Chapter 11: The Live Stream

The heavy steel door of the server farm groaned, the hinges buckling under the rhythmic, violent thuds of a police battering ram. Dust rained down from the ceiling tiles. Red and blue lights pulsed through the frosted glass windows, casting long, nightmarish shadows across the humming computer banks.

“Get down! Both of you, get down on the ground!” a voice boomed from a megaphone outside.

Claire didn’t move. She held Sophie tightly against her chest, feeling her daughter’s frantic heartbeat echoing her own. Marcus stood a few feet away, his hands resting on the edge of the computer terminal.

“Claire,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly steady over the noise. “The file transfer is complete. The ledger, the video, the audio—it’s everywhere. Reddit, Twitter, major news outlets. But the local cops outside don't know that yet. They think you’re a deranged kidnapper.”

CRASH.

The heavy door finally gave way, slamming against the concrete wall. Six SWAT officers flooded into the room, assault rifles raised, laser sights painting erratic red dots across Claire’s chest and Marcus’s face.

“Hands in the air! Do it now!” the lead officer screamed, his face obscured by a tactical visor.

Claire slowly raised her free hand, keeping her other arm securely wrapped around Sophie. “My name is Claire Hale. I am unarmed. My daughter is safe. I am not having a psychotic break.”

“Shut up and get on the ground!” a second officer yelled, moving in to grab her.

“Stop!” Marcus barked. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, he tapped a single key on the laptop. A massive flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall behind them flared to life.

It was a live stream. And in the corner of the screen, the viewer count was skyrocketing: 10,000... 50,000... 150,000.

“You are currently broadcasting live to over a hundred and fifty thousand people,” Marcus declared, his voice cutting through the chaos. “The camera is right above the monitor. Every move you make, every word you say, is being recorded and transmitted across the globe. You are being watched by the FBI, the DOJ, and half the country.”

The SWAT officers froze. The lead officer lowered his rifle slightly, glancing nervously at the glowing red light on the webcam.

“What is this?” the officer demanded, his voice losing its aggressive edge.

“An intervention,” Claire said, finding her voice. Her fear was melting away, replaced by the cold, hard steel of a mother pushed to the brink. She looked directly into the camera. “Five minutes ago, we published a ledger belonging to the Hale Investment Firm. It details millions of dollars in bribes paid to city officials, judges, and law enforcement. The Amber Alert on my daughter was a fake, authorized by District Attorney Victor Vance to silence me.”

The officers exchanged uncertain looks. The laser sights dropped to the floor.

“Check your phones,” Marcus commanded. “Check the news. You’re being used as hitmen by the DA. If you pull a trigger tonight, you will be doing it on live television, and you will spend the rest of your lives in federal prison.”

One of the officers in the back unclipped a radio from his vest. “Command, this is Team Alpha. We have the suspects, but... you need to see what’s happening online. It’s a mess out here.”

Static hissed over the radio before a panicked voice replied, “Stand down, Alpha. I repeat, stand down! Do not touch Claire Hale. The FBI just breached the precinct. The DA is in custody.”

The air in the server room seemed to vanish.

The lead officer slowly lowered his weapon entirely, flipping up his visor to reveal wide, stunned eyes. He looked at Claire, then at Sophie, who was peeking out from behind her mother’s coat.

“Ma'am,” the officer said, his voice trembling slightly. “We’re going to need you to come with us. But... you aren't under arrest. You need protective custody. Right now.”

Claire exhaled, her knees nearly giving out. She looked at Marcus, who offered a grim, exhausted nod. They had lit the match, and the city was burning.
