Chapter 13 - Maria's Real Invitation.

Marcus returned to the estate shortly after nine.

Two black sedans were parked beyond the front gate.

One belonged to Eleanor's legal team.

The other belonged to a court-appointed process server.

Marcus found the irony almost insulting.

Eleanor had filed the very petition everyone now knew was built on a false interpretation of the trust.

That meant one of two things.

Either she was still following the original plan despite knowing it had failed.

Or she was afraid of something worse than losing the trust.

Maria met Marcus in the breakfast room with Leo sleeping in her arms.

She looked as though she had not slept either.

"They served papers."

"I know."

"Mrs. Vance says I may have to testify."

"You probably will."

Maria looked at Leo.

"I don't want him turned into evidence."

Marcus pulled out a chair.

"Neither do I."

"But right now the only way to protect him may be to tell the truth clearly enough that nobody can use half of it."

Maria sat.

"There is another truth I haven't told you."

Marcus almost laughed from exhaustion.

"At this point, that sentence should be printed on the family crest."

Maria smiled despite herself.

Then the smile disappeared.

"The agency letter that brought me here wasn't the only thing I received."

Marcus looked at her.

"What else?"

"A second envelope."

"It came after I accepted the job."

"Inside was a photograph of your mother."

"On the back, someone had written, 'Keep your promise.'"

Marcus felt tension return.

"Did you still have it?"

"Yes."

"At home."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Maria's eyes filled with embarrassment.

"Because it sounded strange."

"I thought maybe someone from the family knew I had cared for her and wanted to make the job feel meaningful."

"I didn't think I was part of an investigation."

Nathan entered the breakfast room with a folder under his arm.

Marcus told him.

Nathan sat immediately.

"We need that letter."

Maria nodded.

"My sister can bring it."

"No."

Nathan shook his head.

"Nobody moves it until Jenna sees where it has been stored."

Maria looked worried.

"Is my sister in danger?"

Marcus answered carefully.

"Probably not."

"But I don't want to assume anything anymore."

Jenna arranged for two security officers to accompany Maria to her apartment in White Plains.

Marcus wanted Maria to stay with Leo.

Maria refused.

"If someone has been through my things, I'll know."

She was right.

Leo stayed with Marcus and Celeste for the first time since the crisis began.

The experience humbled Marcus in a way no boardroom ever had.

Leo cried after Maria left.

Marcus walked him through the library, the sunroom, and three laps around the upstairs gallery.

He tried a bottle.

Leo pushed it away.

He tried the small stuffed elephant clipped to the carrier.

Leo threw it.

Celeste watched from the doorway with amusement.

"He knows you're nervous."

Marcus frowned.

"I'm not nervous."

Leo began crying louder.

Celeste raised one eyebrow.

"Of course not."

Marcus looked at his son.

"We run a global company together one day and you betray me over a bottle."

Leo stared at him with wet eyes.

Then grabbed his tie.

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Marcus laughed.

The moment lasted ten seconds.

His phone rang.

Nathan.

"The court set an emergency conference for two this afternoon."

"Today?"

"Eleanor's lawyers claimed immediate risk."

Marcus looked at Leo.

"Based on the edited video."

"Based on the video and an affidavit."

"Whose?"

Nathan hesitated.

"Grant Brennan's."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Even suspended, Grant was still moving pieces.

"What does he say?"

"That he personally witnessed you behaving erratically at the estate."

Marcus almost admired the nerve.

"He witnessed me discover that he planted jewelry in Maria's locker."

"Which is why our response will include the security footage."

Marcus looked at the clock.

"And Maria?"

"Her testimony matters."

"If she is willing."

Marcus did not want to force her.

He also knew Eleanor's petition directly accused Maria of interfering with parental access.

Maria returned at eleven with Jenna and a sealed evidence bag.

"Apartment untouched," Jenna said.

"As far as we can tell."

Inside the bag was the second envelope Maria had described.

The handwriting on the back of Abigail's photograph did not match Abigail's known writing.

Nathan noticed immediately.

"This wasn't from your mother."

