Chapter 4: The Voice from the Grave

The Westwood estate’s wine cellar was built like a vault, with reinforced steel doors and climate-controlled concrete walls. It was soundproof, inescapable, and currently housing Adrian’s fiancée and his brother.

Upstairs in the grand study, the atmosphere was thick with a heavy, suffocating dread.

Adrian sat behind the massive mahogany desk, staring at the black USB drive resting in the center of the leather blotter. Natalie paced in front of the fireplace, the rhythmic clicking of her heels a sharp contrast to the deadly silence of the room. Margaret sat in a high-backed leather chair in the corner, staring blankly at the wall, a glass of untouched scotch in her trembling hand. Her entire empire, her pristine family name, was collapsing in real-time.

"Are you going to plug it in?" Natalie asked, stopping her pacing to look at Adrian.

Adrian picked up the drive. It felt incredibly heavy, a digital tombstone holding the last echoes of the woman he loved. "I need to know what we are dealing with before I call the police. If Caleb and Madison were embezzling, there is a paper trail. If they hired someone to tamper with the car... there's a third party."

He plugged the USB into his laptop.

A single file appeared on the screen. An audio file named Confession.mp3.

Adrian clicked it.

The room filled with the soft, static hiss of a recording. And then, a voice.

"Adrian."

Natalie choked back a sob at the sound of her sister’s voice. It was so clear, so alive.

"If you're listening to this, it means I didn't make it home tonight. I'm sitting in the car right now, outside the country club. It's raining so hard."

The sound of heavy rain drumming against a car roof could be heard in the background.

"I found out about the offshore accounts today," Claire’s voice continued, trembling with fear. "Madison didn't just steal money, Adrian. She and Caleb have been laundering funds for the Petrov syndicate. The Westwood company is being used to wash cartel money. I confronted Caleb. He begged me not to tell you. He said they would kill him."

Margaret let out a sharp gasp, the scotch glass slipping from her hand and shattering on the floor. "Oh my god... the Petrovs."

Adrian’s blood ran ice cold. The Petrov syndicate was one of the most ruthless organized crime families in the Midwest. They didn't just break legs; they made entire families disappear.

"Then Madison found me," the recording continued. "She laughed, Adrian. She laughed in my face. She told me if I went to the police, she would have you killed. She said the Petrovs had a man inside your security team. Someone close to you. She said I had to keep my mouth shut or you would die."

Adrian’s head snapped up. A man inside the security team.

He looked at the heavy oak doors of the study. Marcus and his men were standing right outside.

"I'm driving to the police station now," Claire’s voice cracked, tears evident in her tone. "I can't let them ruin you. I can't let them hurt you. But the car... the brake pedal is soft. I think they did something to it. If I don't make it... look at the ledger in the hidden closet. I hid it behind the wall panel. Avenge me, Adrian. Don't let them get away with this."

The recording clicked off, leaving only the sound of Margaret’s ragged breathing.

Adrian didn't have time to process the grief. His tactical mind, honed by years of ruthless corporate takeovers, instantly kicked into survival mode.

Someone inside the security team.

He quietly reached into his desk drawer and wrapped his hand around the cold, heavy grip of the 9mm Glock he kept for emergencies.

"Natalie," Adrian whispered, his eyes fixed on the study doors. "Get under the desk."

"What?" Natalie asked, confused.

"Do it now."

Before Natalie could move, the heavy oak doors of the study swung open.

Marcus, the head of security, stood in the doorway. He wasn't holding his standard-issue radio. He was holding a suppressed pistol, and it was aimed directly at Adrian’s chest.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Westwood," Marcus said, his voice flat and emotionless. "But Madison managed to send one text before you took the phone. The boss says loose ends need to be tied up."
