CHAPTER 2 The Red Box That Claire Left Behind

Adrian Westwood held the red box in his hand.
For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
The small Cartier case looked exactly the same as he remembered.
The edges were slightly worn.
The gold lettering was faded.
A tiny scratch marked the corner.
It was not just a jewelry box.
It was a piece of Claire.
A piece of the life he had lost.
Behind him, nobody spoke.
Not his mother.
Not Natalie.
Not Madison.
Even Emma stood completely still, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Adrian stared at the box.
“How did this get here?”
His voice was low.
Almost a whisper.
Nobody answered.
He looked toward Madison.
Her eyes were fixed on the red case.
Not with confusion.
Not with curiosity.
With fear.
That was the answer Adrian needed.
“You knew.”
Madison immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I didn’t know what was inside.”
“But you knew the box existed.”
Madison’s lips parted.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
That silence confirmed everything.
Natalie moved closer.
“You knew about Claire’s hidden compartment?”
Madison looked at her.
“I told you, I only found out after the accident.”
Natalie laughed bitterly.
“After the accident?”
Her voice cracked.
“You mean after my sister died?”
Madison looked away.
Adrian slowly opened the box.
Inside was a folded piece of white fabric.
Underneath it was Claire’s wedding ring.
His entire body went cold.
The ring he thought was lost forever.
The ring he had searched for during weeks after the crash.
The ring police said was probably destroyed in the wreckage.
The ring Claire wore every single day of their marriage.
Adrian picked it up carefully.
His fingers trembled.
“No…”
The word escaped his mouth.
Natalie covered her lips.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“That’s impossible.”
Rachel looked at Emma.
The little girl simply stared at the ring.
Like she already knew.
Adrian turned the ring over.
Something was engraved inside.
A message Claire had written herself.
“Forever begins where the truth survives.”
Adrian froze.
He remembered those words.
Claire used to say them whenever they faced difficult times.
She believed secrets destroyed families.
She believed honesty was the only thing strong enough to save them.
Then Adrian noticed something else inside the box.
A small folded piece of paper.
His heart started beating faster.
He reached for it.
Madison suddenly stepped forward.
“Adrian, maybe you shouldn’t read that here.”
Everyone looked at her.
The room became silent.
Adrian slowly turned.
“Why?”
Madison’s face changed.
“I just mean…”
“No.”
His voice became firm.
“You meant something else.”
Madison stopped.
Adrian unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was familiar.
Claire’s handwriting.
The same handwriting he saw every morning on notes beside his coffee cup.
The same handwriting that once filled birthday cards and anniversary letters.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
Because the first sentence was not a greeting.
It was a warning.
“Adrian, if you are reading this, then something happened to me.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Adrian continued reading.
“I need you to understand something. The accident was not an accident.”
Natalie gasped.
Margaret immediately stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
Adrian ignored her.
His eyes stayed on the letter.
“I discovered something about Madison.”
The room exploded into whispers.
Madison’s face became completely white.
Adrian looked up.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
“What did you do?”
Madison shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“Claire wrote your name.”
“She was wrong.”
Adrian looked back at the letter.
There were more lines.
“Madison is not who she pretends to be.”
The words felt like a knife.
Adrian continued.
“She has been hiding something from everyone.”
His hands tightened around the paper.
Then he reached the final sentence.
A sentence written darker than the others.
“If anything happens to me, do not trust the person closest to you.”
The room fell silent.
Adrian looked around.
His mother.
His brother was not there.
Madison.
The woman he almost married.
The woman Claire once considered her closest friend.
Madison suddenly stepped backward.
“Adrian, you cannot believe a letter written by someone who was scared.”
Adrian stared at her.
“She was scared because of you?”
“No.”
“Then why did she write your name?”
Madison had no answer.
The silence became unbearable.
Then suddenly, Adrian’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
The number on the screen was unknown.
He answered.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Westwood.”
Adrian frowned.
“Who is this?”
The voice lowered.
“Someone who knows what really happened to Claire.”
Everyone watched Adrian’s expression change.
The stranger continued.
“You need to leave that room immediately.”
Adrian gripped the phone.
“Why?”
A pause.
Then the man whispered:
“Because whoever killed your wife is still inside your house.”
The call ended.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Madison looked terrified.
Margaret looked shocked.
Natalie looked toward the hallway.
And then Emma quietly pointed behind Adrian.
“There.”
Everyone turned.
At the end of the hallway stood a shadow.
Someone had been listening.
Someone had heard everything.
And before anyone could move…
May you like
The figure disappeared into the darkness.
