Chapter 5: The Memory Card

Chapter 5: The Memory Card

No one moved.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the tiny memory card resting inside Emily's pendant.

It was no larger than a fingernail.

Yet it suddenly felt heavier than everything else in the room.

Matthew stared at it as though he had seen a ghost.

His lips parted.

Then closed again.

Detective Harris noticed.

"So."

He folded his arms.

"You recognize it."

Matthew forced himself to look away.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Harris smiled faintly.

"Interesting."

"You said she wasn't supposed to find it."

Matthew immediately realized his mistake.

"I..."

"You misheard me."

"No."

"I don't think I did."

One of the forensic technicians stepped forward wearing fresh gloves.

"I'll process it."

I gently closed my hand over the pendant.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"This belonged to my wife."

"I'll hand it over."

"But I'm opening it."

Harris nodded.

"Fair enough."

The technician prepared a clean evidence reader.

The tiny memory card slid into place.

A progress bar appeared on the screen.

Reading Device...

No one spoke.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

After several long seconds...

A list of folders appeared.

There were only three.

Personal

Financial

Insurance

Grace frowned.

"Insurance?"

I didn't answer.

My attention was fixed on the screen.

Harris pointed toward the first folder.

"Let's start there."

The technician clicked.

Inside were dozens of video files.

Each carried nothing more than a date.

Emily had recorded herself over many months.

The earliest file opened automatically.

Emily smiled into the camera.

She looked healthy.

Relaxed.

"Hi."

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I probably worried about nothing."

She laughed softly.

"I hope so."

"I've always been paranoid."

She rolled her eyes.

"Daniel teases me about making backup plans."

A lump formed in my throat.

That sounded exactly like her.

She continued smiling.

"If everything is fine..."

"...please stop watching."

"Seriously."

"Go kiss your husband."

"Play with Noah."

"Delete these."

The recording ended.

Grace quietly wiped away a tear.

"She never stopped thinking about you."

I couldn't speak.

The second recording began.

Emily looked different.

Less rested.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

"I've started noticing something strange."

She glanced toward the closed door behind her.

"I think someone is following me."

Detective Harris leaned closer.

Emily continued.

"I've seen the same black SUV three times this week."

"Maybe it's nothing."

"But if it isn't..."

"I want a record."

She calmly listed dates.

Locations.

License plate numbers.

Everything.

Always organized.

Always careful.

The recording ended.

Harris immediately turned toward one of the officers.

"Run every plate she mentioned."

The officer nodded and hurried out.

The next recording loaded.

Emily looked frightened.

She locked the door before speaking.

"I confronted Matthew today."

Every eye shifted toward my brother.

Emily continued.

"He denied everything."

"But he knew details I never shared."

She inhaled slowly.

"I think someone inside the family has been watching me."

Matthew remained silent.

His face showed nothing.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Nothing at all.

The fourth recording began.

Emily was crying.

"I found financial transfers."

"They're using nonprofit foundations."

"The money disappears overseas."

"I copied everything."

"If anything happens to me..."

"...please don't let Noah grow up around these people."

Grace lowered her head.

The room felt unbearably heavy.

I reached for the desk to steady myself.

Emily's voice continued.

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

She hesitated.

"Actually..."

"I do."

A faint smile appeared on her face.

"Grace."

Grace covered her mouth.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this with Daniel..."

"...thank you."

"You kept your promise."

Grace burst into tears.

"I'm sorry."

She whispered through sobs.

"I couldn't save you."

I wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"You protected Noah."

"That's what Emily wanted."

Grace nodded silently.

The technician clicked the final personal recording.

Emily looked exhausted.

Her hair was pulled back.

She wore the same sweater she had worn two days before the accident.

"I don't think I have much time."

My heart stopped.

Emily continued speaking calmly.

"If I'm wrong..."

"...I'll look ridiculous."

"But if I'm right..."

"...Daniel needs to hear this."

She looked straight into the camera.

"I don't think my death will be an accident."

The room became completely silent.

Even Matthew stopped breathing.

Emily continued.

"If something happens to me..."

"...don't let anyone convince you I was careless."

"I know how to drive."

"I know this road."

"I know my car."

She slowly held up several papers.

"I found evidence that someone paid to alter maintenance records."

Detective Harris looked sharply at the screen.

Emily continued.

"I haven't taken them to the police yet."

"I wanted one more piece of proof."

She looked down briefly.

"That was probably a mistake."

The recording ended.

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Finally...

Detective Harris broke the silence.

"We're reopening the death investigation."

A young detective looked stunned.

"But sir..."

"The case was ruled accidental."

"It was."

Harris nodded.

"Now it isn't."

He looked toward me.

"Daniel."

"Do you remember who serviced Emily's vehicle before the crash?"

I searched my memory.

Then it hit me.

"Carter Automotive."

Harris frowned.

"Your family's company?"

"It used to be."

I looked toward Matthew.

"He sold it five years ago."

Matthew answered immediately.

"That's right."

"But I still know the owner."

The detective smiled.

"Excellent."

"Then he'll probably recognize you."

Matthew said nothing.

Another officer hurried into the room carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

"Detective."

"The search team found this inside Mr. Matthew Carter's guest bedroom."

I frowned.

"My brother has a bedroom here."

"He stays overnight sometimes."

The officer handed the envelope to Harris.

Inside was a folded repair invoice.

Harris opened it carefully.

His expression darkened.

"What is it?"

He handed the paper to me.

The invoice listed Emily's SUV.

The service date.

The mechanic's signature.

Then one handwritten instruction near the bottom.

Replace brake line after inspection. Delay customer notification.

Below that...

Another handwritten note.

Approved — M.C.

My hands began to shake.

Matthew spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"I've never seen that document."

Harris looked unimpressed.

"You've said that several times today."

"I mean it."

"Good."

"We'll let handwriting experts decide."

Matthew suddenly stepped forward.

"This is insane."

"You actually think I killed Emily?"

His voice echoed through the study.

No one answered.

He laughed bitterly.

"You've all decided I'm guilty."

Grace looked him straight in the eye.

"No."

"We decided you were lying."

Matthew slammed both hands onto the desk.

"I loved Emily!"

The words exploded through the room.

Everyone froze.

Including me.

He immediately realized what he had just admitted.

His face lost all color.

The silence became unbearable.

I stared at my own brother.

"What did you just say?"

Matthew slowly backed away.

"I..."

"I meant..."

"You loved your sister-in-law?"

I asked quietly.

He couldn't answer.

Grace looked horrified.

Detective Harris slowly closed his notebook.

"I think..."

"...we've just discovered this story is much bigger than financial fraud."

Before anyone could speak again...

The forensic technician gasped.

"Detective."

Harris turned.

"What now?"

The technician pointed at the computer screen.

"I didn't notice another folder."

Everyone looked.

A hidden directory had just appeared after the memory card finished decrypting.

Its name contained only two words.

OPEN LAST.

Beneath the folder title...

May you like

Emily had left one final message.

If you're seeing this, it means someone I trusted betrayed me.
