Chapter 14 - Nine O'Clock

The emergency meeting began at 1:23 a.m. in the archive beneath Hangar One.

By then, exhaustion had become another participant at the table.

Everyone was making decisions with bodies that wanted sleep and minds that had been running on fear for hours.

Nicole recognized the danger.

Tired people loved simple answers.

That was how Reeves had built the original trap.

Urgency narrowed choices.

Nicole asked Samuel to write every available option on a whiteboard before anyone voted on a plan.

He looked surprised.

Then impressed.

Option one was to allow the asset option to proceed and challenge it later.

Arthur called that legally conservative and financially disastrous.

Option two was to seek immediate court intervention.

Samuel called that strong but too slow.

Option three was to restore Paxton's capacity, activate the trust, and challenge Reeves's conflict before the option deadline.

That was risky but possible.

Option four was to publicly disclose the entire dispute before markets opened.

Everyone hated that.

Nicole left it on the board anyway.

"Why?"

Evelyn asked.

"Because pretending an ugly option doesn't exist is how people manipulate us."

No one argued.

Claire added a fifth option.

"Call Hale directly and tell him we know."

Arthur shook his head.

"He will destroy evidence."

"Maybe he already has."

"Then he will accelerate the option."

Paxton looked at the board.

"What does Reeves want most?"

Nicole answered.

"Control of the aviation division."

Arthur nodded.

"And freedom from scrutiny over the debt structure."

Claire added,

"And Mom dependent on his interpretation of everything."

Evelyn looked at the whiteboard.

For the first time that night, she seemed to see the crisis as a system rather than a series of emergencies.

"He has been controlling the menu."

Nicole looked at her.

"What?"

"Every choice I thought I had came through him."

Evelyn pointed at the board.

"Sell to Halcyon or face debt collapse."

"Trust Reeves or risk Paxton's health."

"Remove Nicole or lose the vote."

Her voice became bitter.

"He never gave me a choice where I could verify the premise."

Nicole nodded.

"Then that's our rule."

Everyone looked at her.

"No decision based on a premise we can't independently verify."

Samuel wrote the sentence across the top of the whiteboard.

Arthur smiled faintly.

"That would eliminate half of corporate law."

Nicole looked at him.

"Start adapting."

The room almost laughed.

The humor lasted only a second.

But it helped.

For the first time, the group was not merely reacting to Reeves.

They were building a method he had not designed.

No one called it a family meeting because nothing about it felt like family.

Nicole sat at the head of the conference table because Samuel insisted the trust protector needed a clear decision position.

Paxton sat beside her wrapped in a gray maintenance jacket someone found upstairs.

Claire occupied the opposite chair.

Evelyn sat alone on one side of the table.

Arthur and Samuel opened legal files.

Dana reviewed Paxton's vital signs every few minutes.

Graham stood near the stairwell.

Dr. Reeves had been escorted to a waiting room above after Evelyn refused to let him leave with any Mercer documents.

They could not legally hold him.

They could legally control access to a private airfield while security issues were investigated.

It was a thin distinction.

Arthur began.

"The asset option gives Halcyon the right to acquire Mercer Aviation for a fixed price if the transaction is not withdrawn before nine."

Nicole looked at Evelyn.

"Can you withdraw it?"

"I signed as acting executive chair."

"That wasn't my question."

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"The option says withdrawal requires approval of the same officer who executed it and the medical adviser who certified the emergency."

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

Reeves.

Claire laughed in disbelief.

"You gave your doctor veto power over an aviation sale?"

Evelyn snapped.

"I was told the structure was required by the lenders."

Arthur looked at the document.

"No legitimate lender would require this."

"I know that now."

Paxton stared at his mother.

"Did you read it?"

Evelyn turned toward him.

"Of course I read it."

"Did you understand it?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you sign?"

Evelyn's composure finally cracked.

"Because I was told the company had forty-eight hours before a liquidity event!"

