CHAPTER 8 The Car That Revealed Claire’s Final Secret

CHAPTER 8 The Car That Revealed Claire’s Final Secret

The rain started again.

Three years later.

The same kind of rain that fell on the night Claire Westwood died.

Adrian stood outside the old storage facility on the outskirts of Chicago, staring at the locked metal doors.

The police lights reflected against the wet pavement.

Everything about the scene felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The storm.

The silence.

The feeling that he was standing near the truth but still could not reach it.

Natalie stood beside him.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

“She would have wanted this.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“My sister.”

Natalie stared at the storage building.

“She spent her whole life protecting people.”

Her voice became emotional.

“Even people who didn’t deserve it.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

For three years, he had replayed the same memories.

Claire laughing in the kitchen.

Claire reading on the balcony.

Claire leaving him a note before work.

And now every memory carried a question.

What had she discovered?

Who had betrayed her?

Why did she die alone?

A police officer approached.

“Mr. Westwood?”

Adrian turned.

“Yes.”

“I’m Detective Marcus Reed.”

They shook hands.

“We found the vehicle earlier tonight after receiving an anonymous tip.”

Adrian looked toward the storage building.

“Who gave the tip?”

The detective hesitated.

“We don’t know.”

Adrian frowned.

“Another anonymous message?”

The detective looked surprised.

“You received one too?”

Adrian said nothing.

He already knew.

Someone was guiding him.

Someone wanted him to find the truth.

But why?

Detective Reed opened the storage door.

The sound echoed through the empty building.

Inside was darkness.

Then the lights turned on.

And Adrian saw it.

Claire’s Mercedes.

Covered in dust.

Untouched.

Waiting.

His chest tightened.

For a moment, he could not move.

That was the car where he lost everything.

That was the last place his wife had ever been alive.

Natalie covered her mouth.

“Oh my God…”

Adrian slowly walked closer.

His fingers touched the cold metal.

He remembered washing this car with Claire on Sunday mornings.

He remembered her complaining about the radio.

He remembered her singing badly while driving.

The memories almost broke him.

Detective Reed approached carefully.

“We found something unusual.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“The vehicle was not destroyed by the crash.”

Adrian froze.

“What are you saying?”

The detective pointed toward the car.

“There was damage, but not enough to explain the official report.”

A cold silence followed.

Adrian stared.

“So the crash report was wrong?”

The detective nodded.

“Based on what we found, this car was likely moved after the accident.”

Natalie stepped closer.

“Someone moved it?”

“Yes.”

Adrian felt anger rising.

Someone had staged everything.

Someone had hidden evidence.

Someone had spent three years making him believe a lie.

“Open it.”

Detective Reed unlocked the vehicle.

The door opened slowly.

The smell inside immediately hit Adrian.

Old leather.

Dust.

Time.

But underneath it…

Something else.

A familiar scent.

Claire’s perfume.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For one second, he imagined she was sitting there.

Alive.

Waiting for him.

Then reality returned.

The detective searched the front seats.

The glove compartment.

The back area.

Nothing.

Then he stopped.

“Interesting.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

The detective pointed underneath the passenger seat.

“There’s a hidden compartment.”

Adrian’s heart started racing.

Another hidden compartment.

Just like the closet.

Claire had always hidden things.

But only when she had a reason.

The detective opened it.

Inside was a small envelope.

Adrian immediately recognized the handwriting.

Claire.

He took it carefully.

The envelope had his name written on it.

For Adrian.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first sentence destroyed him.

“My love, if you found this, then I was right not to trust everyone around us.”

Adrian swallowed.

Natalie moved closer.

“Read it.”

He continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything, but I knew someone was watching me.”

Adrian looked around.

The empty storage building suddenly felt dangerous.

Claire continued:

“The person who betrayed me is not a stranger.”

His breathing became heavier.

“It is someone who has been part of our family for years.”

Natalie looked at him.

Again.

Family.

Claire had used that word repeatedly.

Family.

Not friend.

Not enemy.

Family.

Adrian continued reading.

“I discovered that someone was using Westwood Technologies to hide illegal financial activity.”

The documents.

The secret accounts.

Caleb.

It all connected.

But then Claire wrote something that made Adrian stop.

“The money is only the beginning.”

He turned the page.

The next line was underlined.

“The person who planned everything is not Caleb.”

Adrian froze.

Natalie looked at him.

“What does it say?”

Adrian slowly answered.

“It says Caleb wasn’t the mastermind.”

Everyone became silent.

Detective Reed looked confused.

“Then who was?”

Adrian continued reading.

The final paragraph was shorter.

More urgent.

“Adrian, I need you to understand something.”

“If anything happens to me…”

“Do not blame the person who looks guilty.”

“Look at the person who benefits the most.”

Adrian stared at the words.

The person who benefits the most.

His mind immediately started searching.

Who gained from Claire’s death?

Who wanted him to move on?

Who pushed Madison into his life?

Who controlled the family?

Who had access to everything?

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

Again.

Adrian answered.

This time, the voice sounded different.

Older.

Broken.

“Adrian…”

He froze.

Because he recognized that voice.

It belonged to someone he never expected.

Someone he believed was on his side.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Adrian’s father had been dead for two years.

The phone should have been impossible.

Then the voice whispered:

“Your mother knows the truth.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

“And she has been protecting the person who killed Claire.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Natalie looked terrified.

Detective Reed reached for his radio.

But Adrian barely heard anything.

Because the impossible had just happened.

His dead father had just called him.

May you like

And he had just accused Adrian’s mother of protecting a murderer.
