Chapter 9: Bloodlines

Victor Hale couldn't breathe.

He stared at the faded photograph lying open on the table.

His grandfather.

William Hale.

Standing beside the mysterious woman who had spared his life only hours earlier.

The caption beneath the photograph was unmistakable.

Founder.

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No..."

"The man who raised me died when I was twelve."

The Archivist looked at him with quiet sympathy.

"No."

"The man who disappeared from your life disappeared on purpose."

Victor's eyes widened.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying William Hale never died."

The words echoed through the vast underground library.

For the first time since his arrest, Victor looked genuinely terrified.

Lucas folded his arms.

"I spent years investigating William Hale."

Victor looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Lucas gave him a tired smile.

"Would you have believed me?"

Victor had no answer.

Deep down, he knew he wouldn't have.

For years, he had accepted the stories he had been told.

His grandfather had been a respected businessman.

A generous philanthropist.

A family man.

Everything now felt like a carefully constructed lie.

The Archivist opened another leather-bound volume.

Its pages contained hundreds of photographs, newspaper clippings, and handwritten notes.

He stopped at one page.

A newspaper dated May 17, 1986.

The headline read:

Industrialist William Hale Dies in Private Plane Crash

Victor stared at it.

"I remember this."

The Archivist nodded.

"So does the rest of the country."

He turned the page.

Behind the newspaper clipping was another photograph.

The same aircraft.

Completely intact.

Parked inside a private hangar two days after the supposed crash.

Victor frowned.

"That's impossible."

"No," the Archivist replied.

"It was expensive."

Meanwhile...

Rebecca Monroe's team was still examining the abandoned underground archive beneath the monastery.

An evidence technician approached carrying an old metal box.

"We found this behind a collapsed wall."

Rebecca opened it carefully.

Inside was a stack of index cards.

Each one listed a person's name.

Address.

Occupation.

And one handwritten score ranging from one to ten.

Damian picked one up.

"What are these numbers?"

Harold Pierce looked horrified.

"They're not scores."

"What are they?"

He swallowed.

"They're loyalty ratings."

The room fell silent.

Harold continued.

"The Circle evaluated everyone they encountered."

"Politicians."

"Judges."

"Business leaders."

"Even ordinary citizens."

Rebecca frowned.

"Why?"

Harold answered quietly.

"To determine who could be controlled."

Evelyn carefully searched through the remaining cards.

Then she froze.

One card bore her own name.

Evelyn Carter

Below it, a single handwritten note read:

Integrity: Uncompromising

Recruitment Probability: 2%

Threat Assessment: Extreme

At the bottom of the card, someone had written in red ink:

Never underestimate her.

Evelyn stared at the handwriting.

She recognized it.

She had seen it before.

On old meeting notes.

On anonymous warning letters.

On the message hidden inside Victor's phone.

The same person had been watching her for decades.

Far away, inside the hidden library...

The Archivist reached for a locked drawer.

From it, he removed a faded family photograph.

Victor's hands trembled.

The picture showed William Hale standing beside a young boy.

The boy was no older than eight.

It wasn't Victor.

"Who is that?" he whispered.

The Archivist answered without hesitation.

"Your father."

Victor frowned.

"My father?"

"The man you knew wasn't your biological father."

The room fell silent.

Lucas stared at the Archivist.

"Are you certain?"

The old man nodded.

"I verified it years ago."

Victor backed away from the table.

"No."

"My parents..."

"They adopted you."

Victor felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"Then..."

"My real parents..."

The Archivist looked into his eyes.

"Were murdered."

Before Victor could speak again...

The hidden library shook violently.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Lucas immediately drew his pistol.

"What was that?"

The Archivist's expression darkened.

"They're here."

Another explosion echoed through the tunnels.

Books fell from the shelves.

Ancient lights flickered.

Victor looked toward the entrance.

"How did they find us?"

No one answered.

Then Lucas noticed something.

A faint red light blinking beneath Victor's right boot.

His face went pale.

"Don't move."

Victor looked down.

"What?"

Lucas knelt beside him.

Hidden beneath the sole was a tiny magnetic tracking device.

Victor closed his eyes.

"I led them here."

The Archivist placed a steady hand on his shoulder.

"No."

"They wanted you to."

Outside the library...

A steel blast door buckled inward under the force of another explosion.

Masked operatives flooded the outer tunnel.

Disciplined.

Silent.

Efficient.

Their leader removed his helmet.

It was the man with the silver raven ring.

He smiled as he looked toward the sealed library.

"After forty years..."

He whispered.

"...I finally found you."

Back beneath the monastery...

Rebecca's phone suddenly vibrated.

An encrypted emergency signal flashed across the screen.

SOURCE LOCATED

Attached was a GPS coordinate.

Harold studied the map.

His eyes widened.

"I know this place."

Damian looked over.

"What is it?"

Harold took a slow breath.

"The Archivist's last sanctuary."

Rebecca didn't hesitate.

"Move out."

As agents raced toward their vehicles, Evelyn looked once more at the card bearing her name.

Her gaze settled on the final handwritten sentence.

She will lead us to the truth.

A chill ran through her.

For the first time, she wondered if every decision she had ever made...

Had been anticipated long before she was old enough to understand it.

And hundreds of miles away, the first bullets shattered the silence outside the hidden library.

The siege had begun.

May you like

No one inside knew whether they were about to witness the fall of the Raven Circle...

Or the beginning of an even greater war.
