Chapter 7: Lessons in Elegance

The next seven days passed in a whirlwind of silk fabrics, diamond fittings, and agonizing etiquette lessons. Diego had hired Madame Genevieve, an elderly French instructor famous for preparing debutantes for European royalty, to help Marisol navigate the complex social landmines of Mexico City's high society.

"Posture, Marisol! Posture!" Madame Genevieve barked, clapping her hands inside the ballroom. "You are walking like you are carrying a mop bucket! Spine straight, shoulders back, chin elevated. You are the future Mrs. Villaseñor, not a mouse sneaking through the pantry!"

Marisol took a deep breath, fighting back tears of frustration. Books were balanced on her head as she paced across the gleaming wooden floor. "It's hard, Genevieve. For four years, survival meant making myself as small and invisible as possible."

The elderly Frenchwoman’s stern face softened slightly. She stepped closer and gently placed a hand on Marisol's shoulder. "My dear, humility is a virtue, but weakness is a invitation to predators. Those people who will enter this mansion next week do not care if you are kind. They want to see you fail so they can feel superior. You must wear your confidence like armor."

While Marisol endured hours of posture and protocol, Valentina was having the time of her life. Diego had converted an entire floor of the east wing into a state-of-the-art playroom, complete with a indoor jungle gym, thousands of books, and a private tutor to assess her developmental milestones.

Every evening, Diego made it a strict rule to turn off his phone at 6:00 PM. He would sit on the floor with Valentina, building massive wooden castles, letting her stick colorful stars on his expensive designer suits.

"Look, Mommy!" Valentina squeaked one evening, running over to Marisol and pointing at Diego, who was sitting cross-legged with a plastic princess crown resting awkwardly on his head. "Daddy is a king!"

The word Daddy hit the room like a soft, golden light.

Diego froze. He looked up at Valentina, his breathing catching in his throat. His eyes glistened with unshed tears. It was the first time the little girl had called him father.

Slowly, carefully, as if afraid she might shatter, Diego scooped Valentina up into his arms and hugged her tight against his chest. "Yes, my sweet girl," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "And you are my princess."

Marisol watched from the doorway, her heart melting. All the anxiety, the cruel comments from the media, and the agonizing etiquette lessons vanished in that single, beautiful moment. For the first time, she truly felt that they were becoming a real family.

However, miles away in a dark private office, Senator Hector Robles was reviewing a folder handed to him by a private investigator.

A cruel, victorious smile spread across the old politician's face.

"Well, well, well," Hector murmured, running his thumb over a yellowed police report from eight years ago. "It seems our sweet, innocent maid has a very dark shadow in her past. Let's see how Diego’s corporate board handles this."
