Chapter 2: The Video No One Could Escape

Chapter 2: The Video No One Could Escape

An hour later...

Inside the Whitmore Hotel security office...

The atmosphere felt colder than any courtroom.

Two detectives.

Three patrol officers.

Hotel security.

The wedding planner.

And Preston.

Our parents insisted on staying.

"So we can clear this up."

I almost laughed.

The monitor flickered to life.

Timestamp:

7:42:18 PM

The reception hall appeared.

Crystal clear.

Camera One.

Our family table.

Sophie sitting beside me.

Swinging her little white shoes.

Exactly as I'd remembered.

She never left her chair.

The detective paused.

"Is that your daughter?"

"Yes."

Playback continued.

Camera Two.

The head table.

Preston laughing with guests.

Then...

He quietly picked up his titanium iPhone.

Looked around.

Slipped away from the bridal party.

No one noticed.

Except the camera.

He walked directly behind our table.

Stopped beside Sophie's little denim jacket hanging over her chair.

Reached inside the pocket.

Placed something there.

His phone.

The detective froze the frame.

Zoomed in.

There it was.

His own hand.

His own phone.

Inside an eight-year-old girl's pocket.

Nobody spoke.

Not one word.

My mother slowly covered her mouth.

"No..."

My father whispered,

"That's impossible."

Daniel changed to Camera Three.

A better angle.

Even closer.

There was no doubt.

No trick.

No obstruction.

Preston planted the phone himself.

The detective turned slowly.

"Mr. Walker..."

"Would you like to explain this?"

Preston's face had turned ghost white.

"I..."

"I..."

"It looks different—"

The detective cut him off.

"No."

"It looks exactly like what you did."

Then came Camera Four.

The assault.

Every second.

Preston ripping the heavy oak menu board from its stand.

Lifting it over his shoulder.

Swinging.

The board smashing into Sophie's head.

Blood.

Screams.

No self-defense.

No accident.

Just violence.

The detective stopped the recording.

Looked directly at Preston.

"You intentionally framed a child."

"And then assaulted her."

"I've seen grown criminals show more restraint."

The room fell silent.

Only one sound remained.

May you like

The click...

...of handcuffs.
