Chapter 5 – The Safe Deposit Box

Emma stared at the message until her phone slipped from her trembling hands.
Daniel Mercer is dead. You're next if they discover what he gave you.
Her first instinct was to call 911.
Her second was to grab the envelope and burn it.
Instead, she forced herself to breathe.
If Daniel had truly risked his life to get those documents into her hands, destroying them would only erase the truth he had died trying to protect.
She quickly locked the front door again and closed every curtain in the house.
The folder lay open across the kitchen table.
For the first time that night, Emma looked at it not as evidence of Ryan's betrayal, but as evidence of something much larger.
Someone had been watching Ryan.
Someone had hired Daniel.
And now Daniel was gone.
Her phone vibrated again.
It wasn't a text.
It was an email.
The sender's address was encrypted and meaningless, just a random string of letters and numbers.
The subject line read:
For Emma Only
Inside was a single sentence.
Open the last pocket inside the envelope.
Emma frowned.
She emptied the contents of the manila envelope onto the table.
Photographs.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Nothing else.
Then she examined the envelope itself.
Running her fingers along the inside, she felt an unusually thick section near the bottom seam.
She carefully peeled it apart.
A tiny flash drive dropped onto the table.
Alongside it was a folded piece of paper no larger than a business card.
It contained only three handwritten lines.
Safe Deposit Box 214
First Community Bank
Key is already waiting.
Emma stared at the note.
Daniel had planned this.
He had expected that someone might stop him before he could tell her everything.
She plugged the flash drive into her laptop.
A password screen appeared.
No hint.
No instructions.
Just eight empty boxes waiting for a code.
She tried Noah's birthday.
Nothing.
Her wedding anniversary.
Incorrect.
Lily's birthday.
Access denied.
The drive locked itself for thirty minutes.
Emma leaned back in frustration.
Whatever was on the drive was important enough to protect.
She would have to come back to it later.
The next morning, Emma barely slept.
By seven o'clock, Noah was eating cereal at the kitchen island as though nothing had changed.
Children had an incredible ability to keep moving forward.
"Are we going to Grandma's today?" he asked.
Emma smiled gently.
"Maybe later this week."
He nodded happily and continued eating.
Emma looked at him and silently promised herself that he would never become another victim of Ryan's choices.
After dropping Noah off at preschool, Emma drove to First Community Bank.
The building was quiet.
Ordinary.
Nothing about it suggested secrets.
Inside, a middle-aged bank manager greeted her with a polite smile.
"Good morning. How can I help you?"
Emma hesitated.
"I... I believe someone left something for me."
The manager's expression changed almost imperceptibly.
"Your name?"
"Emma Carter."
He typed for several seconds before looking back up.
"I've been instructed to give you this."
He reached beneath the counter and placed a small brass key inside a sealed envelope.
"No identification required?" Emma asked.
The manager shook his head.
"The instructions were very specific."
"Who left it?"
"I'm sorry."
His smile faded.
"I can't answer that."
Emma followed him into the secure vault.
Rows upon rows of steel boxes lined the walls.
He stopped in front of Box 214.
After inserting his master key, he stepped back.
"The rest is private."
Emma inserted the brass key.
The lock clicked.
Inside sat a single black file case.
Nothing more.
She carried it into one of the private viewing rooms before opening it.
Inside were several neatly labeled folders.
One was marked:
Financial Records
Another:
Property Transfers
A third:
Insurance Policies
Then she noticed the final folder.
Unlike the others, it had been sealed with red tape.
Across the front, Daniel had written one sentence in black marker.
Open only after you know who Claire Bennett is.
Emma frowned.
Claire Bennett.
The name meant nothing to her.
She searched every page in the other folders.
Nothing.
No explanation.
No photograph.
Just the name.
Before she could continue, her phone rang.
This time, it wasn't Ryan.
It was Detective Sarah Collins from the county police department.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes."
"I'm calling regarding Mr. Daniel Mercer."
Emma's pulse quickened.
"What about him?"
"I'm afraid he was involved in a fatal traffic accident last night."
Emma closed her eyes.
So it was true.
"We've reviewed security footage," the detective continued.
"There appears to have been another vehicle involved."
"Was it an accident?"
A long silence followed.
Finally, Detective Collins answered carefully.
"We're not prepared to say."
Emma looked down at Daniel's folders.
Someone had wanted him silenced.
"I'm also calling because your name was found in his appointment calendar."
"My name?"
"Yes."
"It appears he intended to meet with you yesterday evening."
Emma swallowed.
"I never met him."
"I understand."
The detective paused.
"If Mr. Mercer left you anything..."
Emma's heart skipped.
"...it may be important to our investigation."
Emma looked at the sealed file case on the table.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Should she tell the truth?
Could she trust the police?
Before she answered, another call appeared on her screen.
Unknown number.
The same mysterious caller.
Emma ignored it.
A voicemail arrived instantly.
She played it after ending the conversation with the detective.
The distorted voice spoke only one sentence.
"Do not give the police Daniel's files. Someone inside the department is working with Ryan."
Emma's blood ran cold.
May you like
Then the voicemail ended with six words she couldn't stop replaying.
"Start by finding Claire Bennett."
