Chapter 5: Christmas, One Year Later

Exactly one year later, snow covered the neighborhood.

Daniel and Sophie hosted Christmas dinner in their own home.

The guest list was small.

Rebecca Collins came.

Sophie's gymnastics coach came.

A few neighbors came.

There were no lies.

No secrets.

No fear.

After dinner Sophie handed Daniel a small wrapped box.

Inside was a framed photo of the two of them looking through the telescope together.

Written beneath it were six simple words.

Home isn't where you live.

Home is who loves you.

Daniel looked at his daughter with tears in his eyes.

"You saved me," he whispered.

She shook her head.

"We saved each other."

Outside, snowflakes drifted quietly across the yard.

Inside, the house was warm with laughter.

The missing money had eventually been recovered through the court.

His parents accepted responsibility and began repaying what they had taken.

But Daniel realized something far more valuable had been restored.

Trust.

Hope.

And the childhood Sophie deserved.

As father and daughter stepped outside to look at the stars through the telescope, Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

This Christmas, he hadn't just come home.

He had finally found it.
