Chapter 16 - Paxton's Choice

At 7:18 a.m., Dr. Lena Morris entered the archive beneath Hangar One carrying a laptop and a paper chart.

She was in her late forties, direct, calm, and visibly unimpressed by family wealth.

Dana hugged her.

Paxton sat upright at the conference table.

Nicole stood beside him.

Claire, Samuel, Arthur, and Evelyn watched from the opposite side.

Graham remained upstairs coordinating security.

Dr. Morris looked around the secret archive.

"This is unusual."

Paxton smiled weakly.

"You should see Christmas."

"I prefer hospitals."

"So do I now."

She began the examination without further conversation.

She tested Paxton's orientation, memory, speech, motor strength, and decision-making.

She asked him to explain the consequences of suspending the Halcyon transaction.

Paxton answered slowly but clearly.

"The sale stops."

"The company may face short-term financing pressure."

"But we have evidence the debt used to justify the sale is fraudulent or misrepresented."

"That requires independent review before any control transaction proceeds."

Dr. Morris looked at Nicole.

"Does he normally talk like a board memo?"

Nicole nodded.

"Unfortunately."

Paxton looked offended.

Dr. Morris almost smiled.

Then she asked him to identify the current president, the date, and where he was.

Paxton answered all three.

When she asked why he was in an aircraft hangar archive instead of a hospital, he looked at Nicole.

"Long story."

"Good insight,"

Dr. Morris said dryly.

She completed the exam at 7:46.

Then she opened the paper chart.

"I evaluated Mr. Mercer three days ago in the emergency department."

Evelyn looked at her.

"I was told the assessment was inconclusive."

Dr. Morris raised an eyebrow.

"By whom?"

Evelyn looked toward the empty chair where Reeves would have sat.

"Dr. Reeves."

Morris nodded once.

"It wasn't."

Nicole felt the room sharpen.

"What did you find?"

"Paxton was medically impaired but showed intermittent purposeful responses."

"His imaging showed no catastrophic neurological injury."

"I recommended hospital observation and toxicology review."

Dana looked at Evelyn.

"Instead he was transferred home."

Morris nodded.

"Against my recommendation."

Evelyn's face tightened.

"I signed the transfer because Nathan said the hospital environment was destabilizing him."

Morris gave her a long look.

"That is not what I documented."

Nicole glanced at Paxton.

He looked angry but not surprised.

Dr. Morris continued.

"Based on today's evaluation, Mr. Mercer is capable of understanding and communicating complex decisions."

Samuel leaned forward.

"Would you sign an independent capacity certification?"

"Yes."

Arthur checked the time.

7:49.

"Please do."

Morris signed the document.

Samuel notarized it.

Arthur scanned it to his secure system.

Nicole watched the upload bar move.

Thirty percent.

Sixty.

One hundred.

Arthur pressed submit.

"Filed with the trust administrator and corporate secretary."

Paxton exhaled.

Nicole squeezed his hand.

Arthur's phone rang less than a minute later.

He answered.

"Vale."

He listened.

His expression changed.

"Understood."

He ended the call.

"Corporate secretary acknowledges Paxton's restored capacity."

Claire smiled.

"Option void?"

Arthur shook his head.

"Not yet."

Nicole's relief vanished.

"Why?"

"Hale filed a competing notice at 7:31 claiming the option became unconditional when Evelyn signed it."

Evelyn stared.

"That is not what the agreement says."

Arthur nodded.

"Correct."

"But he has forced a dispute."

"We need the board to recognize Paxton as chair before nine."

Paxton leaned back.

"Call the meeting now."

Arthur looked at him.

"Emergency notice requires one hour."

"Then eight-fifty."

Nicole checked the time.

Exactly one minute to spare.

Samuel frowned.

"Too close."

Paxton looked at Nicole.

"Trust protector can waive notice for emergency preservation actions."

Samuel stared at him.

"How do you know that?"

Paxton smiled faintly.

"I did read some of Dad's paperwork."

Nicole looked at Samuel.

"Can I?"

Samuel checked the codicil.

"Yes."

"Waive it."

Arthur immediately began sending notices.

Emergency board meeting.

8:15 a.m.

Mercer Holdings headquarters.

