Chapter 11 - Daniel's Hidden File.

Elliot Reed's call lasted less than twenty seconds, but it changed the order of Marcus's priorities.
Until then, the house had been the crisis.
Now the board meeting was.
Nathan immediately called the corporate secretary and moved the meeting from ten in the morning to seven.
He gave no reason beyond an urgent governance matter.
Marcus did not sleep.
At two-thirty, he sat in the library with Eleanor across from him and Daniel standing near the windows.
Maria remained upstairs with Leo.
Jenna controlled access to the floor.
Marcus placed Abigail's video transcript on the desk.
"My mother said you kept a file."
Daniel's expression gave nothing away.
"Your mother said many things."
"She was specific."
"Harrow Consulting."
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
Eleanor's face tightened.
"What file?" she asked.
Marcus watched Daniel.
"That's what I'm asking."
Daniel walked to the drinks cabinet, then stopped himself before pouring anything.
"Abigail hired me to identify who funded Harrow."
"I did."
Nathan had entered behind Marcus.
"Who was it?"
Daniel looked at him.
"You already know the answer."
"Charles Vale," Marcus said.
Daniel nodded.
Eleanor stood abruptly.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"That's not possible."
Marcus's voice stayed calm.
"Why?"
"Because Harrow's managing partner was Julian Mercer."
Daniel gave her a tired look.
"Julian Mercer was a nominee."
"For Vale?"
"For a trust controlled by Vale's private office."
Eleanor stared at him.
"You told me the money came from investors who wanted independent branding research."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"I never told you that."
"Grant did."
The answer came before she could stop it.
Marcus leaned back.
"So Grant knew."
Eleanor looked at the floor.
"He said Harrow represented a group evaluating luxury acquisitions."
"He said they wanted research into family-controlled companies and brand succession."
Marcus felt anger rise.
"And Vance Global was one of those companies."
"Yes."
"Did you give them information about us?"
Eleanor looked up.
"Public information."
"At first."
Marcus heard the last two words.
"At first."
Eleanor closed her eyes briefly.
"Later they asked about you."
"Your schedule."
"Who you trusted."
"Whether you planned to marry."
"Whether your mother still controlled family decisions."
Nathan stared at her.
"And you answered?"
"Some of it."
"Before you met Marcus?"
"Yes."
Marcus felt something inside him go cold.
He had suspected it after reading the notebook.
Hearing her admit it was different.
"Was meeting me part of the assignment?"
Eleanor looked at him for a long time.
"I was asked to attend events where you would be."
"That isn't what I asked."
Her eyes filled.
"The first meeting was planned."
Marcus said nothing.
The museum fundraiser returned to him with cruel clarity.
The spilled champagne.
The joke about the sculpture.
The way she had seemed surprised when he introduced himself.
All of it had been arranged.
"Everything after that?"
Eleanor shook her head quickly.
"No."
"Marcus, no."
"I took the assignment because I needed the money."
"I thought it was corporate research."
"Then I met you."
"And I stopped sending Grant anything personal."
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Did my mother believe that?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Eventually."
Eleanor turned toward him.
"Eventually?"
Daniel reached into his inner jacket pocket and removed a key.
"The file Abigail wanted is not in my office."
Nathan narrowed his eyes.
"Where is it?"
"A private storage box in Manhattan."
Marcus stood.
"We're going now."
Daniel shook his head.
"The building opens at six."
"Then we will be there at six."
Eleanor stepped forward.
"I'm coming."
Marcus looked at her.
"No."
"It concerns me."
"Exactly."
"Marcus."
"You stay with Leo."
Her expression changed.
"You just told me I can't be alone with him."
Marcus held her gaze.
"You won't be."
"Maria will be there."
Eleanor gave a bitter laugh.
"Of course."
Marcus moved closer.
"You want to know why I trust her tonight?"
"Because when you thought nobody was watching, you tried to overpower her."
"When she thought nobody was watching, she protected our son."
Eleanor looked wounded.
"You think one moment defines us?"
"No."
Marcus's answer was immediate.
"I think choices define us."
"And tonight we are all living with ours."
At five-forty, Marcus, Nathan, Daniel, and Jenna left the estate in one vehicle.
The rain had stopped.
Manhattan was still dark when they arrived at the private records facility on East Forty-Seventh Street.
Daniel signed them in.
The storage box was smaller than Marcus expected.
Inside were three folders and an encrypted drive.
The first folder contained Harrow's incorporation documents.
The second contained invoices from Eleanor's consulting firm.
The third was labeled VANCE - CONTACT CHAIN.
Marcus opened it.
On the first page was a diagram.
Charles Vale at the top.
Below him, three entities.
Holloway Strategic Partners.
Harrow Consulting.
A private intelligence company called Northline Advisory.
Grant Brennan's name connected Holloway to Harrow.
