PART 1: The Laugh at the Top of the Stairs

PART 1: The Laugh at the Top of the Stairs

Jason kicked Sarah so hard that the baby clothes flew into the air.

Tiny socks.

White onesies.

A yellow blanket she had carefully folded the night before.

They drifted through the air above the staircase like pieces of the future she had been trying so hard to protect.

Sarah was seven months pregnant. One hand gripped the wooden railing while the other held a box filled with baby clothes she had just been told to "get out of the house."

Her brother stood behind her.

Jason's lips twisted into a look of contempt.

"Move, you pathetic burden."

Then his foot slammed into the lower right side of her back.

His hand shoved her shoulder.

Sarah's grip slipped from the railing.

The box flew from her arms.

Her body crashed into the first step...

Then the next...

And the next.

The house echoed with the horrifying sound of her tumbling down the staircase.

At the top of the stairs, her father laughed.

Not in shock.

Not in disbelief.

He laughed.

As if watching his pregnant daughter fall was the punchline to a joke.

Sarah hit the hardwood floor with a sickening thud.

Pain shot through her body.

She curled around her stomach, trembling, one hand pressed against the floor.

"My baby..." she whispered. "Daniel..."

The front door burst open.

Daniel rushed inside.

His eyes immediately found Sarah lying on the floor.

The baby clothes scattered everywhere.

Jason standing halfway down the stairs.

Sarah's father still smiling from the hallway above.

The expression on Daniel's face changed so quickly that even Jason instinctively stepped back.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside his wife.

"Sarah... Sarah, look at me."

She tried.

Her eyes were filled with tears, unfocused and terrified.

"My baby..." she whispered again.

Daniel gently slipped one hand beneath her head and rested the other protectively over her stomach.

"Don't move," he said softly. "I've got you."

Then Sarah's father spoke from the top of the stairs.

"She's fine. Stop the drama."

Daniel froze.

Slowly, he lifted his head.

Near the bottom step, Sarah's phone lay face-up on the floor.

Its screen was still glowing.

Recording.

The timer was still running.

From the tiny speaker came the unmistakable sound of her father's laughter.

Daniel reached down and picked up the phone.

Jason's smile disappeared.

Sarah's father's laughter stopped.

Daniel rose to his feet, positioning himself between Sarah and the staircase.

His jaw tightened.

His eyes locked on Jason.

"You kicked my pregnant wife."

Jason took an involuntary step backward.

Daniel raised the phone.

The recording was still capturing every second.

"This is all on video."

For the first time in his life, Sarah's father looked genuinely afraid.

Because Daniel hadn't just witnessed what happened.

He had the evidence.