Hybrid attendance permitted.

Purpose: restoration of executive authority and suspension of disputed asset option.

Nicole looked at Paxton.

"Can you make it downtown?"

Dana answered for him.

"He shouldn't."

Paxton looked at her.

"But can I?"

Dana crossed her arms.

"You can sit in a car and then sit in a conference room."

"That's most executive leadership."

Arthur pretended not to hear.

Nicole leaned toward Paxton.

"If you get dizzy, we're done."

"Agreed."

"If Morris says stop, we stop."

"Agreed."

"If you lie to me about how you feel—"

"I sleep on the couch forever."

Nicole stared.

"You are learning."

The group began packing documents.

Evelyn remained seated.

Nicole noticed.

"Are you coming?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Do you want me there?"

Nicole considered the question.

"Yes."

Paxton looked surprised.

Nicole continued.

"Not because I forgive you."

Evelyn's face closed.

"Because the board needs to hear exactly what you signed and why."

"You want me to humiliate myself."

"I want you to tell the truth."

Evelyn looked toward her son.

Paxton did not rescue her from the decision.

After several seconds, she stood.

"Fine."

They left the archive at 8:01.

The morning had become bright and clear.

Nicole rode in the back of a black SUV beside Paxton.

Dana sat across from them.

Claire rode in another car with Evelyn.

Arthur and Samuel had already left for headquarters.

Paxton watched the highway through the tinted window.

"There's something I haven't told you."

Nicole closed her eyes.

"Of course there is."

"It's about the flash drive."

"We found the backup."

"Not that."

Nicole looked at him.

Paxton's face was serious.

"The drive had an audio file from the night Dad died."

Nicole went still.

"You had a recording?"

"A partial one."

"How long have you had it?"

"Two months."

Dana looked out the window, suddenly interested in anything else.

Nicole stared at her husband.

"Two months."

"I was trying to authenticate it."

"What was on it?"

Paxton looked down at his hands.

"Dad and Mom arguing."

"About Halcyon?"

"About Reeves."

Nicole waited.

Paxton took a breath.

"Dad told her Reeves was stealing from the company."

"Mom accused Dad of trying to control her."

"Then Reeves entered the room."

"And?"

Paxton's jaw tightened.

"The recording ends after Dad says, 'Get him out of my house.'"

Nicole studied him.

"Why didn't you tell Claire?"

"Because I didn't know what it proved."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Paxton looked at her.

"Because I knew what you would do."

Nicole's anger rose.

"Tell the truth?"

"Go after them before I had enough evidence to protect you."

"You keep calling secrecy protection."

"I know."

"And you keep making the same mistake."

Paxton looked out the window.

"I know that too."

Nicole sat back.

The city skyline appeared ahead.

"Anything else?"

Paxton hesitated.

Nicole laughed without humor.

"That was not a difficult question."

"The recording also has a fourth voice."

"Whose?"

"Arthur's."

Nicole stared.

"Arthur was there the night Charles died."

"Yes."

"Dana told me he arrived before the ambulance."

"He was already in the house."

Nicole felt another layer peel away.

"What does he say?"

Paxton's voice became quiet.

"He tells my father not to sign something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

"The file cuts out."

Nicole looked toward headquarters growing larger through the windshield.

"And the original flash drive is missing."

"Yes."

"Which means Reeves may have that recording."

"Yes."

Dana's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"Nicole."

She held out the phone.

"It's Arthur."

Nicole took it.

"What's wrong?"

Arthur's voice was tense.

"The board meeting moved."

"What do you mean moved?"

"Hale convened his own emergency session for eight-ten."

Nicole checked the dashboard clock.

8:09.

"Can he do that?"

"Not lawfully."

"But he's doing it."

"Yes."

Nicole looked at Paxton.

Arthur continued.

"And Evelyn is already in the room."

Nicole stared toward the second SUV ahead of them.

It was no longer there.

Claire's car had taken the previous exit.

"What?"

Arthur's voice lowered.

"Evelyn switched cars five minutes ago."

Nicole's stomach dropped.

"Where is Claire?"

"I don't know."

Paxton looked at Nicole.

She ended the call and dialed Claire.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A text arrived instead.

From Claire.
