CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN THEY NEVER KNEW

The city lights blurred through the tinted window of the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
For the first time in four years, Isabella Montrose allowed herself to feel the weight of everything she had endured.
The insults.
The humiliation.
The endless nights standing beside a man who never saw her as his equal.
Damian Cross had always believed he was the center of the universe.
He believed his last name was powerful.
He believed his family’s mansion represented generations of success.
He believed the Cross empire existed because of blood, inheritance, and privilege.
But he never knew the truth.
The Cross fortune was never built by the Cross family alone.
It was protected.
Expanded.
And saved repeatedly by the Montrose family.
Her family.
Isabella looked down at her phone.
Thirty-seven missed calls.
Twenty-three messages.
All from the same people who had watched her leave.
Damian.
Evelyn.
Vanessa.
She almost laughed.
Almost.
Only hours ago, they had stood together and watched her walk out of the mansion like she was nothing.
Now they were suddenly desperate to reach her.
Funny how quickly power changed people.
“Ms. Montrose,” the driver said carefully, “we are approaching headquarters.”
Isabella looked through the window.
The massive glass tower rose above the city skyline.
The Montrose Global Headquarters.
A building that represented everything Damian never understood.
Discipline.
Strategy.
Legacy.
Not appearances.
Not arrogance.
Not empty titles.
The moment the car stopped, security personnel immediately opened the doors.
“Welcome home, Ms. Montrose.”
She stepped out.
The employees standing in the lobby immediately straightened.
Some looked surprised.
Others looked relieved.
They knew.
They had been waiting.
At the center of the lobby stood a tall man in his sixties wearing a dark navy suit.
Her father.
Alexander Montrose.
The moment he saw his daughter’s face, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Pain.
Because he knew.
A father always knew when his child had been hurt.
“Isabella,” he said quietly.
She walked toward him.
For a moment, the powerful businesswoman disappeared.
She was simply a daughter coming home.
“I should have listened to you,” she whispered.
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“You believed in love. There is nothing shameful about that.”
“But I allowed them to disrespect you.”
His eyes hardened.
“That ends tonight.”
Isabella entered the private conference room.
Waiting inside were twelve lawyers, financial advisors, and executives.
On the massive screen behind them was one name:
CROSS GLOBAL HOLDINGS.
The room became silent.
Her father sat at the head of the table.
“Four years ago, Damian Cross convinced everyone that he was the reason the company survived.”
A lawyer clicked the remote.
Financial records appeared.
“However, every major investment agreement, debt restructuring, and acquisition was approved through Montrose Capital.”
Another document appeared.
“Your private trust funded the emergency bailout that saved Cross Industries.”
Another.
“Your negotiations secured their largest international contracts.”
Another.
“Your signature protected them from bankruptcy.”
Isabella stared at the screen.
Seeing everything displayed made the reality impossible to ignore.
She had spent four years hiding her identity.
Four years letting Damian believe he was the hero of a story she wrote.
Her father looked at her.
“Are you ready to take back what belongs to you?”
Isabella looked toward the city outside.
Then she remembered Damian’s voice.
Kneel.
She remembered Vanessa’s smile.
She remembered Evelyn’s accusation.
Her expression became calm.
Cold.
“No.”
Everyone looked surprised.
“No?” her father repeated.
Isabella stood.
“I don’t want revenge.”
A pause.
“I want justice.”
She walked toward the screen displaying Damian’s company.
“Execute Phase One completely.”
The lawyers nodded.
“Account restrictions?”
“Yes.”
“Board notifications?”
“Yes.”
“Ownership disclosure?”
She looked at the documents.
“Not yet.”
Her father studied her carefully.
“What are you planning?”
For the first time that night…
Isabella smiled.
A quiet, controlled smile.
“I want them to wake up tomorrow believing they still have everything.”
“Then I want them to watch it disappear.”
Meanwhile…
Inside the Cross mansion…
Damian was still laughing.
He sat beside Vanessa in the grand dining room, surrounded by guests who pretended nothing unusual had happened.
“She actually thinks she has power,” he said.
Vanessa smiled.
“She always had a dramatic imagination.”
Evelyn lifted her wine glass.
“To finally getting rid of a mistake.”
Everyone laughed.
Then Damian’s phone rang.
He ignored it.
A second time.
Then a third.
Finally, he answered.
“What?”
The voice on the other end sounded nervous.
“Mr. Cross…”
“What is it?”
“We have a problem.”
Damian rolled his eyes.
“Unless the house is burning down, I don’t care.”
A long pause.
Then the executive spoke.
“The bank has frozen several company accounts.”
The smile disappeared from Damian’s face.
“What?”
“And the board is requesting an emergency meeting.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because someone has activated the Montrose contingency agreement.”
Damian froze.
The room became silent.
Vanessa noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Damian slowly stood.
“Montrose…”
He whispered the name like it meant nothing.
Then suddenly…
Everything changed.
Because there was only one Montrose family powerful enough to do this.
And only one person connected to them.
His wife.
Isabella.

For the first time in four years…
Damian Cross felt afraid.
