Chapter 3: The Family Finally Breaks

"You can't arrest him!"

My mother practically screamed.

"He's the groom!"

One detective didn't even blink.

"He's also the suspect."

She stepped in front of Preston.

"It was a mistake."

"He was emotional."

"He worked so hard for this wedding."

The detective answered calmly.

"So did the little girl whose skull he fractured."

That ended the argument.

My father finally looked at me.

Really looked at me.

For the first time in years.

"Evelyn..."

"I..."

The words wouldn't come.

Because apologies spoken after the evidence appears...

...aren't apologies.

They're survival.

The bride suddenly ripped off her wedding ring.

"You lied to me."

Preston reached toward her.

"Amanda, please—"

She stepped back.

"You framed your own niece."

"You almost killed her."

"I don't even know who you are."

She walked out of the security office without looking back.

Her father quietly followed.

Then her entire family.

The wedding was over.

Not because guests left.

Because the truth arrived.

As officers escorted Preston toward the elevator, he looked at me.

"This is your fault."

I smiled for the first time all night.

"No."

"It's yours."

"The cameras just introduced everyone to the real Preston."

The elevator doors closed.

May you like

And with them...

Thirty years of pretending.
