Chapter 5: A New Beginning

Chapter 5: A New Beginning

One year later...

Spring arrived in Chicago.

Sophie's scar had faded into a thin silver line hidden beneath her hair.

She still remembered that night.

But she no longer feared it.

She had learned something stronger than fear.

She had learned what justice looked like.

Our parents tried calling dozens of times.

Letters.

Emails.

Birthday cards.

I never answered.

Some bridges aren't burned by anger.

They're destroyed by betrayal.

One Saturday morning, Sophie and I walked through Lincoln Park.

She squeezed my hand.

"Mom?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Do you think bad people always get caught?"

I smiled.

"Not always."

"But sooner or later..."

"The truth usually finds a way."

She nodded thoughtfully.

Then smiled.

"I like the truth."

"So do I."

We kept walking beneath the warm spring sunlight.

Leaving behind the lies.

The blood.

The courtroom.

The people who chose cruelty over family.

Because family isn't defined by the name you inherit.

It's defined by the people who stand beside you when the world turns against you.

May you like

And from that day forward...

Sophie and I never looked back.
