Chapter 15 - The Mercer File.

Daniel did not call at six.

At 6:05, Nathan opened the storage facility's secure digital copy of the file labeled MERCER.

Marcus, Nathan, Jenna, and Maria gathered in the library.

Eleanor was not invited.

That decision lasted four minutes.

Then she entered anyway.

"If this concerns Harrow, it concerns me."

Marcus almost told her to leave.

Then he remembered Abigail's video.

Do not destroy Eleanor simply because she has betrayed you.

Find out whether she is still choosing the betrayal or trapped inside it.

Marcus pointed to a chair.

"Sit."

Eleanor did.

Nathan opened the file.

The first document was a consulting agreement between Harrow and Eleanor's former company.

Nothing new.

The second was a side letter.

Eleanor stared at it.

"I've never seen that."

Nathan read silently.

Then aloud.

"Upon successful completion of Project Mercer, consultant shall receive a performance payment equal to one-half of one percent of transaction value attributable to Vance Logistics divestiture."

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

"Half a percent."

Nathan calculated quickly.

"At the valuation then, about twenty-two million dollars."

Eleanor's face went white.

"I was never offered twenty-two million dollars."

"Maybe not," Marcus said.

"But someone planned to use your company as the payment channel."

The third document was worse.

A memo from Grant Brennan to Charles Vale.

E.V. has established access.

M.V. is emotionally invested.

A.B. remains primary obstacle.

Recommend patience until succession structure becomes visible.

Eleanor stared at the initials.

"He wrote this before Marcus proposed."

Nathan nodded.

The next page was dated after Abigail's diagnosis became serious.

A.B. health decline accelerating.

M.V. likely to consolidate control after death.

E.V. can influence hiring around finance function if relationship progresses.

Marcus remembered Eleanor praising Grant's intelligence before he was hired.

She had said his perspective would modernize the company.

At the time, it sounded like casual advice.

Now it looked like the hinge of a plan.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"I recommended him."

Marcus said nothing.

"I brought him into your company."

Still Marcus said nothing.

"He told me he wanted out of Halpern."

"He said he admired you."

"He said you needed someone who understood hostile investors."

Marcus finally answered.

"He understood them because he was working with one."

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"I didn't know."

"I believe you didn't know all of it."

The words surprised everyone, including Eleanor.

Marcus continued.

"But you knew enough to know you were hiding things from me."

She lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

Nathan opened another document.

It was an email from Grant to Vale written two days after Leo's birth.

DESCENDANT CLAUSE ACTIVE.

E.V. BELIEVES GUARDIANSHIP CREATES CONTROL PATH.

DO NOT CORRECT HER UNDERSTANDING.

USE ONLY IF ACQUISITION TIMING REQUIRES.

Maria whispered, "He planned this when Leo was two days old."

Marcus felt something close to nausea.

Eleanor read the message again and again.

"Grant told me the trust finally gave me protection."

Nathan looked at her.

"Protection from what?"

Eleanor's shame returned.

"From being left with nothing."

Marcus stared at her.

"You signed a prenup that guarantees you more money than most people earn in ten lifetimes."

"It wasn't the amount."

"Then what?"

Eleanor's voice broke.

"It was knowing every part of my life could disappear because you decided I no longer belonged in it."

Marcus frowned.

"I never threatened that."

"You didn't have to."

"Your mother controlled the trust."

"You controlled the company."

"The estate was yours."

"The staff worked for you."

"Every room reminded me that I was living inside someone else's last name."

Marcus listened.

The explanation did not excuse her.

But it finally made emotional sense.

Eleanor had mistaken control for safety.

Grant had recognized the fear and fed it.

"So you believed getting leverage through Leo would make you equal."

Tears slipped down Eleanor's face.

"I believed it would mean you could never erase me."

Maria looked at her.

"But you scared him."

Eleanor's face crumpled.

Maria did not sound cruel.

That made the sentence harder.

"In the hallway," Maria continued, "you kept saying he was your son."

"But you weren't looking at him."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"You were looking at me."

"At the carrier."

"At the pocket."

"At the papers."

Maria's voice softened.

"He was crying, and nobody mattered except the fight."

Eleanor covered her face.

Marcus looked away.

He had wanted confession.

He had imagined it would feel like victory.

It did not.

Nathan opened the final item in the Mercer file.

A video attachment.

The timestamp was the night before Abigail died.

Grant appeared on screen inside Abigail's study.

