Chapter 12: The Iron Matriarch

The arrival of Doña Isabela sent the mansion staff into a state of absolute terror. Maids who had only just relaxed their shoulders were suddenly sprinting down hallways, polishing silver that was already gleaming, and straightening portraits.

At precisely 3:00 PM, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the grand entrance.

Marisol stood next to Diego in the foyer, wearing a simple but elegant beige dress. She squeezed Diego’s hand, seeking strength. When the heavy oak doors opened, the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Doña Isabela walked in. She was in her late seventies, leaning slightly on a silver-headed cane, but her posture was as rigid as a steel rod. Dressed in immaculate Chanel, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, she had piercing, ice-blue eyes that missed absolutely nothing.

"Grandmother," Diego said, stepping forward. His voice held no warmth, only a sterile, guarded politeness.

"Diego," Isabela replied. Her voice was raspy but commanded absolute authority. She did not offer a hug. Instead, her icy gaze bypassed her grandson entirely and locked onto Marisol.

She stared at Marisol for an agonizingly long moment, looking her up and down as if inspecting a flawed piece of merchandise.

"So," Isabela finally said, a thin, cruel smile playing on her lips. "This is the famous housemaid who has turned my family’s legacy into a tabloid circus. I must say, you clean up remarkably well. Though I suppose you have plenty of experience with cleaning."

Marisol felt a familiar sting of humiliation, but before Diego could step in, she took a deep breath, raised her chin, and looked the matriarch dead in the eye.

"Welcome to our home, Doña Isabela. I am Marisol Flores," she said, her voice remarkably steady. "And yes, I kept this house spotless for years. It taught me how to recognize dirt, no matter how much money is used to cover it up."

Diego’s lips twitched into a suppressed smile. Arturo, standing near the door, visibly choked on his breath.

Isabela’s eyes flashed with dangerous amusement. "Spirited. My daughter-in-law was a fool for underestimating you. Where is the child?"

Right on cue, Valentina walked out from the parlor, holding her beloved stuffed rabbit. She stopped a few feet away, her solemn, dark eyes staring up at the terrifying old woman.

Isabela stepped closer, leaning on her cane. "She has the Villaseñor brow. But she looks small. Fragile. Not the bearing of an heir."

Valentina didn't cry. Instead, she stepped forward, reached into her little pocket, and held out a piece of hard candy. "Are you sad?" the three-year-old asked softly. "You look sad."

For a fraction of a second, the iron mask on Isabela’s face faltered. But she quickly recovered, ignoring the candy and turning back to Diego.

"We need to talk," Isabela demanded. "In your study. Now."

"Whatever you have to say to me, you can say in front of my fiancée," Diego replied firmly.

"No, Diego," Isabela countered, tapping her cane on the marble floor. "This concerns the Villaseñor European Trust. The one your grandfather left in my control. Unless you want me to liquidate three billion dollars of your company's backing tomorrow, you will speak to me alone."

Diego’s eyes darkened. He squeezed Marisol’s hand once, kissed her cheek, and whispered, "Don't let her get into your head."

As the study doors closed, Marisol was left standing in the hallway, holding Valentina, realizing that the war was far from over.
