Chapter 4: Emily’s Secret Before the Wedding

Chapter 4: Emily’s Secret Before the Wedding

The room fell into absolute silence.

No one spoke.

No one even seemed to breathe.

Matthew's words hung in the air like smoke.

"Emily knew exactly who I was... long before she married you."

I stared at my brother.

"You’re lying."

Matthew tilted his head.

"Am I?"

Grace looked just as stunned as I was.

"That's impossible."

"Emily never mentioned knowing you before college."

Matthew smiled.

"Because that's the story she wanted everyone to believe."

Detective Harris remained perfectly calm.

"Explain."

Matthew folded his hands in front of him.

"For once..."

"...I'd like to."

I could barely recognize the man standing in front of me.

This wasn't the brother I had grown up with.

His voice was colder.

Sharper.

Almost relieved.

Like someone who had spent years wearing a mask.

"You always believed you met Emily first."

He laughed quietly.

"You didn't."

My heart pounded.

"I introduced you."

"I remember."

"You remember the party."

Matthew nodded.

"But you don't remember what happened six months earlier."

"I had already met her."

Grace frowned.

"Where?"

"At my father's charity foundation."

He looked at me.

"Emily was an intern."

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

Matthew continued.

"She was brilliant."

"The smartest person in the room."

"She uncovered accounting discrepancies during her second week."

Detective Harris looked interested.

"What kind of discrepancies?"

Matthew smiled.

"The kind that powerful families don't like people finding."

My stomach tightened.

"Our father?"

Matthew nodded.

"He'd been moving money."

"Quietly."

"Legally enough to survive an audit."

"But not legally enough to survive Emily."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Our father trusted you."

"He trusted me because I protected him."

Grace whispered,

"And Emily?"

Matthew looked toward the window.

"Emily wanted to report everything."

The room remained silent.

"I convinced her not to."

"You?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Matthew's smile faded.

"I told her our father was dying."

"I said exposing him would destroy the family."

"And she believed you?"

"For a while."

He looked back at me.

"Emily had a weakness."

"What?"

"She believed people could change."

I felt sick.

That sounded exactly like her.

She always believed in second chances.

Even for people who didn't deserve them.

Detective Harris interrupted.

"So what changed?"

Matthew answered immediately.

"You."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"The day Emily met you..."

"...she stopped trusting me."

He laughed bitterly.

"You ruined everything."

"I didn't even know you."

"No."

"But she fell in love with you."

Grace quietly wiped away a tear.

Matthew continued.

"She resigned from the foundation."

"She refused to sign confidentiality agreements."

"She walked away."

I couldn't understand.

"If that's true..."

"...why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you would've married her anyway."

"I loved her."

"I know."

His answer came almost instantly.

"And that was the problem."

Another uncomfortable silence settled over the room.

Detective Harris slowly flipped open his notebook.

"You expected Emily to stay quiet forever."

Matthew nodded.

"She almost did."

"Almost?"

"Then Dad died."

I looked at him.

"Our father died ten years ago."

"Exactly."

"The only person Emily feared was gone."

Grace whispered,

"So she started investigating again."

Matthew looked at her.

"Congratulations."

"You finally caught up."

I clenched my fists.

"What exactly did Emily find?"

Matthew smiled again.

"The wrong people."

"What does that mean?"

"It means she found records."

"Old transfers."

"Fake charities."

"Shell companies."

He paused.

"And names."

My pulse quickened.

"What names?"

Matthew looked directly at me.

"Mine."

The word hit me harder than I expected.

"You stole from the family."

"No."

"I built something."

"With family money."

"You mean you embezzled it."

"I prefer invested."

Detective Harris quietly wrote another note.

Matthew noticed.

"You'll never prove it."

"We'll see."

Matthew laughed again.

"You've only scratched the surface."

Grace suddenly stepped forward.

"There was more than money."

Matthew looked at her.

"What?"

"You hated Daniel."

He smiled.

"I never hated him."

"You envied him."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Grace continued.

"Daniel inherited the company."

"You inherited resentment."

I looked between them.

"What is she talking about?"

Matthew didn't answer.

Grace did.

"Emily told me something three months before she died."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

"She said your father changed his will."

My heartbeat accelerated.

"Why?"

Grace slowly looked at Matthew.

"Because he caught someone stealing."

Matthew's jaw tightened.

Grace continued.

"The company was supposed to be divided equally."

I frowned.

"It was."

She shook her head.

"No."

"It wasn't."

"The original will gave Matthew control."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

Grace nodded.

"Emily found an older copy."

"After your father discovered missing funds..."

"...he rewrote everything."

I looked at Matthew.

"Is that true?"

He didn't answer.

"Matthew."

Silence.

"Answer me."

Finally...

He spoke.

"I spent twenty years building that company."

His voice trembled.

"Our father handed it to you."

"You never even asked for it."

"I earned it."

I stared at him.

"No."

"You inherited it."

His eyes burned with anger.

"You inherited everything."

"The business."

"The respect."

"The perfect wife."

"The perfect son."

"You had the life that should've been mine."

The room fell silent again.

For years...

I had believed my brother loved me.

Protected me.

Supported me.

Now I realized he had spent those same years comparing our lives.

Measuring every success.

Counting every loss.

Detective Harris calmly folded his notebook.

"So this wasn't just about Noah's trust."

Matthew slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This started long before Noah was born."

"It started the day our father chose Daniel."

The detective nodded thoughtfully.

"And Victoria?"

Matthew smiled.

"Victoria was simply the next move."

Before anyone could ask another question...

A forensic technician rushed into the study carrying a small evidence box.

"Detective Harris!"

Harris turned.

"What did you find?"

The technician carefully opened the box.

Inside was an old gold necklace.

A delicate heart-shaped pendant.

The moment Grace saw it...

She gasped.

"Oh my God..."

I recognized it instantly.

It belonged to Emily.

I had searched for it after her funeral.

It had disappeared without a trace.

I slowly picked it up.

The clasp was broken.

Something rattled inside the pendant.

Grace's eyes widened.

"It opens."

Carefully, I pressed the tiny hidden latch.

The heart-shaped pendant clicked open.

Instead of a photograph...

There was a miniature memory card tucked inside.

Detective Harris looked at the technician.

"Has anyone viewed it?"

"No, sir."

He looked at me.

"I think your wife left us one more message."

The room became silent once again.

Matthew's confidence disappeared for the first time all afternoon.

His eyes locked onto the tiny memory card.

And for the first time...

May you like

He whispered words no one expected to hear.

"She wasn't supposed to find that."
