CHAPTER 8 — THE ENEMY BEHIND THE SHADOWS

The name echoed in Isabella’s mind long after the call ended.
Victor Hale.
She had heard thousands of names throughout her career.
Investors.
Competitors.
Executives.
Powerful people who believed money could control everything.
But this name was different.
Because of one detail.
Hale.
The same last name as Vanessa.
Isabella stood in her office, staring out at the city lights.
Her father noticed the change in her expression.
“Who was on the phone?”
“Evelyn.”
Alexander frowned.
“That woman?”
Isabella nodded.
“She warned me about someone.”
“Who?”
She looked at him.
“Victor Hale.”
For a moment, her father said nothing.
Then his expression changed.
A reaction Isabella had rarely seen.
Concern.
“You know that name?”
Alexander slowly walked toward the desk.
“Yes.”
The seriousness in his voice made Isabella pay attention.
“Who is he?”
Her father looked at the documents scattered across the table.
“Someone who doesn’t fight openly.”
“Someone who waits.”
A pause.
“Someone who destroys people before they even realize they are under attack.”
Meanwhile…
At an expensive penthouse overlooking the city, Vanessa Hale stood in front of the window.
She had spent the entire day watching the news.
Every channel.
Every report.
Every mention of Isabella Montrose.
The woman she once considered beneath her.
Now the woman everyone admired.
Vanessa gripped her glass tightly.
“She took everything.”
A voice behind her answered.
“No.”
She turned.
A man stood near the doorway.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold.
Victor Hale.
Her father.
“You took everything from yourself.”
Vanessa looked away.
“You said Damian would choose me.”
Victor walked closer.
“I said Damian was predictable.”
“And he was.”
“Until Isabella changed the game.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“She humiliated me.”
Victor smiled slightly.
“No.”
“She revealed you.”
The words hurt because they were true.
At Montrose Headquarters, Isabella met with her security and legal team.
“Tell me everything about Victor Hale.”
The head investigator opened a file.
“Victor Hale is a private investor.”
“That’s the public version.”
Isabella looked at him.
He nodded.
“The reality is different.”
A screen displayed Victor’s history.
Acquisitions.
Failed companies.
Bankruptcies.
Destroyed partnerships.
“He doesn’t buy companies to grow them.”
“What does he do?”
“He buys weaknesses.”
A pause.
“Then he uses them.”
Isabella studied the information.
“And his connection to Vanessa?”
The investigator hesitated.
“She’s his daughter.”
Isabella leaned back.
That explained the confidence.
The ambition.
The obsession with status.
Vanessa wasn’t simply a mistress trying to replace a wife.
She came from a family that had spent decades manipulating powerful people.
The investigator continued.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Victor invested heavily in Cross Global before your marriage.”
Isabella looked up.
“Why?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
Later that evening, Damian arrived at Montrose Headquarters again.
This time, Isabella almost didn’t recognize him.
The arrogance was gone.
The expensive confidence.
The belief that everyone owed him respect.
He looked tired.
Human.
“I heard about Victor Hale.”
Isabella looked at him.
“You knew about him?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“But I know Vanessa.”
A pause.
“Or at least I thought I did.”
Isabella didn’t respond.
Damian looked around the office.
“Everything makes sense now.”
“What does?”
“She wasn’t interested in me.”
Isabella raised an eyebrow.
“She wanted my position.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“She wanted access.”
The realization was painful.
“She knew I was vulnerable.”
“She knew I wanted admiration.”
“And she gave me exactly what I wanted.”
Isabella looked at him.
“And you gave her exactly what she wanted.”
Damian nodded.
“Yes.”
That night, a major financial alert appeared.
UNKNOWN INVESTORS ATTEMPT HOSTILE ACQUISITION OF CROSS GLOBAL HOLDINGS
The board immediately contacted Isabella.
“They’re moving faster than expected.”
She looked at the documents.
“Who?”
The answer appeared on the screen.
HALE STRATEGIC PARTNERS.
Damian saw the name.
His face changed.
“Vanessa’s family.”
Isabella nodded.
“They weren’t trying to destroy us.”
“They were trying to inherit us.”
A few hours later, Isabella received another message.
No name.
No number.
Only one sentence.
You took my daughter’s future. Now I will take yours.
She stared at the screen.
Then deleted the message.
Her father watched her.
“Are you afraid?”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
“Angry?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
She looked at the city outside.
Determination filled her eyes.
“Focused.”
The next morning, Victor Hale appeared on every major business network.
He smiled confidently.
“Cross Global Holdings has lost direction.”
“The market needs new leadership.”
The reporters asked:
“Are you referring to Isabella Montrose?”
Victor smiled.
“I’m referring to someone who has spent years pretending to be powerful.”
Across the city, Isabella watched the interview.
She understood the message.
It wasn’t just business.
It was personal.
Victor Hale wanted her to react emotionally.
But he didn’t know Isabella.
She had survived four years inside a family that tried to break her.
A billionaire’s attack was nothing compared to that.
That afternoon, Isabella called an emergency meeting.
The executives entered the room.
Everyone looked concerned.
She stood at the head of the table.
“Victor Hale believes he knows our weakness.”
She placed the documents down.
“He believes we will panic.”
A pause.
“He believes we will fight like everyone else.”
She looked around the room.
“But we are not everyone else.”
The room became silent.
“Prepare the counterattack.”
The executives nodded.
Across town, Victor Hale received the update.
“Montrose has responded.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
His assistant looked confused.
“You expected that?”
Victor looked out the window.
“Yes.”
“Because Isabella Montrose is dangerous.”
A pause.
“But everyone has a weakness.”
He smiled.
“And I know hers.”
The war had officially begun.
And this time…
May you like
It wasn’t about money.
It was about control.
