Chapter 12 - A Mother's Offer

Nobody moved.
Evelyn's voice echoed faintly through the steel door above them.
"You can come upstairs or I can have the door opened."
Paxton remained seated, one hand wrapped around Nicole's.
Claire stood near the filing cabinets with her jaw clenched.
Samuel closed the marriage packet and placed it inside his red briefcase.
Dana gathered the capacity document and medical ledgers.
Nicole whispered.
"How did she find us?"
Graham was not with them.
Arthur had been left at Hangar Three.
Only Claire, Dana, Samuel, Maya, and their small group knew about the veterinary hospital.
Paxton looked toward Samuel.
"The red briefcase."
Samuel frowned.
"What?"
"Is it tagged?"
Samuel's face changed.
He turned the briefcase over.
A small tracking tile was attached beneath the leather edge.
Claire stared.
"You didn't know?"
Samuel removed it.
"This case has been in a bank vault for five years."
Nicole looked at him.
"Who accessed the vault?"
Samuel's expression hardened.
"My assistant retrieved it this afternoon."
Paxton leaned back.
"Then Evelyn has someone inside your office."
Samuel crushed the tracking tile under his shoe.
"Apparently."
The steel door above them shook once.
Someone was working on the lock.
Claire moved toward the tunnel entrance.
"We leave the way we came."
Samuel shook his head.
"They may have covered the western exit."
Nicole looked around the archive.
"Another way out?"
Paxton thought.
"There was a freight lift."
Claire pointed toward the far wall.
"That?"
A narrow metal door blended into the cabinets.
Paxton nodded.
"It goes to the old parts warehouse."
Nicole helped him stand.
The stairwell lock clicked above.
They had seconds.
Samuel and Dana carried the essential files.
Claire opened the freight lift.
The interior was barely large enough for four people.
"Two trips."
Nicole shook her head.
"No."
Evelyn's shoes sounded on the stairs.
Paxton looked at Nicole.
"Go."
"No hero decisions."
"This is physics, not heroism."
Claire grabbed Nicole's arm.
"Take Samuel and the documents."
"I'm not leaving him."
Paxton looked toward the stairwell.
"Then Claire and Dana go first."
Dana stepped into the lift with Samuel and the files.
Claire remained.
"I'm staying."
Samuel pressed the button.
The lift rose with a mechanical groan.
The archive door opened.
Evelyn entered with Dr. Reeves and two security officers.
She saw Paxton standing.
For the first time since Nicole had known her, Evelyn Mercer lost control of her expression.
Shock crossed her face.
Then relief.
Then something colder.
"You're awake."
Paxton leaned against the conference table.
"Disappointing?"
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
"Don't be childish."
"I learned from experts."
Reeves stepped forward.
"Paxton, you need to sit down."
Nicole moved between them.
"You don't touch him."
Reeves looked at her.
"He is under my medical supervision."
"Not anymore."
"You don't have authority to make that decision."
"We found your capacity form."
Reeves went still.
Nicole watched his face carefully.
"Three weeks early."
Evelyn looked at Reeves.
A tiny moment of genuine confusion appeared.
Nicole caught it.
So did Paxton.
"What form?"
Evelyn asked.
Reeves answered too quickly.
"Routine contingency paperwork."
Paxton laughed softly.
"Signed three weeks before I collapsed?"
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"Nathan?"
Reeves remained composed.
"Charles's archive contains drafts."
"That document is not necessarily operative."
Nicole stared at Evelyn.
"You didn't know about it."
Evelyn's face hardened toward Nicole.
"Do not mistake a question for ignorance."
But Nicole knew.
There were secrets between Evelyn and Reeves too.
Claire stepped beside her brother.
"Mom, call off the vote."
Evelyn looked at her daughter as if seeing a ghost.
"You were supposed to be in London."
"I changed plans."
"Clearly."
Claire held up Charles's ledger binder.
"We found the Reeves notes."
This time Evelyn's expression truly changed.
Her gaze went to Nathan Reeves.
"What exactly did you find?"
Reeves interrupted.
"This is not the place for financial misunderstandings."
Paxton looked at his mother.
"He signed my incapacity before I was sick."
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
"You were under enormous stress."
"I was running the company."
"Poorly."
Paxton flinched.
Nicole felt his hand tighten around hers.
Evelyn continued.
"You blocked restructuring."
"You rejected liquidity measures."
"You endangered thousands of employees because you wanted to prove you were smarter than every adviser in the room."
Paxton stared at her.
"So you decided I was incompetent?"
"I decided you were emotionally compromised."
Nicole felt the insult land between them.
"By me?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"Among other things."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"There she is."
"Stay out of this."
"I have stayed out of this for four years."
Claire stepped forward.
"It didn't improve you."
The freight lift returned with a metallic sound.
Evelyn glanced toward it.