Marcus looked at Maria.

"Someone wanted you to think it was."

Maria stared at the photograph.

"Then who brought me here?"

Nathan checked the original agency letter.

Cole Family Services.

The address at the bottom belonged to a suite in Manhattan.

Jenna searched the business record.

The company had existed for four months.

It was dissolved three weeks after Maria was hired.

Its registered agent was a service company.

The service company's client was another LLC.

That LLC led to Northline Advisory.

Grant's private intelligence company.

Maria sat down slowly.

"Grant hired me?"

Marcus felt anger return.

"Maybe."

Nathan shook his head.

"Not necessarily."

"Elliot had access to Northline infrastructure before Grant bought the firm."

"The recruitment could have been Elliot."

Maria looked between them.

"Why would either man want me here?"

Marcus thought of Abigail's video.

Trust the person who protects the child when nobody is watching.

"Maybe because my mother told Elliot about you."

Nathan nodded.

"And Elliot decided Abigail had chosen correctly."

Maria's eyes filled.

"Without asking me."

The sentence carried anger now.

Marcus understood it.

Everyone had been manipulating her in the name of protection.

Abigail.

Elliot.

Grant, perhaps.

Even Marcus had begun making decisions around her without asking.

"You're right," he said.

Maria looked at him.

"About what?"

"You should have been asked."

"And I'm asking now."

Marcus sat across from her.

"You do not owe this family anything because my mother trusted you."

"You do not owe me testimony."

"You do not owe Leo your life."

Maria looked toward the nursery.

"I know."

"Then what do you want?"

She thought for a long moment.

"I want the people using that baby to stop."

Marcus nodded.

"So do I."

Maria lifted her chin.

"Then I will testify."

At one-thirty, Nathan's legal team began preparing Maria for the emergency conference.

They asked her to describe the hallway chronologically.

No adjectives.

No guesses.

Only what she saw and heard.

Maria did.

Eleanor approached.

Eleanor demanded Leo.

Maria said he was frightened.

Eleanor moved aggressively toward her.

Maria backed away.

Marcus entered.

Eleanor changed her account.

Marcus stated he had witnessed the incident.

The simplicity of the truth was stronger than the edited video.

At 1:52, Jenna received a call.

Her expression changed.

"We found the original hallway audio."

Marcus turned.

"I thought it was deleted."

"The security server copy was."

"But the chandelier control system has an acoustic sensor for voice commands."

Nathan stared.

"It recorded the room?"

"Not intentionally."

"The diagnostic buffer captured thirty seconds before the privacy command fully propagated."

Marcus almost laughed.

The crystal chandelier Eleanor had stood beneath had become the witness nobody planned for.

Jenna played the recovered audio.

Eleanor's voice came through clearly.

"You are just the help."

Maria answered.

"He's afraid."

Then Eleanor.

"Give him to me before I have you arrested."

Maria.

"Marcus told me to watch him."

Then footsteps.

Then Eleanor's voice changing.

"Marcus! Thank goodness you're here."

Nathan looked at Marcus.

"That goes to the judge."

Marcus nodded.

Maria closed her eyes.

For the first time since the hallway confrontation, someone had captured the exact instant the performance began.

Then Maria's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She looked at Marcus.

"Should I answer?"

Jenna nodded and activated recording.

Maria put the call on speaker.

A man's voice spoke.

"Maria Alvarez?"

"Yes."

"You don't know me."

Maria looked at Marcus.

The voice continued.

"My name is Elliot Reed."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Where are you?"

Elliot ignored him.

"Maria, I owe you an apology."

Her face hardened.

"For what?"

"For bringing you into the Vance house without telling you why."

Maria stared at the phone.

"You hired me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because Abigail asked me to find one person who would choose Leo over the adults around him."

Maria's eyes filled.

"Leo wasn't born."

"She said there would be a child someday."

Elliot's voice lowered.

"And she was afraid the wrong people would realize what that child represented."

Marcus stepped in.

"Who are the wrong people?"

This time Elliot answered him.

May you like

"You are about to meet one of them in court."

The line went dead.
