CHAPTER 6 — THE APOLOGY THAT CAME TOO LATE

The rain fell heavily over the city that evening.

From the window of his office, Damian Cross watched thousands of people moving below.

Everyone had somewhere to go.

Everyone had a purpose.

Everyone had a life continuing forward.

Except him.

For the first time in years, Damian felt invisible.

The feeling was unfamiliar.

He had spent most of his adult life believing he was impossible to ignore.

His name opened doors.

His family history commanded respect.

His wealth created opportunities.

But now…

The world had discovered something he never wanted to admit.

The name Cross was not what made him powerful.

The person standing quietly beside him for four years had been.

Isabella.

He looked down at the document sitting on his desk.

The handwritten note from his father.

Protect Isabella Montrose at all costs.

He read it again.

And again.

Each time, the words felt heavier.

His father had known.

Everyone with real power had known.

Except him.

Because Damian had been too arrogant to look deeper.

The next morning, Damian arrived at Montrose Global Headquarters.

This time, he didn’t walk in like a CEO.

He didn’t demand attention.

He didn’t expect anyone to move aside.

He simply walked to the reception desk.

“I’m here to see Isabella.”

The receptionist looked at him.

“Do you have an appointment?”

Damian almost responded the way he used to.

Do you know who I am?

But he stopped himself.

“No.”

The receptionist checked the schedule.

“I’m sorry. Ms. Montrose has a full day.”

Damian nodded.

“I understand.”

The receptionist looked surprised.

Because the old Damian Cross would never have accepted that answer.

“I’ll wait.”

He sat down in the lobby.

And waited.

One hour.

Two hours.

Three hours.

Employees passed by.

Some recognized him.

Some whispered.

Some remembered the headlines.

But Damian stayed silent.

For the first time, he experienced what Isabella had experienced for years.

Being ignored.

Being underestimated.

Being treated like he didn’t matter.

And somehow…

That hurt.

Inside her office, Isabella watched through the glass wall.

Her assistant stood nearby.

“You know he’s been waiting for three hours.”

“I know.”

“Are you going to see him?”

Isabella remained silent.

The assistant hesitated.

“May I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still love him?”

The question stayed in the air.

Isabella looked away.

“I loved the man I thought he was.”

A pause.

“But that man disappeared a long time ago.”

Finally, near the end of the day, Isabella entered the lobby.

Damian immediately stood.

For a second, they simply looked at each other.

The woman he lost.

The man who destroyed what they had.

“Isabella.”

Her expression remained calm.

“You waited.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Damian struggled.

Because for the first time, he didn’t have a prepared answer.

“I wanted to apologize.”

She said nothing.

“I know an apology doesn’t fix what I did.”

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“It doesn’t.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

The acceptance surprised her.

Damian looked down.

“I was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“I humiliated you.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt you.”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Every answer was painful.

But he deserved every one.

“I thought I was protecting my family.”

Isabella looked at him.

“No.”

“You were protecting your pride.”

Damian closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

She was right.

They entered a private meeting room.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, Damian said:

“I never knew who you were.”

Isabella looked at him.

“That was because you never cared enough to ask.”

The words were simple.

But devastating.

“I thought you needed me.”

“I never needed your money.”

“I know.”

“I never needed your name.”

“I know.”

“Then what did I need?”

Damian looked at her.

And for the first time, he answered honestly.

“You needed someone who valued you.”

Silence.

Because that was the one thing he failed to give.

Damian placed a small box on the table.

Isabella looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Your wedding ring.”

She didn’t touch it.

“I removed it the night you left.”

“Why?”

He looked at the box.

“Because I realized something.”

“What?”

“I spent four years thinking I gave you a place in my world.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“But you were the reason my world existed.”

Isabella looked away.

For a moment, she remembered their early years.

The man who made her laugh.

The man who held her hand before ambition changed him.

But memories were not enough.

Not anymore.

Before Damian could say anything else, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then stood.

“What?”

Isabella noticed.

“What is it?”

Damian looked at her.

“The investigation.”

“What investigation?”

“The financial audit.”

His face turned pale.

“They found something.”

“What?”

He swallowed.

“Someone inside Cross Global was transferring money illegally.”

Isabella watched him carefully.

“Who?”

Damian looked at the phone.

Then back at her.

“The transfers were approved using my mother’s authorization.”

Silence.

The truth they had been searching for had finally appeared.

Evelyn Cross wasn’t just arrogant.

She wasn’t just cruel.

She had been hiding something.

Something big.

Damian whispered:

“My mother betrayed me.”

Isabella stood slowly.

“No.”

She looked toward the window.

“She betrayed everyone.”

That night, a sealed report arrived at Montrose Global Headquarters.

The title immediately caught Isabella’s attention.

CROSS FAMILY PRIVATE FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES — CONFIDENTIAL REVIEW

She opened the file.

The first page contained one sentence.

The Cross family fortune may have been built on years of concealed financial manipulation.

Isabella continued reading.

And with every page…

The truth became darker.

Because the downfall of Damian Cross was not the end of the story.

May you like

It was only the beginning.
