Chapter 15: The Aftermath and the Closet

The sun crested over the horizon, painting the storm-ravaged Westwood estate in hues of gold and pale pink. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the air smelling of wet grass and cordite.

The lawn was a sea of law enforcement vehicles. Crime scene investigators moved through the mansion like ants, cataloging the staggering amount of violence that had occurred within its walls.

Adrian sat on the tailgate of an ambulance, a paramedic taping a heavy gauze bandage over his ribs. He watched quietly as two coroners wheeled a pair of black body bags out the front door. One was Caleb. The other was Madison.

Margaret Westwood stood near the command tent, surrounded by police. She was wrapped in a foil thermal blanket, looking older and more fragile than Adrian had ever seen her. When she saw Caleb's body bag being loaded into the coroner's van, she completely broke down, collapsing into Natalie’s arms.

Adrian felt a pang of sorrow, but it was distant. The family he thought he knew had never existed. It was a facade built on greed and secrets.

An FBI special agent, a stern-looking woman named Harris, approached the ambulance holding the leather-bound ledger in a plastic evidence bag.

"Mr. Westwood," Agent Harris said, her tone a mix of professional detachment and genuine awe. "I've skimmed through this. The amount of offshore routing, the shell companies... it’s going to take years to untangle, but you just handed us the entire Petrov syndicate on a silver platter. Warrants are already being executed in Chicago."

"Make sure it burns them to the ground," Adrian replied quietly.

"It will. I also listened to the audio file your wife left," Harris softened her voice. "I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. She was a very brave woman to gather this evidence."

"She was," Adrian agreed, a small, sad smile touching his lips.

Across the lawn, Rachel was holding Emma’s hand as a police officer took her statement. Emma, still clutching her stuffed rabbit, saw Adrian and waved.

Adrian hopped off the ambulance and walked over to them.

"Are they treating you okay?" Adrian asked.

Rachel nodded, her eyes full of profound gratitude. "They are. Adrian... how can we ever repay you? You saved our lives."

"You already repaid me," Adrian said softly, crouching down to look at Emma. "You gave me the truth. You gave me my life back."

He looked back up at Rachel. "The Westwood company is going to be restructured. I’m liquidating my mother's assets. But I've already made a call to my attorneys. A trust fund has been set up for Emma. Her education, her future, it's all covered. And you never have to wear a housekeeper’s uniform again, Rachel. You're set for life."

Rachel covered her mouth, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. She couldn't speak, so she simply pulled Adrian into a tight, desperate hug.

An hour later, the police allowed Adrian to go back inside the house to retrieve some personal belongings before it was entirely locked down as a crime scene.

He didn't go to his guest room. He walked up the grand staircase and down the hall, stepping into the master suite one last time.

The room was destroyed. The closet was shredded by gunfire, the cedar panels ripped apart.

Adrian stood in the center of the wreckage. The suffocating weight that had pressed down on his chest for three long years was finally gone. The mystery was solved. The monsters were dead.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the red Cartier box. He opened it, looking at Claire’s diamond wedding ring shining in the morning light.

He didn't feel the agonizing grief anymore. He just felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

"I heard you, Claire," Adrian whispered into the quiet, sunlit room. "I checked the closet."

He closed the box, turned his back on the wreckage of his past, and walked out of the room, ready to finally begin the rest of his life.
