Chapter 12: The Federal Umbrella

The FBI field office was a stark contrast to the grimy, corrupt local precincts Claire had grown accustomed to fearing. It was sterile, blindingly bright, and buzzing with the chaotic energy of a massive, multi-agency takedown.

Claire sat in a plush chair in a secure conference room, sipping stale coffee from a foam cup. Sophie was asleep on a leather sofa nearby, covered in an FBI-issued windbreaker. Marcus was in the adjacent room, giving his statement to a team of forensic accountants who were currently treating him like a rockstar.

The door opened, and a tall, sharp-featured woman in a tailored pantsuit walked in. She carried a thick file and projected an aura of absolute authority.

“Mrs. Hale. I’m Special Agent Elena Reyes. I’m taking over your case,” she said, pulling out a chair and sitting across from Claire.

“Where are the Hales?” Claire asked immediately.

“Richard and Eleanor Hale were apprehended twenty minutes ago attempting to board a private jet at the municipal airport,” Agent Reyes replied, a hint of satisfaction in her tone. “They are currently in federal holding. We’ve also frozen every asset, bank account, and trust fund associated with the family—including your daughter's, pending investigation.”

Claire let out a breath. “And my mother?”

Agent Reyes’s expression softened, just a fraction. “Helen Davies was arrested at her apartment. She confessed to planting the bracelet and accepting a two-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from Eleanor Hale. She’s cooperating, but she’s facing serious extortion and child endangerment charges.”

Claire closed her eyes. It hurt, a dull ache in her chest, but she felt no pity. Her mother had made her choice.

“What about Julianne Vance?” Claire asked, sitting up straighter. “She was at Pier 44. She was shooting at the men Eleanor sent.”

“Julianne is currently in surgery at General Hospital,” Reyes said, her face tightening. “She took a bullet to the shoulder, but she’s going to live. The men who attacked you were cartel fixers. Which brings me to why I’m talking to you, Claire.”

Reyes leaned forward, placing the file on the table. She opened it to reveal a glossy photograph of a heavily tattooed man with dead, shark-like eyes.

“The Hales weren't just bribing politicians,” Reyes explained, her voice dropping to a serious, hushed tone. “They were laundering money for the Sinaloa cartel. You didn't just expose a local corruption ring. You exposed a multi-billion-dollar pipeline. You publicly humiliated some of the most dangerous people on the planet. And they do not forgive.”

Claire’s blood ran cold. “You’re saying we aren't safe.”

“I’m saying the Hales were the middle-management,” Reyes said bluntly. “The people above them are going to want to make an example out of the woman who blew the whistle. We are placing you and Sophie in the Witness Protection Program. Tonight.”

Claire looked at her sleeping daughter. They had just survived a nightmare, only to wake up in a warzone.

“No,” Claire said, her voice surprising both of them with its steadiness.

Agent Reyes blinked. “Excuse me?”

“If you put us in WitSec, we’ll be running for the rest of our lives,” Claire said, her mind racing. “Eleanor Hale knows exactly how I think. She knows my habits. If she cuts a deal with the cartel to give me up in exchange for her own protection in prison, she’ll find me. I won't raise my daughter looking over my shoulder.”

“Claire, you don't have the training to fight a cartel,” Reyes warned.

“No, I don't,” Claire agreed, leaning across the table, her hazel eyes burning with a fierce, calculating light. “But you do. I want a deal, Agent Reyes. I’ll act as bait. We draw the cartel out on our terms, using Eleanor’s own arrogance against her.”
