Chapter 1: The Ambulance Arrives

Chapter 1: The Ambulance Arrives
The first police cruiser screeched to a stop just as the ambulance doors burst open.
Paramedics rushed into the ballroom carrying trauma bags.
The guests instinctively stepped aside.
Not because they cared.
Because blood made expensive shoes uncomfortable.
"Eight-year-old female with head trauma!" I shouted before anyone could stop me.
The lead paramedic knelt beside Sophie.
His face hardened the moment he peeled back the blood-soaked ribbon around her head.
"We need pressure here."
Another medic immediately wrapped thick gauze around the wound.
Sophie whimpered.
I held her tiny hand.
"I'm right here, sweetheart."
"You did nothing wrong."
She looked at me through watery eyes.
"I know..."
"I was just scared."
Behind us, Preston cleared his throat loudly.
"Officer."
He pointed directly at me.
"Before they leave, I'd like to report a theft."
The ballroom became silent again.
One police officer looked from Preston...
...to the bleeding child.
"You want to report a stolen phone?"
"Yes."
"My niece stole it."
The officer frowned.
"The child with the head injury?"
"Exactly."
My father stepped forward.
"We all witnessed it."
"My granddaughter had Preston's phone in her jacket."
Several relatives nodded immediately.
Like obedient jurors.
No one mentioned how the phone had gotten there.
No one mentioned Preston striking a child.
The officer scribbled a few notes.
Then looked at me.
"Ma'am?"
I met his eyes.
"My daughter never touched his phone."
"He planted it."
Preston laughed.
"Can you prove that?"
Before I could answer...
A calm voice interrupted.
"I might be able to."
Everyone turned.
A middle-aged man wearing a navy security blazer stood near the ballroom entrance.
His name tag read:
Daniel Brooks.
Head of Hotel Security.
He looked directly at the officers.
"Our ballroom is covered by four synchronized security cameras."
Preston's smile disappeared.
Daniel continued.
"The cameras record continuously."
"No blind spots."
"And they have audio near the entrance."
For the first time...
My brother looked nervous.
Very nervous.
One officer immediately asked,
"Has anyone accessed the footage?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It's automatically backed up to our secure server."
"It cannot be edited by hotel staff."
I watched Preston swallow.
Hard.
He suddenly forced a smile.
"That's unnecessary."
"This is a family misunderstanding."
The officer looked at him.
"A child was assaulted."
"It's no longer a family matter."
Those words landed harder than any slap.
The color drained from Preston's face.
As the paramedics lifted Sophie onto a stretcher, she reached for me.
"Mommy..."
"Will they believe me?"
I kissed her forehead.
May you like
"This time..."
"They won't have a choice."