The words echoed through the underground room.

She lowered her voice again.

"Because I believed the business your grandfather built could collapse while you lay unconscious upstairs."

"Because every adviser I trusted said the same thing."

Paxton stared at her.

"Except Arthur."

Evelyn looked away.

"Arthur had been opposing every restructuring option for months."

Arthur answered quietly.

"Because they all led to Halcyon."

Nicole looked at the option agreement.

"Who is the named buyer?"

Arthur turned to the signature page.

"Halcyon Aviation Recovery LLC."

Samuel frowned.

"I don't know that entity."

"Neither do I."

Arthur looked toward Graham.

"Can you search internal vendor records?"

Graham opened his laptop.

"Offline here."

"We need a network."

Claire pointed upward.

"Hangar office has one."

Samuel shook his head.

"Assume it's monitored."

Nicole thought of Paxton's hidden old phone and Charles's offline archive.

"Can we use public corporate records?"

Arthur nodded.

"From a clean device."

Claire took out a prepaid phone.

Everyone looked at her.

"London habit."

Nicole raised an eyebrow.

"Art finance habit?"

Claire smiled faintly.

"Family habit."

Arthur searched the entity.

The registration had been filed two months earlier in Delaware.

The managing member was another LLC.

That LLC traced to a holding company in Nevada.

The holding company manager was a trust company.

Samuel leaned closer.

"Keep going."

Arthur followed the chain.

At the end was a familiar name.

Reeves Strategic Partners.

The room went silent.

Paxton whispered.

"He isn't helping Halcyon buy us."

Nicole understood.

"He's buying the aviation division himself."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"Using Halcyon financing and a shell vehicle."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

Claire looked at her mother.

"You signed it."

Evelyn looked devastated.

"I thought Halcyon was the buyer."

Nicole felt no satisfaction.

Evelyn had done terrible things to protect the deal.

But she had also been deceived.

Both could be true.

Arthur scrolled through the registration.

"There may be a way to invalidate the option."

Nicole looked at him.

"What?"

"Conflict disclosure."

"The option requires Reeves to certify that he has no financial interest in the buyer."

Claire smiled coldly.

"And he does."

"Yes."

"Then void it."

Arthur shook his head.

"We need admissible proof of beneficial ownership before nine."

"A public filing isn't enough?"

"The chain is too indirect."

Samuel tapped the table.

"Charles's archive may have something."

They searched financial cabinets for the next hour.

At 2:46 a.m., Claire found a series of emails printed by Charles six years earlier.

The oldest involved Reeves discussing aviation assets with Halcyon executives.

But six-year-old interest did not prove current ownership.

At 3:12 a.m., Dana found a payment ledger showing Reeves Advisory receiving a large "success fee" from Halcyon.

Useful.

Not decisive.

At 3:40 a.m., Graham received a secure call from one of his trusted staff at the mansion.

He listened, then looked at Paxton.

"The hospital bed is still there."

Paxton straightened.

Nicole knew what he was thinking.

The flash drive.

"Can they retrieve it?"

Graham shook his head.

"Evelyn's staff sealed the medical room after Paxton was moved."

Evelyn looked at him.

"My staff?"

"Your house manager."

"I never ordered that."

Nicole looked at Evelyn.

"Who did?"

Graham checked the message.

"Dr. Reeves."

Paxton leaned toward Nicole.

"The drive has current transactions."

"You said you rebuilt the deleted records."

"And more."

"How much more?"

Paxton hesitated.

"Enough that Reeves tried to stop me from presenting it to the board."

Nicole stared at him.

"You knew Reeves was involved before you collapsed?"

"I suspected."

"You keep upgrading what you knew."

Paxton looked ashamed.

"I didn't want to accuse him without proof."

Nicole stood.

"I'm going back to the mansion."

Dana immediately shook her head.

"No."

"The drive is there."

"So are Reeves's people."

Evelyn rose.

"I'll go."

