Chapter 7: The Burner Phone

The Moonlight Motel was a decaying strip of rooms located off a neglected state highway, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a flickering neon sign. Marcus paid a heavily tattooed clerk in crumpled twenty-dollar bills, securing a room at the far end of the lot, facing the woods.

Inside, the room smelled of stale smoke and heavy industrial bleach. Claire laid Sophie on one of the sagging double beds, pulling the scratchy polyester blanket up to her chin. The little girl didn't stir. Exhaustion had claimed her entirely.

Marcus dropped his duffel bag on the floor and immediately moved to the window, peering through a crack in the heavy blackout curtains. "We’re clear for now. But we need to act fast. By morning, Eleanor will realize the CPS raid failed and that you've run."

"I need a phone," Claire said, pacing the worn carpet. "If I use my cell, they'll trace the ping."

Marcus tossed her a cheap, plastic flip phone. "Burner. I bought a pack of them a year ago. Just in case. The number is unlisted. Use it, then we destroy it."

Claire caught the phone. Her hands were shaking again, but not from fear. It was the adrenaline. She dialed a number she had known by heart since she was a child. The phone rang three times before it was answered.

"Hello?" Helen’s voice floated through the receiver, sounding groggy.

"Did you get your thirty pieces of silver, Mom?" Claire asked. Her voice was terrifyingly calm.

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Claire? Oh my god, Claire, where are you? The police called me, they said you ran away with Sophie—"

"Cut the crap, Mom," Claire snapped, the anger finally bleeding through. "I saw the video. Thomas was recording the party. I saw you take the bracelet from Eleanor and put it in Sophie’s bag."

Silence hung heavy on the line, suffocating and dark.

"Claire, sweetheart, please..." Helen’s voice broke into a pathetic sob. "You don't understand. I was in so much trouble. The men I owed money to... they were going to hurt me. Eleanor found out. She offered to pay off the debts. She said she just needed a reason to get Sophie away from you for a little while, just to teach you a lesson for looking into David's accident."

"To teach me a lesson?" Claire echoed, her voice rising before she forced it back down into a harsh whisper. "Richard tried to beat her with a belt! He humiliated her in front of fifty people, and you stood there and watched!"

"I didn't know he was going to do that! I swear, Claire! Eleanor said it would just be a quiet conversation. She said you were unstable. That taking the trust fund away from you was for the best!"

"How much?" Claire demanded, ignoring her mother’s tears.

"What?"

"How much did she pay you to sell your own flesh and blood?"

Helen hesitated, her sobs hitching. "Two hundred thousand. And she... she promised me a monthly stipend once she got control of Sophie's trust."

Claire closed her eyes, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek. Not for herself, but for the mother she had just lost forever. She pressed a button on the burner phone, ensuring the voice recorder app Marcus had installed was capturing every word.

"You listen to me," Claire said, her tone freezing over. "You are dead to me. If I ever see you near my daughter again, I won't call the police. I will handle you myself. You tell Eleanor she underestimated me. And you tell her I have David's ledger."

"Claire, no! Don't do this!" Helen shrieked. "They'll kill you! Just give them what they want!"

Claire hung up the phone, pulled the battery out, and snapped the plastic device in half with her bare hands, throwing the pieces into the motel trash can.

She turned to Marcus, who had already set up his heavy, encrypted laptop on the rickety desk.

"Did you get it?" Marcus asked.

"I got the confession," Claire said, wiping her face. "Now, show me the ledger. I want to see exactly who we're taking down."
