Chapter 11: Emily’s Impossible Bargain

Chapter 11: Emily’s Impossible Bargain

The room went completely silent.

No one spoke.

No one even blinked.

Every eye remained locked on the enormous monitor.

Emily sat calmly across from William Hawthorne.

She wasn't restrained.

She wasn't frightened.

She had walked into that meeting willingly.

I felt my knees weaken.

"No..."

I whispered.

"Emily..."

The recording continued.

William folded his hands on the polished wooden table.

"You understand the consequences."

Emily nodded.

"I do."

"If you cooperate..."

"...your family walks away."

"And if I don't?"

William's smile disappeared.

"They become part of the investigation."

Emily looked down for several seconds.

When she looked back up, her expression had changed.

She wasn't scared anymore.

She looked determined.

"I'll never help you hurt them."

William leaned back in his chair.

"I'm not asking you to hurt them."

"I'm asking you to save them."

Detective Harris paused the video.

He looked toward me.

"This meeting changes the timeline."

I couldn't take my eyes off Emily.

"I don't understand."

Grace stepped beside me.

"Keep watching."

The recording resumed.

William slowly slid a thick folder across the table.

Emily didn't touch it.

"What is it?"

"Our insurance."

She frowned.

"Against who?"

"You."

William smiled faintly.

"If you expose us..."

"...these documents disappear."

Emily remained silent.

He continued.

"If you cooperate..."

"...they stay locked away forever."

Emily finally reached for the folder.

Inside were photographs.

She looked at the first one.

Her face immediately lost color.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Her hands began to tremble.

I couldn't see the photographs.

The camera only captured Emily's reaction.

William watched quietly.

"Now you understand."

Emily whispered something too softly for the microphone.

William answered.

"Yes."

"We've been watching Noah."

Grace gasped.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Emily slowly closed the folder.

Tears filled her eyes.

"You promised children were off limits."

William sighed.

"I made many promises."

Emily stood.

"You monster."

William remained seated.

"I've been called worse."

She pushed the folder back toward him.

"I'll never work for you."

William nodded.

"I expected that answer."

Emily turned toward the door.

William spoke one final sentence.

"If you leave this room..."

"...you'll have exactly seventy-two hours."

Emily stopped walking.

She didn't turn around.

William continued.

"After that..."

"...I can no longer guarantee your family's safety."

The recording ended.

Silence settled over the underground command center.

I couldn't breathe.

Grace quietly wiped away tears.

"She carried that burden alone."

Detective Harris looked troubled.

"This wasn't blackmail."

"It was coercion."

Matthew nodded.

"He always gave people impossible choices."

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

He looked down.

"I knew he met with her."

"But I never knew what he said."

I clenched my fists.

"You still said nothing."

"I was trying to find another way."

"There wasn't one."

His voice broke.

"I realized that too late."

The technician suddenly pointed at the monitor.

"Wait."

Another file loaded automatically.

The title read:

Meeting Transcript – Audio Enhanced

The software had cleaned the original recording.

Voices became crystal clear.

William's words echoed through the room.

"Emily."

"Before you answer..."

"...there's something else you should know."

Emily remained silent.

William continued.

"Daniel has already been selected."

I frowned.

"Selected?"

Emily asked the same question.

"What do you mean?"

William calmly opened another folder.

"He'll become chairman within eighteen months."

"Our organization needs someone with his reputation."

Emily stared at him.

"He would never join you."

William smiled.

"He won't know he has."

The room fell silent again.

Detective Harris slowly looked around.

"This wasn't just financial crime."

"They were infiltrating legitimate businesses."

Matthew nodded.

"That's how William operated."

"He never stole successful companies."

"He quietly absorbed them."

The recording continued.

Emily leaned forward.

"You've already done this before."

William smiled.

"Many times."

"How many?"

"You'd be surprised."

Emily looked horrified.

William spoke almost proudly.

"Judges."

"Doctors."

"University presidents."

"Corporate executives."

"Most never realized they were working for us."

Grace whispered,

"He built an invisible empire."

Nobody disagreed.

Emily asked another question.

"What happens if Daniel refuses?"

William's smile faded.

"Eventually..."

"...someone replaces him."

I felt a chill run through my body.

Replace.

Not persuade.

Not convince.

Replace.

Emily understood too.

She slowly stood again.

"You'll kill him."

William never answered.

He didn't have to.

His silence spoke louder than words.

The recording ended once more.

Detective Harris immediately turned to one of the officers.

"I want every copy of this secured."

"Yes, sir."

The officer hurried away.

Matthew quietly walked toward one of the filing cabinets.

"I know what's in these."

Harris looked at him.

"Open it."

Matthew hesitated.

Then pulled open the top drawer.

Hundreds of folders filled the cabinet.

Every folder carried a name.

Business owners.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Television personalities.

Each organized alphabetically.

Grace looked stunned.

"This can't be real."

Matthew removed one folder.

Then another.

Every folder contained surveillance photographs.

Financial records.

Private correspondence.

Medical information.

Divorce filings.

Tax documents.

Anything that could be used as leverage.

William hadn't controlled people with loyalty.

He controlled them with secrets.

The technician suddenly called out.

"Detective."

Harris walked over.

"What is it?"

"I found the server's live connection."

"You mean it's still online?"

"Yes."

"Someone is accessing it remotely."

Matthew's eyes widened.

"He knows we're here."

As if on cue...

Every monitor in the room flickered.

William's face returned.

This time...

He wasn't smiling.

His voice remained calm.

But colder.

"You've gone farther than I expected."

Detective Harris stepped toward the screen.

"It's over."

William slowly shook his head.

"No."

"It isn't."

He reached for something outside the camera's view.

Then looked directly at me.

"Daniel."

"I truly hoped you'd never have to see this."

The screen changed.

A live video feed appeared.

Not from the mansion.

Not from the tunnels.

From somewhere else.

Grace suddenly screamed.

"Oh, no..."

My heart stopped.

The camera showed Noah's upstairs bedroom.

The room was empty.

His dinosaur blanket lay on the floor.

The window was open.

One of the officers assigned to protect him lay unconscious beside the bed.

I couldn't breathe.

"Where's Noah?"

William looked back into the camera.

His expression was completely emotionless.

May you like

"I believe..."

"...your son has just become the most valuable witness in America."