Everyone looked at her.

Nicole almost laughed.

"Why would I trust you with it?"

Evelyn's face tightened.

"Because it is my house."

Paxton spoke quietly.

"It's ours."

Evelyn looked at him.

Something painful crossed her face.

"Fine."

She turned to Nicole.

"Then we go together."

Claire stood.

"I'm coming."

Paxton tried to rise.

Dana pushed him back into the chair.

"You are not."

"That's my evidence."

"And this is your bloodstream."

Dana pointed at him.

"Choose which one you want to keep stable."

Paxton reluctantly sat.

Nicole looked at Samuel.

"What happens if we're not back?"

"I file the trust activation and emergency suspension at eight."

"Arthur?"

"I prepare the conflict challenge."

Nicole looked at Paxton.

"You stay with Dana."

"I hate this plan."

"Good."

She kissed him quickly.

"Now you know how I've felt all night."

Nicole, Claire, Evelyn, and Graham left the airfield at 4:11 a.m.

Dawn was still hours away.

The drive back to the mansion was silent until Claire spoke.

"Mom, did you know about the notebook entries?"

Evelyn looked out the window.

"I knew Nathan wanted a written record of who administered medication."

"Did you know he used Nicole's initials?"

Evelyn said nothing.

Claire leaned forward.

"Mom."

"I saw them after he wrote them."

Nicole felt her jaw tighten.

"And you left them."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at Nicole.

"Because by then I believed Paxton might not recover before the vote."

"And you needed someone to blame."

"I needed confusion."

Nicole stared at her.

"That is worse than you think it sounds."

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

"I know."

Claire looked at her mother as though she had aged ten years overnight.

"You let them build a case against Nicole to distract from the sale."

"I thought the notebook would frighten her into leaving the estate."

"She could have been ruined."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I know."

Nicole turned toward the window.

She did not want Evelyn's remorse yet.

Remorse without accountability was another kind of manipulation.

They reached the estate at 4:49 a.m.

The front gates opened for Evelyn's car.

Inside, the mansion looked exactly as Nicole had left it.

Too exactly.

The hospital bed remained in the living room.

The IV pole stood beside it.

The prescription bottle was gone.

So was the black notebook.

Paxton had hidden the flash drive inside the lower bed rail near the footboard.

Nicole knelt and felt beneath the frame.

Nothing.

Her heart dropped.

"It's gone."

Graham checked the opposite rail.

"Are you sure this is where he put it?"

"Yes."

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

"Who entered this room after he left?"

The house manager appeared.

"Dr. Reeves returned once."

Nicole turned.

"When?"

"Around eleven-thirty."

"Before the airfield?"

"Yes."

"Did he take anything?"

The manager hesitated.

"He carried a black medical case."

Claire swore.

Nicole looked at Evelyn.

"He has the drive."

Graham's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"Say that again."

He ended the call and looked at them.

"Reeves is no longer at the airfield."

Evelyn stared.

"How?"

"One of the contractors drove him out through the fuel service gate."

Nicole checked the clock.

5:02 a.m.

Less than four hours remained.

Claire looked toward the open double doors.

"Where would he go?"

Nicole stared at the empty driveway.

Then she remembered the final line Reeves had spoken in the archive.

Halcyon doesn't need the trust anymore.

"To the buyer."

Evelyn looked at her.

"Halcyon's city office."

Graham shook his head.

"Closed overnight."

Nicole's eyes moved toward the sky beyond the estate.

The airplane that had passed low when Paxton woke.

The family flight manifest.

The old airfield.

The aviation division.

"Not the office."

She turned to Evelyn.

"Where does Halcyon keep its aircraft?"

Evelyn answered slowly.

"Mercer Aviation leases them a private terminal."

Nicole's pulse quickened.

"Where?"

"Executive Field."

Claire checked the time.

"Twenty-five minutes away."

May you like

Nicole looked at Graham.

"Drive."
