Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Files

Rain hammered against the ballroom's towering windows as Victor Hale disappeared into the flashing lights outside.
No one moved.
The guests remained frozen, trying to process what they had just witnessed.
An empire had fallen in less than an hour.
But Evelyn Carter wasn't celebrating.
She watched the evidence bag containing Victor's phone disappear into the investigators' vehicle.
Something didn't feel right.
Damian noticed.
"What is it?"
Evelyn took a slow breath.
"Victor lies."
Damian nodded.
"About almost everything."
She looked toward the parking lot.
"Not about fear."
His expression hardened.
"You think he's protecting someone."
"I know he is."
An hour later, the ballroom was nearly empty.
Investigators carried out boxes of financial records while forensic technicians photographed every office, computer, and document connected to the gala.
Inside a temporary command center, Special Agent Rebecca Monroe carefully unlocked Victor's phone.
A progress bar slowly crept across the screen.
Everyone waited.
Finally, the device opened.
"There it is," she whispered.
Thousands of emails.
Encrypted messages.
Private ledgers.
Offshore banking records.
Dozens of hidden folders.
The investigation team immediately began copying everything.
For nearly forty minutes, no one spoke.
Then one analyst suddenly leaned forward.
"Agent Monroe..."
She walked over.
"What did you find?"
He pointed to an encrypted directory unlike the others.
Its name contained only two letters.
A.S.
"There are no financial records inside," the analyst said.
"No contracts."
"No payments."
"Only photographs."
Rebecca frowned.
"Open them."
The first image appeared.
Victor shaking hands with a senator.
Nothing surprising.
The second.
Victor meeting foreign investors.
Still ordinary.
The third image froze the room.
Victor stood beside a man whose face had been deliberately blurred.
Only one detail remained visible.
A silver signet ring engraved with the image of a raven.
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
"I've seen that symbol before."
Another investigator looked up immediately.
"The Raven Circle."
The room became silent.
One younger analyst looked confused.
"I've never heard of them."
Rebecca folded her arms.
"Most people haven't."
"They're not supposed to exist."
Across town, Victor sat alone inside an interrogation room.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His confidence had faded.
A detective placed a cup of coffee on the table.
"You should consider cooperating."
Victor smiled faintly.
"You think you've won."
The detective remained silent.
Victor leaned back.
"You arrested the wrong man."
At the command center, another encrypted file finally opened.
This time it wasn't photographs.
It was a list.
No explanations.
No addresses.
Only names.
Twenty-three of them.
Some belonged to CEOs.
Others were judges.
A media executive.
A former governor.
Even a retired federal prosecutor.
Damian stared at the screen.
"This can't be real."
Rebecca answered quietly.
"I hope it isn't."
Evelyn looked closer.
Every name had one thing in common.
Each person had publicly supported Victor's charities or business ventures.
Yet one name made her heart stop.
Charles Whitmore.
The same mentor who had denounced Victor less than two hours earlier.
Damian looked at Evelyn.
"He could be another victim."
"Or something else," she replied.
Before anyone could respond, the lights inside the command center flickered.
Every monitor suddenly went black.
The room filled with confused voices.
"What happened?"
"We lost the server!"
"My files are gone!"
Then every screen flashed back to life.
Instead of the investigation database, a single black background appeared.
In the center was a silver raven.
Beneath it, white letters slowly appeared.
YOU OPENED THE WRONG FILE.
A cold silence swept through the room.
Then another sentence appeared.
DELETE EVERYTHING.
No one moved.
The final message appeared one word at a time.
OR THE NEXT FUNERAL WILL BE YOURS.
The monitors instantly shut off.
Every computer in the room died.
Emergency lights switched on, bathing the command center in a dim red glow.
Rebecca immediately grabbed her radio.
"Disconnect every system from the network!"
Technicians rushed to unplug servers.
One analyst's face turned pale.
"They were inside our system."
"How long?" Rebecca demanded.
He swallowed hard.
"I... I don't know."
Damian looked toward Evelyn.
"This wasn't Victor."
She slowly nodded.
"No."
She stared at the dark monitors.
"Victor was never at the top."
Across the city, inside a penthouse hidden above the skyline, a man watched multiple security feeds on a wall of screens.
His face remained hidden in the shadows.
One of his assistants entered quietly.
"They accessed the A.S. files."
The man said nothing.
The assistant hesitated.
"Should we activate the cleanup team?"
The stranger slowly rotated the silver raven ring on his finger.
"No."
His calm voice sent chills through the room.
"I want to know who Evelyn Carter really is."
The assistant lowered his head.
"And Victor Hale?"
The man smiled.
"For years he believed he was my partner."
He looked out over the city lights.
"He never understood."
"He was only my employee."
Far below, police sirens echoed through the streets as the investigation expanded into something far larger than anyone had imagined.
Victor Hale's downfall had exposed more than corruption.
It had uncovered the first crack in a hidden organization that had operated in the shadows for decades.
May you like
And somewhere within that organization...
Someone had just declared war on Evelyn Carter.