Eleanor's name connected Harrow to Marcus.
Daniel's name connected Abigail's investigation to Northline.
Then Marcus saw another line.
From Northline to Elliot Reed.
Nathan read over his shoulder.
"Elliot worked for Northline."
Daniel nodded.
"Before Abigail hired him privately."
"Who owned Northline?"
Daniel opened the encrypted drive on an offline tablet he had brought.
A corporate registration appeared.
Northline Advisory was owned by a Delaware holding company.
The beneficial owner listed in the confidential attachment was not Charles Vale.
It was Grant Brennan.
Marcus stared.
"Grant owned the investigator my mother hired."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not when she hired Elliot."
"Grant acquired Northline through a shell company nine months later."
Nathan understood first.
"After Elliot began investigating him."
"Exactly."
Marcus felt the elegance of the trap.
Grant had effectively purchased the company employing the man investigating Grant.
"Did Elliot know?"
"Eventually."
Daniel opened another file.
It was an email from Elliot to Abigail.
I HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE NORTHLINE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED.
DO NOT CONTACT ME THROUGH COMPANY CHANNELS.
Marcus looked at the date.
Five days before Abigail's death.
"Then he disappeared."
"Yes."
Daniel looked at him.
"Maybe to stay alive."
Jenna had been quietly checking the storage room.
She stopped beside the door.
"Someone accessed this box yesterday."
Daniel looked sharply at her.
"Impossible."
"The seal tape was cut and replaced."
Daniel checked it himself.
His face changed.
"Only I have the key."
Marcus looked at the key in Daniel's hand.
"Only you?"
Daniel said nothing.
Nathan reached into the box and lifted the final document.
It was not an old file.
The paper was new.
Someone had placed it there recently.
Across the top was a draft Vance Global board resolution.
It proposed removing Marcus as chief executive pending an investigation into personal misconduct and governance risk.
The proposed temporary CEO was Grant Brennan.
The resolution already contained three electronic signatures.
Three directors.
Marcus recognized every name.
The board meeting was less than an hour away.
Daniel stared at the page.
"They already have votes."
Nathan shook his head.
"Not enough."
Marcus read the bottom of the resolution.
A fourth signature line had been prepared.
The name beneath it made him stop breathing for a second.
ELEANOR VANCE, AS PROPOSED GUARDIAN REPRESENTATIVE OF THE LEO VANCE SUBTRUST.
Marcus understood.
They had planned to use Eleanor's emergency custody filing as evidence that the guardian clause was active.
Even if the interpretation was legally wrong, the dispute itself could create enough confusion to swing nervous directors.
"They never intended to wait for a judge," Marcus said.
Nathan nodded.
"They intended to create the appearance of authority."
Daniel looked at the clock.
6:24 a.m.
"The board meeting starts in thirty-six minutes."
Marcus folded the resolution.
His anger became calm again.
"Good."
Nathan looked at him.
"Good?"
Marcus placed the document inside his coat.
"Grant thinks I'm walking into a trap."
"For once, I'd like him to be right."
The drive from the records facility to Vance Global took nineteen minutes.
Nobody spoke for the first six.
Daniel sat in the rear seat staring at the city through rain-speckled glass.
Marcus finally looked at him.
"Why did you keep the file after my mother told you to destroy copies?"
Daniel did not pretend not to understand.
"Because I didn't trust her conclusion."
"About Eleanor?"
"About everyone."
Daniel turned toward him.
"Abigail believed people could be redirected if you understood their motive."
"I believed leverage was safer."
Nathan, sitting in front, gave a dry laugh.
"And there is Daniel Cross in one sentence."
Daniel ignored him.
"I kept the file because if Abigail was wrong, I wanted proof."
Marcus looked at the resolution in his hand.
"And if she was right?"
Daniel's expression became tired.
"Then keeping it made me part of the problem."
Marcus did not expect the admission.
"Why help now?"
"Because someone attacked my storage box before you did."
"Because Grant is using legal work I prepared as though it gives him authority it does not give him."
"And because Abigail was right about one thing I hated."
Marcus waited.
"You do eventually stop being stupid when the stakes become personal enough."
Nathan turned around.
"She never said that."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"She implied it constantly."
Marcus looked toward the Vance tower appearing between buildings.
"What if the board removes me?"
Nathan answered first.
"Then we deal with it."
Marcus frowned.
"That's your legal strategy?"
"It is your mother's strategy."
"Child first."
"Truth second."
"Company third."
"Your title is somewhere below that."
Marcus hated the calmness of the statement.
He also needed it.
By the time the car reached the underground entrance, he had decided something.
He would not walk into the boardroom demanding loyalty.
He would give the directors facts and let them choose.
May you like
If they removed him after that, then power had to mean accepting a result he could not force.
That decision made him calmer than any plan for victory had.
