CHAPTER 14 The Person Behind Claire’s Silence

CHAPTER 14 The Person Behind Claire’s Silence

The photograph remained on Adrian Westwood’s phone screen.

A little girl.

Four years old.

A silver necklace around her neck.

The same necklace Claire had hidden.

The same necklace someone tried to take away.

Lily.

For a long moment, Adrian could not breathe.

Everything around him became distant.

The mansion.

The voices.

The footsteps outside.

All he could see was the face of a child who had unknowingly become the center of a dangerous secret.

Natalie stood beside him.

“Adrian…”

He slowly turned the phone toward her.

Her expression changed immediately.

“That’s her?”

Adrian nodded.

“Someone sent this to me.”

Natalie looked frightened.

“They know we found her.”

“Yes.”

“And they want you to know.”

Adrian stared at the message.

“She is the reason Claire died.”

His jaw tightened.

“No.”

Natalie looked at him.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“Claire didn’t die because of Lily.”

His voice became stronger.

“Claire died because someone was afraid of the truth.”

For the first time in three years…

Adrian was certain.

Not hopeful.

Not guessing.

Certain.

Claire had not been running from a problem.

She had been fighting one.

Detective Reed entered the room moments later.

“We traced the message.”

Adrian immediately turned.

“And?”

The detective placed his phone on the table.

“Encrypted.”

Adrian frowned.

“But you found something.”

Detective Reed nodded.

“Yes.”

He showed them the information.

“The message came from a device connected to a private network.”

“Whose network?”

The detective hesitated.

“Westwood Foundation.”

The room became silent.

Again.

The same place.

The same name.

The same connection.

Adrian slowly sat down.

“My family foundation.”

Detective Reed nodded.

“Someone inside your organization is involved.”

Adrian looked at the letter from Claire.

The documents.

The hidden messages.

The child.

Everything pointed in one direction.

Someone had been using the Westwood empire to hide secrets.

But who?

Across the city, Madison Cole sat inside a dark hotel room.

She had not slept.

Not since the engagement party.

Not since Emma pointed at her.

Not since Adrian looked at her like she was a stranger.

Her entire future had collapsed in one night.

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Caleb.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

But fear made her answer.

“What do you want?”

Caleb’s voice was quiet.

“You need to leave Chicago.”

Madison froze.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because Adrian is getting closer.”

Madison laughed bitterly.

“You’re worried about Adrian?”

“No.”

Caleb’s voice changed.

“I’m worried about who Adrian is going to find.”

Madison sat up.

“What does that mean?”

Silence.

Then:

“Claire found everything.”

Madison frowned.

“She found what?”

Caleb took a breath.

“The truth about Lily.”

Madison closed her eyes.

“So it’s true.”

“Yes.”

The answer was almost a whisper.

“She exists.”

Madison stood.

“Caleb…”

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You don’t understand.”

A pause.

“I was there.”

Caleb became silent.

Madison looked toward the window.

“I saw Claire that night.”

The words shocked even herself.

“I saw how scared she was.”

Caleb said nothing.

“She told me she knew.”

“Knew what?”

Madison swallowed.

“That someone in the family was lying.”

The silence on the phone became heavier.

Then Caleb asked:

“Did she tell you about Lily?”

Madison closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

A long pause.

“What else did she say?”

Madison’s voice became smaller.

“She said she trusted Adrian.”

“And?”

“She said she was afraid he would never forgive the person responsible.”

Caleb went silent.

Then Madison heard something unexpected.

Fear.

Real fear.

“She knew.”

Madison frowned.

“Knew what?”

Caleb whispered:

“She knew who was behind it.”

The call ended.

Back at the Westwood mansion, Adrian returned to Claire’s closet.

He needed one more answer.

Something bothered him.

The hidden compartment.

The letter.

The necklace.

Claire had planned everything.

She knew something might happen.

But she had not hidden the evidence randomly.

She had left a path.

A trail.

Adrian carefully searched the wooden compartment again.

Behind the red Cartier box…

He felt something.

A small piece of paper.

Hidden behind the wall.

He pulled it out.

It was another note.

Only five words.

“The first betrayal was mine.”

Adrian stared.

What did that mean?

Claire’s handwriting continued underneath.

“Adrian, I need you to understand.”

“The person who hurt me was not always my enemy.”

His heart tightened.

Someone who hurt her.

But was not always her enemy.

A person she once trusted.

A person she once loved.

Then he noticed something else.

A name written at the bottom.

Not Caleb.

Not Madison.

Not Margaret.

Someone else.

Someone impossible.

Adrian dropped the paper.

Because the name belonged to the last person he expected.

His own father.

Victor Westwood.

But Victor was dead.

He could not explain.

He could not confess.

He could not defend himself.

Unless…

Unless Claire had discovered something before Victor died.

Adrian immediately called Detective Reed.

“Find everything about my father’s final year.”

The detective paused.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked at Claire’s note.

“Because I think we have been investigating the wrong death.”

A silence followed.

Then Reed asked:

“What do you mean?”

Adrian looked toward the window.

“I think Claire wasn’t the only person someone wanted gone.”

That night, a security alarm suddenly activated inside the mansion.

Everyone rushed downstairs.

A guard stood near the entrance.

“Mr. Westwood.”

Adrian approached.

“What happened?”

The guard looked nervous.

“Someone entered the property.”

“Who?”

The guard handed him the security footage.

Adrian watched.

A figure wearing dark clothing walked through the mansion.

Straight toward Claire’s room.

Straight toward the hidden closet.

Adrian leaned closer.

The person removed their hood.

His entire body froze.

Because the person standing inside Claire’s room…

Was someone Adrian knew.

Someone who had supposedly disappeared three years ago.

Someone who should never have been there.

Claire’s former assistant.

Emily Carter.

But Emily was not alone.

Someone else stepped into the room.

Someone standing behind her.

Someone Adrian never expected.

The camera zoomed in.

And Adrian whispered:

“No…”

Because the person beside Emily was the one person who had been dead for two years.

May you like

Victor Westwood.
