Chapter 14: The Funeral That Never Happened

Chapter 14: The Funeral That Never Happened

No one breathed.
The paused image remained frozen on the FBI monitor.
A grainy frame.
Three figures standing outside a rain-soaked warehouse.
Richard Bennett.
An unidentified woman.
And Senator Thomas Whitmore.
A man the entire country believed had died twenty-five years earlier.
Edward Whitmore slowly lowered himself into a chair.
His hands were shaking uncontrollably.
"I carried his coffin."
His voice was barely audible.
"I delivered his eulogy."
He looked at the screen again.
"I watched them lower him into the ground."
Daniel knelt beside his father.
"Dad..."
Edward's eyes never left the image.
"If that's my father..."
He swallowed.
"...then who did we bury?"
Agent Mills immediately took charge.
"No one leaves this room."
She turned to another agent.
"Get the original death certificate."
"The autopsy."
"Hospital records."
"Everything."
The agent hurried out.
Michael remained focused on the video.
"Run facial comparison."
The technician nodded.
Within seconds, specialized software began analyzing the grainy image.
The computer mapped facial landmarks.
Jawline.
Eye spacing.
Nose structure.
Cheekbones.
The progress bar slowly reached one hundred percent.
MATCH PROBABILITY: 98.7%
The room fell silent again.
The man in the warehouse...
Was almost certainly Thomas Whitmore.
Edward buried his face in his hands.
"My entire life..."
He whispered.
"...was a lie."
Daniel sat beside him.
"You didn't know."
"No."
Edward laughed bitterly.
"I built my company honoring a man who may never have died."
He looked toward Agent Mills.
"My father founded Whitmore Holdings."
"If he faked his death..."
"What happens to everything?"
The question hung in the air.
No one had an answer.
The technician frowned.
"There's metadata."
Michael looked over.
"What kind?"
"The security footage wasn't recorded twenty-five years ago."
"What?"
"It was copied."
He clicked through several file properties.
"The digital transfer happened..."
He paused.
"...eighteen months ago."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"So someone archived it recently."
Agent Mills nodded.
"Meaning someone still had access."
My phone buzzed.
Everyone instinctively looked toward me.
Unknown Number.
Again.
I hesitated.
Then opened the message.
He's watching you.
I felt a chill run down my spine.
Another message appeared before I could respond.
Don't tell the FBI about this phone.
I immediately handed the screen to Agent Mills.
"I'm done keeping secrets."
She read the message carefully.
Then another arrived.
Good. That means we chose correctly.
Michael frowned.
"'We'?"
Agent Mills signaled the forensic technician.
"Can we trace it?"
He already had equipment open.
"Working on it."
A few moments later, he looked confused.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"The message didn't come through a cellular network."
"It came through an encrypted relay."
"Can you locate it?"
He slowly looked up.
"I already did."
"Where?"
He turned the laptop toward everyone.
The GPS coordinates flashed across the screen.
Current Location: Lake Michigan Trust & Savings.
We all stared at one another.
Michael spoke first.
"That's this building."
Every agent in the vault reached for their radios.
Agent Mills remained calm.
"Lock down every entrance."
"Nobody enters."
"Nobody leaves."
Within seconds, voices crackled over the radios.
"Lobby secure."
"East exit secure."
"Loading dock secure."
The bank manager looked horrified.
"There shouldn't be anyone else down here."
Michael quietly replied,
"There is."
The forensic technician checked the signal again.
"It's moving."
Everyone looked at the screen.
The blinking dot slowly changed position.
Not upstairs.
Not outside.
It was moving...
Inside the vault level.
Someone was beneath us.
The bank manager frowned.
"That's impossible."
"There isn't another floor."
Michael looked directly at him.
"Are you sure?"
The manager hesitated.
Then his face changed.
"Oh..."
"What?"
"There used to be."
The room became perfectly still.
"What do you mean?"
"The original vault."
He pointed toward the concrete wall.
"When the bank expanded twenty years ago..."
"...they sealed the old underground storage level."
Agent Mills stared at him.
"Sealed?"
"Yes."
"No public access."
Michael slowly smiled.
"I think we just found where Richard hid the red file."
An engineering supervisor was called.
Ten minutes later, old blueprints arrived.
The manager spread them across a table.
"There."
He pointed to a faded section beneath the current vault.
"Sub-Basement B."
Agent Mills frowned.
"Why seal it?"
"Flood damage."
"Officially."
Michael immediately caught the wording.
"Officially?"
The manager looked uncomfortable.
"There were rumors."
"What rumors?"
He swallowed.
"That someone bought the entire lower level."
"But ownership records disappeared."
"Who bought it?"
"I don't know."
"The documents vanished."
The technician interrupted.
"The signal stopped moving."
"Where?"
He zoomed in.
The blinking dot rested directly beneath the blueprint's oldest storage corridor.
One room stood out.
Unlike every other vault.
It had a handwritten label.
Archive Room P.
Michael's breathing slowed.
"P."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He pointed toward the USB drive.
"Project Phoenix."
The room wasn't random.
Someone had named it deliberately.
Before anyone could speak, every light in the vault flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the emergency generators kicked in.
Half the room went dark.
The technician looked at his laptop.
"The signal disappeared."
Agent Mills grabbed her flashlight.
"What happened?"
The bank manager looked toward the ceiling.
"The power only fails if..."
He stopped.
"If what?"
"...someone manually shut down the lower electrical panel."
Silence.
Michael slowly reached into his briefcase and removed a compact flashlight.
"He isn't hiding anymore."
I frowned.
"Who?"
He looked directly at me.
"The person who's been texting you."
Just then...
From somewhere beneath the concrete floor...
Three slow knocks echoed upward.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Every agent froze.
May you like
Someone was alive beneath the sealed vault.
And they wanted us to know it.
