CHAPTER 1 The Secret Message Behind the Locked Door

CHAPTER 1 The Secret Message Behind the Locked Door

Adrian Westwood stood halfway up the grand staircase, unable to move.

The entire mansion seemed frozen behind him.

The music had stopped.

The laughter had disappeared.

Three hundred guests remained in the ballroom, whispering about the strange scene they had just witnessed.

But Adrian heard none of it anymore.

All he could hear was Emma’s small voice repeating the same sentence in his mind.

“Your wife should have kept her mouth shut.”

His fingers tightened around the wooden railing.

For three years, Adrian had tried to bury the questions surrounding Claire’s death.

He had forced himself to accept the police report.

He had convinced himself that storms caused accidents.

He had told himself that grief was making him search for answers that did not exist.

But now a four-year-old child had described a hidden door inside Claire’s closet.

A door almost nobody knew about.

A door that should have been impossible for her to find.

Behind him, footsteps approached quickly.

Madison.

Adrian did not need to turn around to know.

He could feel her presence.

“Adrian, wait.”

Her voice sounded softer than before.

Almost desperate.

He slowly turned.

Madison stood several steps below him.

Her perfect makeup was still intact.

Her designer gown still looked flawless.

But her eyes had changed.

The confidence was gone.

For the first time since he met her, Adrian saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What are you hiding?” Adrian asked.

Madison swallowed.

“I’m not hiding anything.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

Adrian stared at her.

“You reached for your phone the second Emma mentioned the closet.”

Madison looked away.

“I was texting because everyone was panicking.”

“Who were you texting?”

Silence.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Natalie stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

Her voice trembled.

“Don’t let her distract you.”

Madison immediately looked at her.

“You have hated me from the beginning.”

Natalie’s expression hardened.

“No.”

She took a step closer.

“I hated that my sister’s best friend moved into her life before the flowers at her funeral had even dried.”

The words hit the staircase like a slap.

Madison’s face changed.

“That is cruel.”

“No.”

Natalie shook her head.

“What’s cruel is pretending you don’t understand why this looks wrong.”

Rachel stood nearby holding Emma’s hand.

The little girl watched everything quietly.

She looked small inside the enormous mansion.

But somehow, Adrian felt like she was the only person in the room who understood the truth.

Adrian turned away from everyone.

“Claire’s room is upstairs.”

His voice was calm.

But everyone could hear the anger underneath.

“I’m opening that closet.”

Margaret Westwood immediately stepped forward.

“Adrian, think carefully.”

He looked at his mother.

“Why?”

“Because once you open that door, you cannot close what comes out.”

The sentence made him stop.

Only for a second.

But Natalie noticed.

So did Madison.

Adrian slowly looked back.

“Mom.”

His voice became colder.

“What exactly do you think I’ll find?”

Margaret said nothing.

That was the problem.

She said nothing.

Adrian continued walking.

The old wooden staircase creaked beneath his feet.

Every step brought him closer to the room he had avoided for three years.

Claire’s room.

The place where her perfume still lingered.

The place where her books remained untouched.

The place where he had once believed they would grow old together.

When he reached the hallway, Adrian stopped.

The door was exactly as he remembered.

Dark wood.

Silver handle.

A small scratch near the bottom from when Claire’s favorite chair accidentally hit it.

He placed his hand on the doorknob.

For a moment, he almost turned away.

Because opening that door meant admitting something.

That he never truly believed Claire’s death was an accident.

That somewhere deep inside, he had always suspected someone had taken her away.

He opened the door.

The room was silent.

Dust covered the furniture.

The curtains were closed.

Everything remained exactly the way Claire left it.

Rachel entered slowly with Emma.

Natalie followed.

Madison stayed near the doorway.

She looked like she wanted to leave.

But she knew everyone was watching her.

Adrian walked toward the closet.

The massive wooden doors stood untouched.

He reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

“Who else knew about this?”

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked back.

“I asked who else knew about this closet.”

Madison finally spoke.

“I did.”

The room went silent.

Adrian turned.

“What?”

Madison took a slow breath.

“I knew about it.”

Natalie’s eyes widened.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“When?”

Madison looked down.

“After Claire died.”

The words felt impossible.

“You entered my dead wife’s private room after her funeral?”

Madison immediately shook her head.

“No, Adrian. It wasn’t like that.”

“Then explain.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emma suddenly pointed toward the closet.

“The door is behind there.”

Everyone looked.

Adrian walked closer.

He pushed the dresses aside.

Behind the expensive gowns and old memories was the cedar panel.

Still hidden.

Still waiting.

His hand touched the edge.

And then he noticed something.

A tiny mark.

A fresh scratch.

Someone had opened it recently.

Adrian’s breathing stopped.

Because that meant one thing.

The closet had not been untouched for three years.

Someone had been inside.

Recently.

He pulled the hidden panel open.

A small compartment appeared behind the dresses.

Inside was darkness.

And at the very back…

Something red.

A small red box.

Exactly like Emma described.

Adrian reached inside.

His hand touched the box.

But before he could pull it out, Madison suddenly whispered:

“Adrian…”

Everyone turned.

Her face was completely pale.

Because she knew exactly what was inside.

And she knew that once Adrian opened it…

May you like

There would be no way back.