Nicole saw the calculation in her eyes.
She knew someone had already removed documents.
"Who was here?"
No one answered.
Evelyn looked at Reeves.
"Search the room."
Paxton moved between Reeves and the cabinets.
"No."
Reeves nodded to one of the guards.
Nicole stepped forward.
"If any of you touch those files, Samuel Price will file an emergency injunction before sunrise."
Evelyn's eyes snapped toward her.
"Samuel Price is retired."
Nicole smiled faintly.
"He should update his LinkedIn."
Claire almost laughed.
Evelyn stared at Nicole for several seconds.
Then she looked toward the freight lift.
"He was here."
Nicole said nothing.
Evelyn's shoulders lowered slightly.
Her tone changed.
"Nicole, I want to speak with you alone."
Paxton shook his head.
"No."
Evelyn ignored him.
"Five minutes."
Nicole looked at Paxton.
"I'm not afraid of a conversation."
Paxton's expression said he was.
Nicole touched his arm.
"Stay where I can see you."
She walked with Evelyn toward the far side of the archive.
They stopped near shelves of old aviation contracts.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"You have no idea what you're interfering with."
"Everyone says that right before refusing to explain it."
"Then I'll explain it."
Nicole waited.
Evelyn looked toward Paxton.
"Mercer Holdings has a hidden debt exposure of nearly eight hundred million dollars."
Nicole stared at her.
"To whom?"
"Several lenders."
"Why hidden?"
"Because Charles guaranteed development projects privately during the expansion years."
Nicole remembered the recording.
Charles believed someone had lied to Evelyn about the debt.
"Do you have proof?"
"Yes."
"Show me."
"I will."
Evelyn's tone became urgent.
"Halcyon agreed to absorb the exposure as part of the acquisition."
"If the deal fails tomorrow, the guarantees may be called."
"Assets will freeze."
"Payroll lines could collapse."
"People will lose jobs."
Nicole studied her.
For the first time, Evelyn sounded less like a villain and more like a frightened executive.
That made her more dangerous, not less.
"Why didn't Paxton know?"
"Because he would have challenged the debt in court."
"Maybe he should."
"And if he loses?"
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Do you want to be responsible for fifteen thousand families discovering that your principles don't pay their mortgages?"
Nicole felt the weight of the question.
Then she remembered the false chart.
The bottle placed beside Paxton's bed.
Her initials written beside entries she never made.
"Did you plan to blame me for Paxton's condition?"
Evelyn's face went still.
"No."
"Arthur brought me a statement."
"Arthur acts independently when he thinks he's protecting the company."
"The notebook had my initials."
"I didn't write them."
Nicole stared.
"You brought the notebook into the room."
Evelyn's expression flickered.
"Nathan gave it to me."
Nicole looked toward Reeves.
He was speaking quietly with one of the guards.
"Did you know it contained future medical entries?"
Evelyn said nothing.
That was answer enough.
"You knew something was wrong."
"I knew Nathan believed Paxton's condition might deteriorate."
"That's not the same thing."
Evelyn's voice hardened.
"I did what I believed would keep the company alive."
Nicole felt disgust and pity collide.
"Including letting people build a case against me?"
Evelyn looked away for half a second.
"I thought you would leave."
Nicole stared.
"You wanted to scare me out of the house."
"I wanted you away from the board conflict."
"By making me think I might be blamed if Paxton died?"
Evelyn did not answer.
Nicole shook her head.
"That is not protection."
"No."
Evelyn's voice became quieter.
"It was desperation."
Nicole looked toward Paxton.
He was watching them.
"Call off the vote."
Evelyn's face closed again.
"I can't."
"Won't."
"Can't."
Nicole studied her.
"Why?"
Evelyn looked toward Reeves.
Then back at Nicole.
"Because if the board doesn't approve the transaction by noon, someone releases the debt guarantees publicly."
Nicole frowned.
"Who?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with anger.
"I don't know."
Nicole stared at her.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Believe whatever you want."
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"But ask yourself why Nathan wants Paxton declared incapable instead of simply persuading the board."
Nicole looked toward Reeves again.
Evelyn continued.
"He isn't protecting my deal."
"He's protecting something inside it."
Before Nicole could answer, Dana's voice sounded from the freight lift doorway.
"Nicole."
Dana had returned with Samuel.
She held a sheet of paper in one hand.
Her face was pale.
"We authenticated the marriage packet."
Nicole felt a rush of relief.
Then she saw Dana's expression.
"What else?"
Dana looked at Evelyn.
"We found the source of the eight-hundred-million-dollar debt."
Evelyn's face changed.
Dana held up the document.
"It isn't Charles's debt."
The archive went silent.
"Whose is it?"
Nicole asked.
May you like
Dana looked toward Dr. Reeves.
"It belongs to Halcyon."
