The room fell silent.
The three people standing at the front door wore dark business coats and carried thick folders under their arms.
"Mr. Daniel Carter?" the older woman asked.
Daniel nodded.
"I'm Rebecca Collins from Veterans Financial Services. We've been trying to reach you for months."
His mother's face lost every bit of color.
Rebecca placed a folder on the dining room table.
"Our audit found that twenty-two thousand dollars in survivor and overseas deployment payments never reached the intended beneficiary."
Daniel frowned.

Daniel's hands began shaking.

Luxury furniture.
Electronics.
Vacations.
Restaurant bills.
Jewelry.
None of it had been spent on Sophie.
Daniel slowly looked around the room.
His father refused to meet his eyes.
His sister quietly wiped tears from her face.
Only his mother spoke.
"We were going to pay it back."
"No," Daniel replied quietly.
"You were hoping I'd never come home."
Sophie stood beside him, still trying to understand.
"Dad..."
He knelt beside her.
"I'm so sorry."
She hugged him tightly.

"I knew you'd come back."
For the first time in nearly a year, Daniel cried.
