Chapter 4 – The Stranger in the Black SUV

Emma stood frozen in the doorway long after Ryan's truck disappeared around the corner.
The neighborhood was quiet again.
Too quiet.
The black SUV that had frightened Ryan was nowhere in sight.
She slowly closed the door, locked every deadbolt, and checked the windows. Before tonight, she had never felt unsafe in her own home. Now every shadow outside seemed to carry a secret.
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number:
Don't panic. You're not the one they're watching. Ryan is.
Emma immediately typed back.
Who are they?
No answer.
She tried another question.
Are you outside my house?
Still nothing.
After several minutes, she gave up and placed the phone on the kitchen counter.
She poured herself a glass of water but couldn't bring herself to drink it. Her mind replayed Ryan's terrified expression over and over again.
That wasn't the face of a man worried about getting caught cheating.
It was the face of someone afraid of something much bigger.
Upstairs, Noah called softly.
"Mommy?"
Emma hurried to his room.
The little boy sat up in bed, rubbing his eyes.
"I had a bad dream."
Emma sat beside him and brushed his blond hair away from his forehead.
"What happened?"
"I dreamed Daddy was leaving."
Her heart broke.
Children always seemed to sense more than adults realized.
She smiled gently.
"You don't have to worry about tonight. I'm right here."
Noah wrapped his arms around her.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
She stayed beside him until he fell asleep again.
As she quietly closed his bedroom door, she made another promise—this one to herself.
Whatever was happening...
Whatever Ryan had gotten involved in...
She would never let it touch her son.
Back downstairs, Emma opened the PDF one more time.
This time she examined every page carefully instead of skimming.
Near the bottom of page eleven, she noticed something she had missed before.
One company name appeared repeatedly in the financial transfers.
Harbor Ridge Development Group.
Emma frowned.
She had never heard Ryan mention it.
Curious, she searched through old emails.
Nothing.
Then she searched Ryan's forwarded tax documents.
Still nothing.
Finally, she searched their family calendar.
One result appeared.
Dinner – Harbor Ridge
Eight months earlier.
Emma stared at the screen.
That evening...
Ryan had told her it was a networking dinner with potential investors.
She had stayed home with Noah while Lily came over to keep them company.
Emma suddenly remembered something odd.
Lily had left unexpectedly after only twenty minutes, saying she wasn't feeling well.
Emma had thought nothing of it.
Now she wondered...
Had Lily actually gone to that dinner?
Another notification interrupted her thoughts.
This one wasn't from the mysterious sender.
It was from her home security system.
Motion detected – Front Porch.
Emma's pulse quickened.
She opened the live camera feed.
An elderly man stood on her porch.
Late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark overcoat despite the warm evening.
He wasn't knocking.
He simply stood there looking directly into the camera.
Then, very deliberately, he placed a large manila envelope beneath the welcome mat.
He looked into the camera one last time.
Almost as if he knew she was watching.
Then he walked away.
No vehicle.
No rush.
He simply disappeared into the darkness.
Emma waited until the camera showed the street was empty before opening the door.
The envelope felt heavy.
Inside was a single folder.
On top rested a business card.
Daniel Mercer
Licensed Private Investigator
No phone number.
No address.
Just his name.
Beneath the card was a handwritten note.
Emma,
I've been trying to reach you for three months. Ryan intercepted every warning I sent.
Her breathing caught.
She kept reading.
You don't know me. But I worked for someone who hired me to investigate financial fraud involving your husband. What I discovered became far bigger than anyone expected.
Emma turned the page.
There were photographs.
Bank records.
Copies of property deeds.
Surveillance reports.
Then she saw one photograph that made her knees weaken.
It showed Ryan entering the same townhouse she had seen earlier.
Lily wasn't with him.
Another woman was.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Elegant.
She looked to be in her early forties.
The timestamp was from only two weeks ago.
Emma frowned.
Who was she?
The answer came on the next page.
Victoria Hale
Chief Financial Officer
Harbor Ridge Development Group
Emma had never heard the name before.
Yet according to the report, Victoria had transferred more than $1.8 million through shell companies connected to Ryan over the last year.
Emma whispered to herself.
"This isn't just an affair..."
It was something else.
Something criminal.
She flipped to the final page.
Only one sentence had been typed across the center.
Your husband wasn't stealing from only you.
Before Emma could process those words, her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Not the same one from before.
She hesitated.
Then answered.
A woman's voice spoke in a hurried whisper.
"Emma?"
"Yes."
"You don't know me."
"No."
"You need to listen carefully."
Emma gripped the phone tighter.
"Who is this?"
The woman ignored the question.
"They know Daniel contacted you."
Emma's heart stopped.
"What?"
"If you still have the envelope..."
The woman took a shaky breath.
"...don't let anyone else find it."
The line suddenly filled with static.
Then Emma heard a loud crash.
A scream.
The unmistakable sound of tires screeching.
The call ended.
One second later, another message appeared on Emma's phone.
May you like
This time it came from the original anonymous number.
Daniel Mercer is dead. You're next if they discover what he gave you.
