Chapter 11: The Siege Begins

The explosion that blew the front gates off their hinges echoed through the Westwood estate like a thunderclap, vibrating up through the stone floor of the wine cellar.
Adrian stood frozen for a fraction of a second, the tactical reality of the situation downloading into his brain. Six heavily armored SUVs meant at least twenty men. These weren’t local thugs; the Petrov syndicate employed ex-Spetsnaz, disgraced military contractors, and cartel enforcers. They had come to scrub the estate clean, retrieve the ledger, and leave no witnesses.
Caleb let out a wet, rattling cough. His eyes, wide and unblinking, stared up at the vaulted ceiling. The blood pooling around him had stopped expanding.
Adrian looked down at his brother. Caleb was gone. The boy who had once hidden behind Adrian during thunderstorms had died a coward, drowning in his own blood on a cold stone floor, killed by the woman he had conspired with.
"Get up," Adrian snarled, grabbing Madison by her torn silk collar. She was still gasping, the blow to her solar plexus leaving her paralyzed and weeping.
He dragged her unceremoniously across the rough stone, her designer heels scraping against the floor. He threw her against a heavy iron pipe that ran vertically along the far wall of the cellar. Pulling a pair of heavy industrial zip-ties from the utility shelf—left over from a recent HVAC repair—he bound her wrists tightly behind the pipe.
"Adrian... please..." Madison wheezed, her voice a pathetic croak. "They're going to kill me."
"If you're lucky, the police will get here first," Adrian said coldly, checking his shotgun. Three shells left. It wasn't enough for a war. "If the Petrovs find you, tell them you failed. Tell them I have the ledger."
He tucked the leather-bound book securely into the inner pocket of his soaked vest. He didn't look back as he walked out of the wine cellar, locking the heavy steel door behind him. Madison’s muffled sobs were instantly swallowed by the sheer size of the underground corridor.
Adrian sprinted back toward the panic room. He tapped the external intercom button. "Rachel. It's Adrian. Do not open the door."
“Mr. Westwood?” Rachel’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with panic. “We heard an explosion. Emma is terrified.”
"The cartel is here. They breached the front gate. You are sitting behind three inches of titanium. Their localized jammers mean they have no idea this room exists on the grid. Stay completely quiet. Do not unlock this door until you hear me say Claire’s name. Do you understand?"
“I understand. God protect you, Adrian.”
Adrian pulled away from the panel. He needed heavier firepower. He needed Marcus’s armory.
He retraced his steps through the hidden servant’s passage, climbing back to the second floor. The mansion was eerily quiet inside, but outside, the roar of SUV engines and shouting men cut through the storm. Flashlight beams swept across the tall windows like searchlights in a prison yard.
Adrian slipped into the master suite. Marcus was still unconscious on the floor of the closet. Adrian quickly stripped the mercenary of his tactical rig, strapping the heavy Kevlar vest over his own soaked clothes. He retrieved Marcus’s suppressed HK MP5 submachine gun, slapped in a fresh magazine, and grabbed three spares, shoving them into the vest pouches.
He felt the weight of the tactical gear settle over his shoulders. For three years, he had been a ghost haunting his own life, drowning in whiskey and board meetings, trying to numb the gnawing suspicion that his wife had been taken from him.

Tonight, the ghost was armed.
Adrian checked the chamber of the MP5, the metallic clack snapping him into a state of absolute, deadly focus. He stepped out of the bedroom and moved toward the grand staircase. The hunters were stepping into his house, but they had no idea they were the prey.
