Chapter 13: The Video Elizabeth Never Wanted Me to Need

Chapter 13: The Video Elizabeth Never Wanted Me to Need

No one in the vault moved.
The FBI technician instinctively reached for the pause button.
Agent Mills stopped him.
"Let it play."
The image stabilized.
The quality was grainy, the colors faded with time, but Elizabeth Carter's face was unmistakable.
She looked directly into the camera.
Not frightened.
Not sick.
Calm.
Determined.
The little girl on her lap—me—was playing with a stuffed rabbit whose ears were nearly worn through.
Elizabeth kissed the top of my head before speaking again.
"Emma..."
"If you're seeing this, then Richard failed."
She smiled sadly.
"Or perhaps I failed."
My chest tightened.
"No," I whispered.
"You didn't."
Of course she couldn't hear me.
Twenty-three years separated us.
Yet somehow, it felt as though we were sharing the same room.
Elizabeth carefully lifted me off her lap.
"Go color for Mommy."
The little girl toddled out of frame.
Someone behind the camera chuckled softly.
A man's voice.
Warm.
Gentle.
"You've got five minutes before she comes back."
Elizabeth laughed.
"I know."
Then she looked straight into the lens again.
"Everything I'm about to say must remain hidden until Emma is old enough."
She reached beside her chair and picked up a thick manila folder.
Across the front were two words written in black marker.
PHOENIX FILES
Michael inhaled sharply.
"The USB folder."
Elizabeth nodded toward the camera as though responding.
"Project Phoenix isn't a company."
"It isn't an investment."
"It's a cover-up."
Agent Mills immediately began taking notes.
Elizabeth continued.
"For nearly three years I've investigated a network of executives, politicians, and financial institutions laundering billions of dollars."
The room fell silent.
Billions.
Not millions.
Billions.
"Richard Bennett isn't one of the founders."
Michael looked relieved.
"I knew it."
Elizabeth continued.
"He's an accountant."
"A talented one."
"He agreed to hide transactions."
She paused.
"Then he became greedy."
My heart sank.
Richard hadn't started the corruption.
He had simply decided to profit from it.
Elizabeth opened the folder.
Pages filled with photographs.
Bank records.
Company charts.
"I've copied everything."
She looked tired now.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"If anything happens to me..."
"The originals are hidden."
Michael leaned closer.
"Where?"
As though hearing him across time, Elizabeth smiled faintly.
"Only Jonathan knows where."
Again.
Jonathan Hale.
Everything led back to him.
Agent Mills interrupted the silence.
"Freeze the frame."
The technician paused the video.
She pointed toward the corner of the screen.
"Zoom in."
The image enlarged.
On the bookshelf behind Elizabeth sat a framed photograph.
Three adults.
One child.
Elizabeth.
A younger Richard Bennett.
A man whose face had been partially obscured by glare.
Michael's eyes widened.
"My God..."
"What?"
Agent Mills asked.
"I know that man."
"Who is he?"
Michael swallowed.
"Senator Thomas Whitmore."
The vault became eerily quiet.
Whitmore.
Daniel Whitmore's grandfather.
Edward Whitmore's father.
The family Olivia had just married into.
"That's impossible."
Daniel's voice echoed from the back of the room.
Everyone turned.
He had arrived only moments earlier with his father, Edward.
Neither had interrupted the video.
Until now.
Edward stepped forward slowly.
His face had gone completely pale.
"Show me."
The technician replayed the frame.
Edward closed his eyes.
"That's my father."
No one spoke.
Michael looked stunned.
"Did you know?"
Edward answered immediately.
"No."
"I was twelve when he died."
"He never discussed his business."
Agent Mills studied him carefully.
"We'll need to verify everything."
"I understand."
Edward didn't argue.
He simply kept staring at the frozen image.
As though seeing a stranger wearing his father's face.
The technician resumed the video.
Elizabeth continued speaking.
"Not everyone inside Phoenix is corrupt."
"Some were deceived."
She held up another photograph.
It showed Jonathan Hale shaking hands with several executives.
One face had been circled in red.
Richard Bennett.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing just behind Jonathan.
"He wasn't a victim."
Michael murmured.
"He was already inside."
Elizabeth sighed deeply.
"Jonathan doesn't know Richard has betrayed him."
That sentence changed everything.
Michael looked toward Agent Mills.
"So Jonathan wasn't working with Richard."
"He was being betrayed by him."
Agent Mills nodded slowly.
"At least according to Elizabeth."
Elizabeth looked off-camera.
The same warm male voice returned.
"You've got one minute."
She nodded.
Then looked into the lens one last time.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Emma..."
"If Richard raised you..."
She smiled sadly.
"Then he probably taught you that I abandoned you."
I couldn't breathe.
Because he had.
Not directly.
But through silence.
Through omission.
Through erased photographs.
Through hidden letters.
Elizabeth shook her head.
"I never left willingly."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Someone made that choice for me."
She looked over her shoulder.
As though checking whether someone was coming.
Then she whispered the final sentence.
"Don't trust anyone who tells you Jonathan Hale is dead."
The screen went black.
No one spoke for nearly a full minute.
Finally, the technician frowned.
"That's strange."
"What?"
Agent Mills asked.
"The file length."
"What about it?"
"It says twenty-eight minutes."
"We only watched twelve."
Michael looked sharply at the screen.
"What happened to the rest?"
The technician clicked forward.
Nothing.
Static.
Then, exactly sixteen minutes later...
The image suddenly returned.
Not to Elizabeth.
To a security camera.
The timestamp read:
October 18 — 11:42 p.m.
A warehouse.
Dark.
Rain pouring outside.
The picture shook violently.
Then a black sedan stopped beside the loading dock.
Three people stepped out.
The first...
Richard Bennett.
The second...
A woman in a dark coat.
The third...
The camera captured his face for only two seconds before the video abruptly ended.
But two seconds were enough.
Edward Whitmore staggered backward.
His face drained of all color.
"No..."
He whispered.
"That's not possible."
Daniel caught his father's arm.
"Dad?"
Edward pointed at the frozen screen with a trembling hand.
"I buried him."
He looked at Agent Mills.
"I attended his funeral."
May you like
Then he whispered the words that left every person in the vault frozen.
"...That's my father."
