Chapter 9 – The Name on the Birth Certificate

Emma stared at the birth certificate as though the ink might rearrange itself into something that made sense.
It didn't.
The document looked authentic.
It carried the county seal, a registration number, and the signatures of hospital staff from more than thirty years ago.
But the father's name wasn't the man who had taught her to ride a bicycle.
It wasn't the man who had walked her down the aisle.
It wasn't the man Noah called Grandpa.
Her hands began to shake.
"This is fake."
Victoria Hale folded her arms.
"I assure you, it isn't."
Emma looked toward Ryan.
He was still pinned to the ground by the two men, his face bruised and bleeding.
"Ryan!"
His eyes met hers.
"Don't listen to anything she says!"
Victoria sighed impatiently.
"He's telling half the truth."
She stepped closer.
"The document is real."
Emma swallowed hard.
"Who... who is he?"
Victoria's expression remained unreadable.
"A man named Jonathan Ashford."
The name meant nothing to Emma.
She searched her memory.
Nothing.
"I've never heard of him."
"No," Victoria replied. "Because the people who raised you made sure you never would."
Emma shook her head.
"My parents never lied to me."
"They protected you."
Those three words echoed in Emma's mind.
Protected you.
Protected her from what?
Ryan suddenly struggled against the men holding him.
"Emma!"
He coughed, trying to catch his breath.
"Your parents didn't steal you!"
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"I never said they did."
Emma turned back toward her.
"Then what are you saying?"
Victoria looked almost sympathetic.
"Jonathan Ashford disappeared before you were born."
Emma frowned.
"Disappeared?"
"He was declared dead six months later."
"And my mother?"
"She changed your last name after marrying the man who raised you."
Emma's head spun.
"So the father I knew..."
"He chose to become your father."
Emma felt tears sting her eyes.
The man who had raised her suddenly seemed even more remarkable.
He had loved her without sharing her blood.
Yet one question remained.
"What does any of this have to do with Ryan?"
Victoria looked directly at her.
"Everything."
The sound of distant sirens interrupted the conversation.
One of Victoria's bodyguards looked toward the road.
"We need to leave."
Victoria didn't move.
She simply reached into the folder and removed another document.
This one was older.
Yellowed around the edges.
Across the top, bold letters read:
Ashford Family Trust
Emma frowned.
The estimated value listed on the first page made her gasp.
$214,000,000
Over two hundred million dollars.
"This is impossible."
Victoria nodded.
"Jonathan Ashford came from one of the wealthiest families in the state."
Emma stared silently.
"My mother never mentioned any of this."
"Because she believed every member of the Ashford family was dead."
Ryan shouted again.
"She's twisting everything!"
Victoria ignored him.
"Twenty-eight years ago, the Ashford family owned controlling shares in Harbor Ridge Development Group."
Emma's pulse quickened.
Harbor Ridge.
Again.
"Then what happened?"
"There was an internal war."
"Over money?"
"Over control."
Victoria's voice became colder.
"People disappeared."
Emma immediately thought of Michael Bennett.
Daniel Mercer.
Claire Bennett.
A pattern stretching back decades.
"You mean they were murdered."
Victoria didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Emma looked down at the trust documents.
"My father..."
She still couldn't believe she was saying those words.
"...Jonathan Ashford..."
Victoria nodded.
"...owned part of Harbor Ridge."
Emma's stomach tightened.
"And when he disappeared?"
"The ownership became... complicated."
Emma frowned.
"I don't understand."
Victoria smiled faintly.
"Because there was an heir."
Emma's heartbeat seemed to stop.
"No."
"Yes."
Emma slowly backed away.
"No..."
"The trust was designed so that Jonathan's only biological child would inherit his shares upon reaching adulthood."
Emma felt dizzy.
"My entire life..."
Victoria finished the sentence for her.
"...you've unknowingly owned a significant percentage of Harbor Ridge."
The parking lot became eerily silent.
Even the wind seemed to stop.
Emma whispered,
"That's impossible."
"It would have been impossible..."
Victoria agreed.
"...if everyone had known you were alive."
Ryan suddenly broke free from one of the guards long enough to shout.
"They forged everything!"
One guard tackled him again.
Victoria glanced toward him.
"No."
She looked back at Emma.
"They didn't forge your inheritance."
"They hid it."
Emma's mind raced.
If she really owned part of Harbor Ridge...
Why had no one contacted her?
Why wait until now?
Victoria answered before Emma could ask.
"Someone inside the Ashford family kept your identity secret."
Emma looked down at the birth certificate again.
"So why tell me now?"
Victoria hesitated for the first time.
Then she answered honestly.
"Because the trust expires in twelve days."
Emma looked up sharply.
"What?"
"When the deadline passes, ownership transfers permanently."
"To whom?"
Victoria's eyes never left hers.
"Either to you..."
She paused.
"...or to the people who've spent thirty years making sure no one could ever find you."
Emma's phone vibrated.
One new message from the anonymous number.
She's finally telling you enough truth to make you dangerous.
A second message appeared immediately.
But she's lying about one thing.
Emma's pulse raced.
What is she lying about?
The reply came seconds later.
Jonathan Ashford didn't disappear.
Emma held her breath.
May you like
The final message appeared.
He's still alive.
