Chapter 11: The Name That Changed the Investigation

Chapter 11: The Name That Changed the Investigation

The room fell into stunned silence.

One sentence echoed through my mind.

"...why her mother was really killed."

Killed.

Not died.

Not passed away.

Killed.

I looked at Agent Mills.

"The letter said she was dying."

"It did."

Michael Lawson's expression had turned grim.

"Richard just contradicted the letter."

My mother slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"Elizabeth was sick."

"Richard told me she had cancer."

Michael met her eyes.

"Did you ever see a medical record?"

She froze.

"No."

"Did you ever meet Elizabeth?"

"No."

"Did you attend a funeral?"

Again—

"No."

The color drained from her face.

"Oh, God..."

"I only believed what Richard told me."

Agent Mills folded Elizabeth's letter carefully.

"At this point, we shouldn't assume anything."

"Not until we verify it."

"But Richard clearly believes he has information we don't."

The officer shifted uneasily.

"There's something else."

Agent Mills looked at him.

"What?"

"He didn't ask for Maya Bennett."

"He specifically asked for Emma Carter."

The words sent a chill through the room.

Richard had never called me Emma.

Not once.

Not in twenty-three years.

"So he knows..."

I whispered.

"He always knew."

Michael nodded slowly.

"He never forgot."

"He simply made sure you did."

Agent Mills turned toward me.

"The decision is yours."

"You are under no obligation to meet with him."

Michael answered before I could.

"She shouldn't."

"He just attempted witness tampering an hour ago."

"I agree."

Agent Mills folded her arms.

"But if he genuinely wants to cooperate..."

"He'll talk to us."

"He doesn't need Maya."

The officer cleared his throat.

"He anticipated that."

Everyone looked at him.

"He said..."

The officer checked his notebook.

'If the FBI comes in without Emma, I'll ask for a lawyer and you'll never find the red file.'

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Red file?"

Agent Mills frowned.

"We didn't recover any red file."

The officer nodded.

"He says it's hidden somewhere only he knows."

"And what's inside?"

"He wouldn't say."

"He only laughed."

Michael stepped away and made a phone call.

Within minutes he returned.

"I asked the forensic team."

"And?"

"They searched Richard's office."

"No red file."

"They searched his home."

"Nothing."

"The storage units?"

"Nothing there either."

Agent Mills sighed.

"If the file exists..."

"...it's still missing."

I looked at Elizabeth's photograph.

"What if it's about my mother?"

Michael didn't answer.

Because he was thinking the same thing.

Daniel quietly approached me.

"You don't have to do this."

"I know."

"If you say no..."

"I'll support that."

I smiled faintly.

"You barely know me."

He shook his head.

"I know enough."

"I know what manipulation looks like."

He glanced across the ballroom toward Olivia.

"So does she."

Olivia slowly walked over.

She looked exhausted.

Her wedding dress was stained from kneeling on the rooftop stairs earlier.

Her mascara had long since surrendered to tears.

"I owe you an apology."

"You don't owe me anything tonight."

"I do."

She took a shaky breath.

"I spent years believing every awful thing Dad said about you."

"I never questioned it."

"I never asked why."

She looked down.

"I'm ashamed of that."

I studied her face.

For the first time in my life...

She wasn't my rival.

She was another victim.

"I forgive you."

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

She hugged me.

It felt strange.

Awkward.

But genuine.

Perhaps the first honest embrace we'd ever shared.

Agent Mills' phone rang.

She answered immediately.

After less than a minute, she looked toward Michael.

"They found something."

"What?"

"A hidden compartment."

"Where?"

"In Richard's car."

"What was inside?"

"A burner phone."

Michael's eyebrows lifted.

"Anything on it?"

"Thousands of deleted messages."

"The lab restored several."

Agent Mills looked at me.

"They weren't sent to investors."

"They weren't sent to accountants."

"They were sent to someone saved only as..."

She checked her screen.

"'J.H.'"

Michael didn't need another hint.

"Jonathan Hale."

Agent Mills nodded.

"We think so."

Michael began pacing.

"This changes everything."

"Why?"

"If Richard stayed in contact with Jonathan Hale..."

He stopped mid-sentence.

"No."

"That can't be right."

"What?"

"Hale disappeared twenty-five years ago."

"He couldn't have exchanged recent messages."

Agent Mills looked thoughtful.

"Unless..."

She didn't finish.

Instead she opened one restored message.

It was only eight words.

She's beginning to remember. What do I do?

A response followed less than two minutes later.

Nothing. She'll never find Elizabeth.

My heart nearly stopped.

Elizabeth.

Not was.

Not had been.

Present tense.

I grabbed Agent Mills' arm.

"When was that message sent?"

She looked at the timestamp.

Her eyes widened.

"...Three weeks ago."

No one spoke.

Three weeks.

Not twenty-five years.

Not years ago.

Three weeks.

Michael whispered,

"If that timestamp is authentic..."

He looked directly at me.

"...someone believes Elizabeth Carter is still alive."

Before anyone could process the revelation, another FBI agent rushed into the ballroom carrying a tablet.

"Agent Mills!"

She turned.

"What now?"

"We've identified the owner of storage box 317."

Everyone looked toward the small brass key lying inside the evidence bag.

Agent Mills asked quietly,

"Who owns it?"

The young agent swallowed.

"It isn't registered to Richard Bennett."

"It isn't registered to Elizabeth Carter."

"Then who?"

He turned the tablet so everyone could see.

Across the screen appeared a scanned signature card.

Owner: Emma Elizabeth Carter.

My breath caught.

"That's..."

The agent nodded.

"The account has been in your legal name since you were four years old."

Michael stared at the screen in disbelief.

"No one has accessed it in twenty-three years."

Then he looked at me.

"It means your mother didn't leave your future to Richard."

May you like

He paused.

"She left something directly to you."