The camera angle was low and partially blocked.

Abigail sat behind her desk.

Her voice was weak but steady.

"Charles Vale will lose."

Grant smiled.

"You don't know that."

"I know my son."

"Your son is predictable."

"He loves fiercely and gets angry when betrayed."

"That makes him easy to direct."

Marcus felt his hands tighten.

Grant continued on the recording.

"Eleanor will betray him eventually."

"Then Marcus will destroy the marriage."

"The family will split."

"The board will panic."

"And when they need stability, we will offer it."

Abigail looked at him for a long time.

"You think pain makes people stupid."

"Often, yes."

"Sometimes it makes them honest."

Grant laughed softly.

"You should rest."

Abigail leaned forward.

"You should understand something."

"I changed the trust."

Grant's smile disappeared.

"How?"

"Enough that using the child will not give you what you think."

Grant stepped closer.

"What did you change?"

Abigail smiled.

"Ask Nathan."

The video ended.

Nathan stared at the screen.

"That's why Grant accessed the study."

Marcus nodded.

"He was looking for the amendment."

Eleanor wiped her face.

"And when he couldn't find it, he told me the old version was still valid."

Marcus looked at her.

"He let you believe taking Leo could give you leverage."

"Yes."

"And you chose to use it."

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

The distinction mattered.

Manipulated did not mean innocent.

Marcus needed both truths to remain true.

Nathan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice said something too quiet for Marcus to hear.

Nathan's expression changed.

"Where?"

He listened.

"Is he conscious?"

Marcus stood.

"Daniel?"

Nathan nodded.

He ended the call.

"Daniel was found in his car in a parking garage near the river."

Eleanor stood quickly.

"What happened?"

"He's alive."

Nathan looked at Marcus.

"But his briefcase is gone."

"What was in it?"

Nathan swallowed.

"The original Harrow ownership records."

Marcus looked at the Mercer file on the screen.

Copies were useful.

Originals were stronger.

Someone was still cleaning the trail.

Then Jenna's phone buzzed.

She read the message.

"We have a camera image from the garage."

She turned the screen around.

A man in a baseball cap was walking away from Daniel's car carrying a leather briefcase.

His face was partially visible.

Marcus recognized him from the gardener's cottage passport.

Elliot Reed.

Eleanor stared.

"I thought he was helping us."

Marcus looked at the image.

"Maybe he is."

Nathan frowned.

"By taking evidence?"

Marcus remembered Elliot's repeated warnings.

He had been moving just ahead of everyone for years.

"Or maybe Daniel was never supposed to keep it."

Jenna zoomed the image.

Something white protruded from the side of the briefcase.

An envelope.

On it, written in thick black marker, were two words.

FOR MARCUS.

Eleanor remained in the library after Nathan closed the Mercer file.

The others began gathering documents, but she did not move.

Marcus watched her stare at Grant's memo on the screen.

"You believed him for years," Marcus said.

Eleanor nodded.

"Because believing him made my choices look smarter."

Marcus waited.

"If Grant was just an ambitious friend helping me understand your family, then I wasn't betraying you."

"I was protecting myself."

"If Harrow was legitimate research, then the money wasn't dirty."

"If the trust clause gave me leverage, then preparing custody papers wasn't cruel."

She looked at Marcus.

"Every lie came with a version of the story where I was still the reasonable person."

Marcus felt the sentence land.

"Everyone does that."

"Maybe."

Eleanor wiped her face.

"But some people have enough money to hire professionals who help make the story sound convincing."

Daniel, despite his injuries, smiled from the doorway.

"That is an unfair description of my profession."

Eleanor looked at him.

"Is it inaccurate?"

Daniel considered.

"Not entirely."

Nathan shook his head.

Marcus sat across from Eleanor.

"What happens if the investigation proves Grant planned all of it?"

She looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

"Does that make you innocent?"

Eleanor's eyes lowered.

"No."

"Does it make what happened in the hallway disappear?"

"No."

"Then don't wait for Grant's guilt to decide what you do next."

Eleanor looked at him.

"What do I do next?"

Marcus thought of the custody petition still active.

"Start with the thing only you can undo."

She understood.

"The petition."

"Yes."

Eleanor took a slow breath.

"I need time."

Marcus felt anger flicker.

Then he remembered his promise to stop making every pause look like betrayal.

"Take time."

"But not forever."

May you like

Eleanor nodded.

"Not forever."
