Chapter 11: The Daughter We Never Knew

Chapter 11: The Daughter We Never Knew

The underground chamber fell into stunned silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Every eye remained fixed on the monitor.

The teenage girl stood beside Emily.

She looked frightened.

But there was something unmistakably familiar about her.

The same deep green eyes.

The same determined expression.

The same small dimple on her left cheek that appeared whenever she tried not to cry.

Ethan felt the world tilt beneath him.

"No..."

The word barely escaped his lips.

His son looked up at him.

"Daddy?"

Ethan couldn't answer.

His eyes never left the screen.

Emily gently wrapped an arm around the teenager.

"This wasn't how I wanted you to find out."

Her voice trembled.

"But we don't have another choice."

The girl lowered her eyes.

She looked uncomfortable.

Almost guilty.

Emily continued.

"Ethan..."

"You remember the night of the accident."

He nodded instinctively.

"Yes."

"You remember I was seven months pregnant."

His breathing stopped.

A forgotten memory forced its way back.

Hospital visits.

Baby clothes.

A nursery they had painted together.

The pregnancy.

He remembered all of it.

Then the crash.

The fire.

The funeral.

Doctors telling him that neither Emily nor the unborn baby had survived.

His knees nearly gave out.

"My God..."

Emily closed her eyes for a moment.

"The baby survived."

Tears rolled down Ethan's face.

"No..."

"They told me..."

"I know."

"They lied."

The teenage girl finally looked directly into the camera.

Her voice was soft.

"My name is Grace."

She hesitated.

"I've wanted to meet you my whole life."

Ethan's hands shook uncontrollably.

"You..."

He struggled to speak.

"You're my daughter?"

Grace nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The little boy stared at the monitor in confusion.

"I have a sister?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"You do."

The little boy's face lit up despite everything happening around him.

"I always wanted one."

Grace smiled for the first time.

A small.

Nervous smile.

"I always wanted a little brother."

Even Agent Ross quietly looked away.

Some moments deserved privacy.

Victor removed his glasses.

He wiped tears from his eyes.

"I never knew."

Emily looked into the camera.

"Nobody did."

"The Circle believed I lost the baby."

"I made sure they believed it."

Ethan frowned.

"How?"

Emily looked toward Grace.

"There was another woman in the maternity ward."

"She had lost her baby during childbirth."

"She volunteered to help us."

Ross slowly pieced it together.

"You switched identities."

Emily nodded.

"The hospital records were altered."

"Grace disappeared before anyone knew she existed."

Victor whispered,

"You protected her."

Emily smiled sadly.

"For as long as I could."

Ethan looked at Grace again.

"So why now?"

Grace answered before Emily could.

"Because they found us."

The room became quiet again.

Emily nodded.

"They discovered Grace's identity three weeks ago."

Ross frowned.

"How?"

Emily hesitated.

"There was a leak."

Victor looked devastated.

"I'm sorry."

Emily looked directly at him.

"It wasn't you."

Adrian Blackwell's weak laughter suddenly echoed from behind them.

Everyone turned.

Even injured and handcuffed, he managed to smile.

"You still don't understand."

Ross aimed his weapon toward him.

"Be quiet."

Adrian ignored him.

"There wasn't one leak."

"There were dozens."

He looked toward Ethan.

"The Circle always knew about Grace."

Emily's expression changed instantly.

"What?"

Adrian laughed again.

"They simply weren't interested."

Silence.

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Adrian's smile slowly faded.

"They were waiting."

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

"Waiting for what?"

Adrian looked directly at him.

"For her eighteenth birthday."

Grace's face turned pale.

"I'm seventeen."

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

The room felt colder.

Victor whispered,

"Oh, no..."

Ross looked at him.

"What?"

Victor slowly answered.

"The trust."

Ethan frowned.

"What trust?"

Victor looked at Grace.

"When Richard Winters founded Hale-Winters Industries..."

"He created an irrevocable family trust."

Emily closed her eyes.

She understood before anyone else.

Victor continued.

"The trust doesn't become active until..."

He looked directly at Grace.

"...the founder's oldest living descendant turns eighteen."

Ethan's heart pounded.

"So Grace..."

Victor nodded.

"...inherits controlling ownership of the company."

Ross stared in disbelief.

"You're saying a seventeen-year-old girl is about to own one of the largest corporations in the country?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Fifty-one percent."

Grace looked horrified.

"I don't want it."

Adrian smiled.

"It doesn't matter."

"The law does."

Emily leaned toward the camera.

"Ethan..."

"You have to get to us."

Ross interrupted.

"Where are you?"

Emily glanced over her shoulder.

"I can't say."

"Why?"

"They're listening."

Suddenly, a warning alarm blared somewhere behind Emily.

She turned toward the sound.

Her expression changed.

"They're here."

The monitor shook violently.

The camera shifted.

Someone outside the control room was pounding on a heavy steel door.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Grace stepped backward.

Fear filled her eyes.

"Mom..."

Emily pulled her behind cover.

"It's okay."

"It'll hold."

Another impact.

Louder this time.

The hinges began to bend.

Ross shouted,

"Emily!"

"Tell us where you are!"

Emily looked back at the camera.

"If they break through..."

She paused.

"There isn't much time."

She reached into her pocket.

Pulled out a small silver flash drive.

"This contains everything."

"The Circle."

"The board."

"The offshore accounts."

"The murders."

"The missing children."

"Everything."

She held it tightly.

"They can never get this."

The door behind her buckled inward.

Metal screamed.

Someone on the other side shouted,

"Open the door!"

Grace grabbed Emily's arm.

"They're coming!"

Emily nodded.

"I know."

She looked back into the camera one last time.

Straight at Ethan.

"I love you."

"I never stopped."

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

"Emily!"

The steel door exploded inward.

Smoke filled the room.

Dark figures rushed inside.

The video feed filled with static.

One final image flashed across the monitor.

A masked operative reaching toward Grace.

Then—

The screen went black.

At the exact same moment, every light inside the underground facility went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

From somewhere deep inside the darkness...

A little girl's voice whispered only three words.

"They found us."
