Chapter 7: The Recording Richard Never Expected

Chapter 7: The Recording Richard Never Expected

For several long seconds, no one spoke.
The wind swept across the rooftop, tugging at my hair as the city lights shimmered below.
My father never took his eyes off the document in my hand.
Maya Solution.
Three words.
That was all it took to strip away decades of carefully crafted authority.
Finally, he laughed.
It sounded forced.
Almost desperate.
"You actually believe that?"
I didn't answer.
He pointed at Michael.
"He's manipulating you."
Michael remained perfectly still.
"I didn't write the email, Richard."
"You fabricated it."
"It's from your company server."
"You altered it."
"It's already been authenticated."
Dad looked back at me.
"Maya."
"You know me."
The irony was almost unbearable.
"I thought I did."
"I've sacrificed everything for this family."
I folded the email and slipped it back into the folder.
"No."
"You sacrificed this family for yourself."
His jaw tightened.
"You don't understand business."
"This wasn't business."
"It was survival."
"There were difficult decisions."
"Difficult?"
I took one step toward him.
"You stole my identity."
"You forged my signature."
"You planned to blame me for eighty-two million dollars."
His expression hardened.
"I never said I'd blame you."
Michael quietly replied,
"You wrote it."
Dad ignored him.
"I only needed someone the investigators would trust."
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Silence.
Even he realized what he had admitted.
His eyes widened slightly.
He quickly corrected himself.
"I mean—"
"It doesn't matter what you mean anymore," I said.
"You already answered."
For the first time all evening, fear flashed across his face.
Not fear of prison.
Fear of losing control.
The rooftop door opened again.
This time it wasn't hotel staff.
Two men and one woman walked onto the terrace.
Dark suits.
Professional posture.
Federal credentials hanging from leather wallets.
The woman spoke first.
"Richard Bennett?"
He turned sharply.
"Who are you?"
She held up her badge.
"Special Agent Karen Mills."
"Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"We'd like to speak with you."
Dad immediately smiled.
"Of course."
"I've been expecting someone."
Michael glanced at me but remained silent.
Richard straightened his tie.
"I'm happy to cooperate."
The second agent opened a folder.
"Before we begin..."
He looked directly at my father.
"Is your daughter Maya Bennett present?"
Every muscle in my body stiffened.
"I am."
The agent nodded politely.
"Ms. Bennett."
"You're not under investigation."
Relief washed through me so suddenly that I almost lost my balance.
"We've verified your employment records."
"Your tax filings."
"Your travel history."
"You were working in Illinois during nearly every transaction connected to this case."
Dad's face twitched.
The agents already knew.
His plan had failed.
The woman continued.
"However..."
"We believe your identity was used without your knowledge."
I nodded slowly.
"I believe so too."
Dad interrupted.
"That's ridiculous."
"Maya handled several consulting projects."
"No."
I answered before the agents could.
"I never worked for his companies."
Richard laughed again.
"You've forgotten."
"I have emails."
Michael quietly said,
"So do we."
Richard froze.
The male agent removed a small digital recorder from his pocket.
"We'd like to play something."
Dad frowned.
"What is that?"
"A recording obtained under warrant."
He pressed Play.
Static filled the rooftop.
Then...
My father's voice.
Crystal clear.
"If Maya refuses, forge it anyway."
My heartbeat stopped.
The recording continued.
"She lives two states away."
"She'll never know until it's too late."
Another voice answered.
It sounded older.
Nervous.
"What if investigators verify the signatures?"
Dad laughed.
Actually laughed.
"By then she'll already be defending herself."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
The only sound was the wind.
I stared at my father.
I had spent years wondering why I had never been enough.
Why every achievement had been ignored.
Why every success had been minimized.
The answer had never been about love.
It had been logistics.
Distance made me easier to frame.
Richard finally spoke.
"That recording is edited."
"No," Agent Mills replied.
"It's the original."
"You can't prove when it was made."
"We can."
She closed the recorder.
"It was recorded fourteen months ago."
Michael added quietly,
"The accountant who recorded it has already confessed."
Richard looked around wildly.
One agent.
Then another.
Then me.
Then the open rooftop door.
His breathing became faster.
For the first time in my life...
I watched my father run out of options.
He pointed at me.
"This is your fault."
I almost smiled.
"No."
"It's yours."
"You turned your back on your family."
"You turned me into evidence."
"I gave you everything!"
"You gave me someone else's debt."
His face twisted with anger.
"You ungrateful little—"
"Richard."
Agent Mills interrupted firmly.
"That's enough."
He ignored her.
He took another step toward me.
"Maya."
"Listen carefully."
"If I go down..."
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"...Olivia goes down too."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"Every document she signed..."
He smiled bitterly.
"...makes her part of this."
Michael immediately answered.
"Not true."
Richard snapped toward him.
"You don't know that."
"I know exactly that."
Michael opened another folder.
"Olivia signed venue contracts."
"Vendor approvals."
"Wedding invoices."
"None involve financial fraud."
Richard's smile disappeared.
His last bluff had failed.
Again.
Agent Mills took one step forward.
"Richard Bennett."
She reached into her jacket.
"We have a federal warrant for your arrest on charges including wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and obstruction of justice."
The words echoed across the rooftop.
Dad looked at me one last time.
Not with regret.
Not with sorrow.
With blame.
As though I had betrayed him.
Then, suddenly—
He turned and sprinted toward the opposite side of the rooftop.
"Richard!" one agent shouted.
He didn't stop.
He shoved past a row of patio chairs and headed straight toward the emergency stairwell.
The agents took off after him.
The rooftop exploded into motion.
Running footsteps.
Shouts.
The crash of metal furniture hitting the concrete.
Within seconds, everyone disappeared through the stairwell door except Michael and me.
I stared after them, barely able to breathe.
"Is he..."
I couldn't finish the question.
Michael looked toward the stairwell.
"He can run."
He paused.
"But he can't outrun bank records."
At that exact moment—
A scream echoed up from somewhere below.
Then another.
Then the unmistakable sound of dozens of people shouting all at once.
Michael's phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed immediately.
"What is it?" I asked.
He looked up slowly.
"That wasn't Richard."
"What do you mean?"
"The person who just tried to escape..."
May you like
He swallowed.
"...was Olivia."
