Chapter 14: Dawn of Justice

The sound of distant, wailing sirens cut through the dying storm.
High up on the main road, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen state trooper cruisers and SWAT vehicles tore through the darkness. Margaret and Natalie had made it to the highway.
In the grand foyer, the cartel leader heard the sirens. He checked his watch, cursing violently in Russian. The operation was blown. They had lost too many men, they didn't have the ledger, and the authorities were two minutes away.
"Abort! Everyone fall back to the vehicles! We're leaving!" he screamed into the radio.
He turned to sprint toward the rear exit, but a voice stopped him in his tracks.
"You're not going anywhere."
The leader turned slowly.
Adrian stood at the top of the basement stairs. He was bleeding, exhausted, and running purely on the fumes of vengeance. He held the ledger in his left hand and the shotgun in his right.
"You want this?" Adrian asked, his voice echoing in the ruined foyer. "Come and take it."
The leader sneered, raising his assault rifle. "You're a dead man."
He squeezed the trigger. Click.
His weapon was jammed from the plaster dust and debris. Swearing, he dropped the rifle, drew a heavy combat knife from his chest rig, and charged the stairs.
Adrian didn't shoot. He tossed the empty shotgun aside. He wanted this to be personal.
As the massive Russian lunged, bringing the knife down in a brutal arc, Adrian stepped inside the guard. He grabbed the man’s wrist with both hands, twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. The leader roared in pain, dropping the knife, but threw a massive left hook that caught Adrian squarely in the jaw.
Adrian staggered backward, tasting blood, but used the momentum to pivot. He drove his knee squarely into the leader's groin, then grabbed the man by his tactical vest and threw him forward.
The cartel leader pitched headfirst down the marble stairs, tumbling violently until he hit the bottom landing. He didn't get back up.
Outside, the estate was suddenly bathed in the blinding strobe of police lights. Helicopters chopped through the night sky, their spotlights illuminating the cartel SUVs desperately trying to flee across the lawn. SWAT teams poured out of armored vehicles, swarming the property with military precision. The remaining mercenaries threw down their weapons, realizing they were entirely surrounded.
Deep in the wine cellar, Madison Cole heard the sirens.
She slumped against the pipe she was zip-tied to, a hollow, hysterical laugh escaping her lips. It was over. The empire she had murdered for, the luxury she had sold her soul to attain, was gone.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the wine cellar burst open.
A cartel enforcer, bleeding from a shoulder wound and desperate to find a place to hide from the swarming police, stumbled into the room. He locked the door behind him and turned around, freezing when he saw Madison bound to the pipe.
He recognized her. She was the contact. The one who was supposed to make this easy.
"You," the enforcer snarled, raising his pistol, his eyes filled with terrified rage. "You set us up."
Madison’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "No! No, I didn't! Please, you work for me! I can pay you! I have millions!"
The enforcer just shook his head. The syndicate didn't forgive failure.
Upstairs, Adrian heard a single, muffled gunshot echo from deep beneath the floorboards. He closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Madison’s bill had come due.
"Police! Drop your weapons and put your hands in the air!"
A SWAT team breached the foyer, their rifles trained on Adrian.

Adrian slowly raised his hands, the leather-bound ledger clutched tightly in his fist.
"I'm the homeowner," Adrian said, his voice exhausted but steady. "I have everything you need right here."
