Chapter 13: The Seventh Founder

The corridor fell into a suffocating silence.
Adrian Wolfe stood at one end, flanked by a dozen masked operatives.
Rebecca Monroe's tactical team held the opposite side.
Between them stood Victor Hale, Lucas Bennett, Evelyn Carter, Damian Cross, Harold Pierce—and the steel box that contained forty years of secrets.
No one fired.
Not yet.
Adrian smiled.
"I've waited a long time for this meeting."
Victor stepped forward.
"You murdered my family."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"I inherited it."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"There's a difference."
"There isn't."
Behind the damaged portraits, the hidden mechanism continued to click.
A narrow seam appeared in the stone wall.
Evelyn noticed it first.
She glanced toward Harold.
He gave the slightest nod.
He had seen it too.
But neither of them spoke.
If Adrian realized another passage had opened, their only chance would disappear.
Adrian slowly removed his bloodstained jacket.
"You've all spent years chasing ghosts."
He looked directly at Evelyn.
"You especially."
She met his gaze without flinching.
"You've been hiding from the truth."
Adrian laughed softly.
"No."
"I've been protecting it."
He raised a hand.
One of his operatives stepped forward carrying a leather-bound folder.
Adrian tossed it onto the floor.
It slid to Evelyn's feet.
"Go ahead."
"Read it."
Rebecca immediately objected.
"It could be a trap."
The Archivist's voice echoed from somewhere behind the corridor.
"Everything he does is a trap."
Everyone turned.
The old man emerged from the shadows, leaning slightly against the wall.
Blood stained one sleeve, but his eyes remained steady.
He wasn't carrying a weapon.
Only another old journal.
Adrian smiled.
"I was wondering when you'd arrive."
Evelyn slowly opened the folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Her own.
She frowned.
Something was wrong.
The names listed under Father and Mother had been blacked out decades earlier.
But beneath the document lay another sheet.
An original copy.
Untouched.
Rebecca leaned closer.
Victor stared.
Lucas stopped breathing.
The father's name read:
Daniel Carter
Not the Archivist.
Evelyn looked up in confusion.
"What...?"
The Archivist smiled sadly.
"I told you the man who raised you was your father."
He paused.
"I never said I was your biological one."
Silence crashed over the corridor.
Adrian's grin widened.
"You see?"
He spread his hands.
"Even now..."
"...he only tells half the truth."
The Archivist closed his eyes for a moment.
"Daniel Carter was my younger brother."
Evelyn's heart pounded.
"He and his wife were murdered because of me."
His voice broke for the first time.
"When they died..."
"I became the only family you had left."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"So..."
"You're my..."
The old man nodded gently.
"Your uncle."
The realization hit her like a wave.
The man who had watched over her for decades...
The man whose letter she had just read...
Had never claimed to be her father.
He had simply let her believe what she needed in order to survive.
Adrian clapped slowly.
"A touching reunion."
His expression hardened.
"Unfortunately..."
"It changes nothing."
He turned toward Victor.
"Hand me the steel box."
Victor didn't move.
"No."
Adrian sighed.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He snapped his fingers.
Two operatives dragged an elderly prisoner into the corridor.
Harold gasped.
"My God..."
It was William Hale.
Older.
Frailer.
But unmistakably alive.
Victor felt the world spin.
His grandfather's hair had turned completely white.
His hands trembled.
But his eyes remained as cold as ever.
Victor whispered,
"You've been alive..."
William looked at him without emotion.
"Of course."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I let everyone believe it."
Victor's voice shook with rage.
"You used me."
William answered calmly.
"You were useful."
Every word cut deeper than the last.
Victor had spent his entire life trying to earn the approval of a man who had never intended to love him.
Only to control him.
Lucas stepped beside Victor.
"Now you know."
Victor nodded slowly.
"Yes."
His shoulders straightened.
"And now he knows me."
He looked directly at William.
"I'm done being your legacy."
A faint grinding sound echoed behind the portraits.
The hidden doorway had opened completely.
Only Harold noticed.
He quietly moved closer to Evelyn.
Without looking at her, he whispered,
"When I say run..."
She gave the smallest nod.
Adrian pointed his pistol at Victor.
"Last chance."
"The box."
Victor looked at the steel case.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at the Archivist.
Finally, he smiled.
It was the first genuine smile anyone had ever seen from him.
"You spent your whole life teaching me that power belonged to whoever controlled the truth."
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
Victor slowly raised the steel box.
For one terrifying second...
Everyone thought he was surrendering it.
Instead...
He slammed it onto the marble floor.
The impact triggered a hidden safety latch.
The case sprang open.
Hundreds of documents burst into the air.
Photographs.
Financial ledgers.
Confessions.
Original signatures.
Secret treaties.
They scattered through the corridor like a storm of paper.
Adrian's face went pale.
"No!"
His operatives instinctively lunged to gather the documents.
Rebecca shouted,
"Federal agents!"
"Secure every page!"
The corridor exploded into chaos.
Gunfire erupted.
People dove for cover.
Pages drifted through the air like snow, carrying the evidence that could destroy the Raven Circle forever.
At that exact moment, Harold grabbed Evelyn's arm.
"Now!"
He pulled her through the hidden doorway behind the portraits.
The Archivist followed.
Lucas covered their escape.
Victor fired one last shot before disappearing after them.
The stone passage slammed shut just as bullets tore through the corridor.
On the other side, everyone leaned against the cold stone walls, breathing hard.
The hidden passage was narrow and dark.
Only a single lantern burned in the distance.
The Archivist looked at Evelyn.
"We've reached the final chamber."
She frowned.
"What's in there?"
The old man looked ahead with an expression she had never seen before.
"A truth..."
He said quietly,
"...that even Adrian Wolfe has never discovered."
Behind them, muffled explosions shook the walls as the battle for the scattered evidence raged on.
Ahead, the ancient passage curved into darkness.
May you like
And somewhere beyond it...
Waited the final secret of the Hale family.
