Chapter 5: Project Nightfall

No one spoke as the video file loaded.
The room was sealed.
Every wireless signal had been blocked.
The forensic computer remained completely isolated from every network.
Rebecca Monroe looked around the room.
"If this file contains what I think it does, nobody records it. Nobody copies it. We watch it once."
Everyone nodded.
The screen flickered.
Static filled the speakers.
Then the image cleared.
The recording was old, grainy, and timestamped:
October 14, 2003
A conference room came into view.
Five people sat around a polished oak table.
Their faces were hidden in shadow, but one detail stood out.
Each wore the same silver raven ring.
A man's voice broke the silence.
"Project Nightfall is officially approved."
Another voice responded.
"Funding has been secured."
"The media?"
"Controlled."
"The courts?"
"Influenced."
"The corporations?"
"Already cooperating."
Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine.
This wasn't a business meeting.
It sounded like the blueprint for something much bigger.
The first speaker continued.
"Remember our objective."
"We do not chase power."
"We decide who receives it."
The video briefly distorted.
When the picture returned, one of the figures placed a thick folder onto the table.
Across the front, in bold black letters, were two words.
EVELYN CARTER
Her breath caught.
Damian immediately turned toward her.
"You've never seen this before?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
The man opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
School records.
Medical reports.
Family pictures.
Every stage of Evelyn's life had been documented.
Beginning when she was just six years old.
"Subject shows exceptional pattern recognition," one voice said.
"High emotional resilience," another added.
"Strong moral judgment."
A third speaker asked quietly,
"Recruit or eliminate?"
The room fell silent.
Finally, the first voice answered.
"Continue observation."
"If she becomes useful..."
He paused.
"...bring her into the Circle."
"And if she refuses?"
The answer came without hesitation.
"Then she never becomes a threat."
The video ended abruptly.
The screen went black.
For several long seconds, no one moved.
Rebecca finally whispered,
"They've been watching you since you were a child."
Evelyn couldn't answer.
She couldn't.
Her entire life suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every achievement.
Every career move.
Every coincidence.
Had any of it truly been chance?
Or had someone quietly been guiding events from the shadows?
Damian gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
"We'll figure this out."
Before she could respond, another technician called out.
"There's more."
The memory chip contained a hidden partition.
Rebecca authorized its decryption.
This time, it wasn't a video.
It was a database.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Each one labeled with a person's name.
Politicians.
Judges.
Journalists.
Military officers.
Corporate executives.
Some names were crossed out.
Others were highlighted in red.
Beside each file appeared one of three labels.
ACTIVE
RETIRED
DECEASED
Damian frowned.
"This is a personnel database."
Rebecca looked horrified.
"No."
"It's a recruitment database."
One file immediately caught Evelyn's attention.
Victor Hale.
Status:
TERMINATED
She looked up.
"They already considered him dead."
Rebecca nodded slowly.
"Which means..."
Victor wasn't expected to survive.
As if on cue, Rebecca's secure phone rang.
She answered immediately.
After listening for several seconds, she slowly lowered it.
"They've confirmed it."
The room fell silent.
"Victor Hale is dead."
Damian's jaw tightened.
"How?"
Rebecca looked down.
"Officially?"
She swallowed.
"Cardiac arrest."
Nobody in the room believed it.
Not for a second.
The Raven Circle had erased one of its own.
Across the city...
A black funeral van quietly left the medical examiner's office.
There was no police escort.
No media attention.
Only rain falling steadily onto the empty streets.
Inside the vehicle, Victor Hale's body lay beneath a white sheet.
The driver glanced into the rearview mirror.
Everything appeared normal.
Then...
A hand slowly emerged from beneath the sheet.
The driver's eyes widened.
He slammed on the brakes.
The van skidded across the wet pavement.
Victor suddenly sat upright, gasping for air.
"What...?"
He looked around in confusion.
"I'm alive..."
The driver reached for his radio.
Before he could speak...
A thin steel wire wrapped around his throat from behind.
His eyes bulged.
Within seconds, he collapsed across the steering wheel.
The van rolled to a stop.
The rear doors opened.
A woman wearing a black coat stepped inside.
She looked directly at Victor.
"You've always been difficult to bury."
Victor stared at her in disbelief.
"I know you..."
She smiled faintly.
"You should."
"I recruited you."
His face drained of color.
"You told them I was dead."
"I did."
"Why?"
She leaned closer.
"Because dead men stop asking questions."
Victor struggled to breathe.
"You can't kill me."
The woman shook her head.
"No."
She handed him a small passport.
A stack of cash.
And a burner phone.
"I'm giving you one chance."
Victor looked confused.
"Run."
He frowned.
"From who?"
Her smile disappeared.
"From the people you spent twenty years serving."
Before Victor could ask another question, she stepped back into the rain.
The van doors closed.
The burner phone vibrated.
A single text message appeared.
THEY KNOW YOU SURVIVED.
Victor's hands began to shake.
Then another message arrived.
YOU HAVE SIX HOURS.
Outside, somewhere in the darkness, several headlights slowly appeared.
One...
Then two...
Then five black SUVs turned onto the deserted road.
Victor looked through the windshield as the convoy approached.
For the first time in his life...
The man who had spent decades making others live in fear finally understood what it felt like to be hunted.
And miles away, Evelyn Carter still had no idea that the man she believed was dead had just become the most valuable witness in the country.
If Victor survived the night...
He could expose the Raven Circle from the inside.
May you like
If he didn't...
Project Nightfall might remain buried forever.
