Chapter 3 – The Paper Trail

Emma's fingers tightened around the tablet as she opened the next page of the document.
At first glance, it looked like an ordinary financial report—pages of account numbers, property records, investment statements, and legal language that seemed impossible to understand.
But one sentence near the top of page seven caught her attention.
Estimated marital assets subject to concealment: $612,480.
Emma blinked.
That number couldn't be right.
She and Ryan had never had anywhere close to six hundred thousand dollars in cash.
She kept reading.
The report listed everything they owned together: their house, retirement accounts, investment portfolios, life insurance policies, Ryan's consulting income, and several assets she had never heard of before.
One by one, the pieces began falling into place.
Ryan had opened three limited liability companies over the past two years.
Emma had never questioned it.
"He was building the business," she had proudly told friends.
According to the report, those companies barely existed.
They generated almost no revenue.
Instead, they were used to move money from one account to another until it became nearly impossible to trace.
The document highlighted dozens of transfers.
Five thousand dollars here.
Twelve thousand there.
Twenty thousand into an investment account.
Fifteen thousand into another.
Small enough that Emma never noticed.
Large enough to slowly empty their future.
She reached the final page of the report.
Another handwritten note waited for her.
This started eighteen months ago.
Eighteen months.
Emma leaned back in her chair.
Eighteen months ago...
Noah had been hospitalized with pneumonia.
Ryan had promised to handle everything while Emma stayed at the hospital.
Bills.
Insurance.
Mortgage payments.
Investments.
She had trusted him completely.
While she sat beside their sick son's bed, Ryan had quietly begun moving their money.
The realization made her physically ill.
Her phone buzzed.
Another message from the unknown number.
You're reading it now, aren't you?
Emma hesitated before replying.
Who are you?
This time the answer came almost instantly.
Someone who couldn't stay silent anymore.
Emma typed again.
How do you know all this?
No response.
Instead, another document appeared.
A photo.
It showed Ryan walking into a downtown office building.
His arm was around Lily.
The timestamp was from nine months earlier.
Another photo.
Ryan and Lily leaving a beachfront hotel.
Six months earlier.
Another.
The two of them touring a newly built townhouse with a real estate agent.
Emma froze.
She recognized the address.
It was only fifteen minutes from their own neighborhood.
The date on the photo was almost five months ago.
Her stomach twisted.
They weren't just having an affair.
They had been shopping for a home together.
Emma set the phone down, trying to steady her breathing.
She suddenly remembered something Ryan had said months ago.
"We should wait another year before buying a bigger house."
At the time, she thought he was being financially responsible.
Now she understood.
He had already chosen another future.
One that didn't include her.
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Emma looked toward the front door.
Another knock.
Then Ryan's voice.
"Emma... I know you're inside."
Silence.
"I just want to talk."
She didn't move.
"I'm not leaving until you answer."
Emma stood slowly and walked toward the front window.
Ryan stood on the porch, still wearing the same jeans from earlier. He had thrown on a sweatshirt, but his face looked exhausted.
For the first time since she had known him, he looked afraid.
He knocked again.
"Please."
Emma unlocked the door but left the security chain in place.
The opening was only a few inches wide.
Ryan exhaled with relief.
"Thank God."
"Why are you here?"
"I made a terrible mistake."
Emma almost laughed.
"A mistake?"
"It happened... and then everything got out of control."
She stared at him.
"How long?"
Ryan lowered his eyes.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
He remained silent.
Emma answered her own question.
"Eighteen months?"
Ryan's head snapped up.
"Who told you that?"
His reaction confirmed everything.
Emma's voice became frighteningly calm.
"So it's true."
Ryan's face turned pale.
"You've been looking through my files."
"I've been looking through our files."
He opened his mouth but couldn't speak.
Emma continued.
"You stole our savings."
"I can explain."
"You bought property."
"It's not what—"
"You opened accounts with Lily."
Ryan's expression completely changed.
The fear disappeared.
In its place came something else.
Calculation.
He realized someone had given Emma information he never intended her to have.
"Who have you been talking to?" he asked quietly.
Emma ignored the question.
Instead, she said something that made him visibly flinch.
"I know about the townhouse."
For the first time that evening, Ryan looked genuinely shaken.
He took one slow step backward.
"You... shouldn't know about that."
Emma watched every expression cross his face.
Confusion.
Panic.
Then anger.
Not because she had caught him cheating.
Because someone else had betrayed him.
Ryan looked over his shoulder toward the dark street as if expecting someone to be watching.
Then he leaned closer to the partially opened door.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"Emma... if someone contacted you..."
He swallowed hard.
"...don't trust them."
Emma frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Ryan glanced nervously toward the road again.
Before he could answer, headlights swept across the front yard.
A black SUV rolled slowly past the house.
Ryan's face lost all color.
He took another step backward.
"They found me."
Without another word, he turned, ran to his truck, and sped away.
Emma stood frozen in the doorway, watching the black SUV continue down the street before disappearing around the corner.
A second later, her phone vibrated once more.
May you like
The unknown sender had only four words for her.
"They're watching him too."
