who?"
The soldier slowly lowered his radio.
"I don't know."
"But..."
"They're using your access codes."
Before Adrian could respond...
The mansion's speakers crackled back to life.
A calm female voice echoed through every corridor.
Crystal clear.
Confident.
Impossible.
"Attention."
"This is Emily Winters."
Every person in the hallway froze.
Ethan stopped breathing.
His son's eyes grew wide.
The voice continued.
May you like
"If you're hearing this..."
"I'm finally coming home."
