Word spread quickly through town.
Neighbors who once praised Daniel's parents learned what had happened.
His church asked difficult questions.
His father's retirement board opened an ethics investigation.
His sister admitted she had known about the money.
"I thought Mom was borrowing it."
Daniel stared at her.
"For eleven months?"
She lowered her head.
"I was afraid."
Rebecca's investigation uncovered even more.
His parents had consulted a family lawyer months earlier.
They planned to petition for permanent guardianship.
Their argument was simple.
Daniel worked overseas.
Sophie needed "stable caregivers."
If Daniel had remained overseas another six months, the petition likely would have been filed.
Daniel felt physically sick.
They hadn't just stolen money.
They had nearly stolen his daughter.
His attorney filed civil claims to recover every dollar.
The court froze several bank accounts.
Daniel never celebrated.
He simply held Sophie's hand as they walked out of the courthouse.
"We're okay now," he whispered.
