Chapter 6: The Ultimate Betrayal

Claire stared at the glowing screen of her phone, the pixelated image burning itself into her retinas. The video was paused at the crucial twelfth second. In the background, partially obscured by a blooming hydrangea bush, stood Eleanor Hale. And right beside her, hand slipping into the hidden compartment of Sophie’s yellow backpack, was Helen. Claire’s own mother.
The silence in Marcus Thorne’s apartment was deafening, broken only by the relentless drumming of the rain against the single pane window.
"Your mother?" Marcus asked, his voice low, breaking the spell.
Claire couldn’t speak. The air had been sucked from her lungs. She watched the short clip again, zooming in on her mother’s face. Helen looked nervous, her eyes darting around the lawn, but her hands were steady as she took the Cartier bracelet from Eleanor and slid it into the bag. It wasn't a mistake. It was a calculated, deliberate act of treason.
"Why?" Claire finally whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth. "Why would she do this to her own granddaughter? To me?"
Marcus sighed, leaning against his cluttered desk. He crossed his arms over his chest, his cynical eyes scanning Claire’s devastated expression. "Money makes people do things they never thought themselves capable of. What's her financial situation like?"
Claire closed her eyes, the puzzle pieces clicking together with sickening clarity. Helen had always been terrible with money. After Claire’s father died, Helen had squandered his modest life insurance policy on bad investments and a quiet, persistent gambling habit. For the past five years, Claire had been secretly paying her mother’s rent. But recently, Helen had stopped asking for money. She had bought a new car. She had gone on a cruise to the Bahamas. When Claire asked how she afforded it, Helen claimed she had won a small lottery settlement.
"Eleanor," Claire breathed, opening her eyes. "Eleanor bought her."
"The Hales don't have friends, Claire. They have employees and hostages," Marcus said grimly. "If Eleanor figured out your mother’s weaknesses, she would have exploited them without hesitation. She needed someone on the inside to plant that bracelet. Someone you would never, ever suspect. Who better than your own mother?"
A wave of nausea washed over Claire, followed instantly by a surge of white-hot, blinding rage. Her mother had sold them out. She had watched Richard raise a belt to Sophie and done absolutely nothing.
"We can't stay here," Claire said, her voice suddenly cold and devoid of emotion. She slipped her phone into her pocket. "If Eleanor owns my mother, she knows everything about me. She knows my routines. She probably put a tracker on my car."
Marcus nodded, his lethargy replaced by the sharp instincts of a man who had survived prison. "You're right. If they’re willing to use your mother to set up a CPS raid, they won't stop there. Go get your daughter. We're taking my truck."
Claire ran back down to her sedan. The rain was coming down in sheets now. She opened the back door and gently unbuckled Sophie, who was still deeply asleep, her thumb resting near her mouth. Claire lifted her, wrapping her coat around the small girl to shield her from the storm.
As she hurried back toward the alley where Marcus was pulling up in a battered, rusted Ford pickup, Claire cast a paranoid glance over her shoulder. Every shadow looked like a threat. Every parked car looked like surveillance.
She climbed into the passenger seat, settling Sophie onto her lap. Marcus threw the truck into drive, the tires spinning on the wet pavement before catching traction.
"Where are we going?" Claire asked, looking at the USB drive Marcus had placed in the center console. The drive containing the Hale family's darkest secrets.
"Off the grid," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror. "I know a motel on the outskirts of the city. Cash only. No cameras. We need to look at that ledger, and you need to figure out exactly how much your mother has told them."

Claire looked down at her sleeping daughter, tightening her arms around her. Her husband was dead. Her in-laws were monsters. And her mother was a traitor.
Claire was completely alone. But as she touched the cold plastic of the USB drive, a dangerous realization settled over her: a mother with nothing left to lose is the most dangerous creature on earth.
