Chapter 9 - The Man at the Gate.

At 11:08 a.m., Fort Belden went into a controlled security posture.
Dean Foster's credentials were suspended.
His photograph was distributed to gate personnel.
His office was sealed pending investigation.
Daniel remained at the civilian hospital because Emily asked him not to leave.
That decision cost him something professionally.
He made it without hesitation.
Captain Hayes handled military coordination.
Officer Turner handled the criminal case.
Daniel handled the one role he had nearly failed by assuming competence in every other area could substitute for it.
He stayed beside his daughter.
Emily slept for almost two hours.
When she woke, her first question was about Milo.
Daniel showed her a picture Captain Hayes had sent of the terrier asleep on his living room couch.
Emily smiled for the first time.
The smile lasted less than a second.
"I should've left the first time Ryan grabbed me."
Daniel put the phone down.
"You don't have to explain why you didn't."
"I keep thinking about it."
"Then think about what you do next, not what you should have done before."
Emily stared at him.
"That's a very Dad answer."
"I know."
"A very colonel answer."
"Unfortunately, those are the only two models available."
A tiny laugh escaped her.
Then she winced because her ribs hurt.
Daniel's face tightened.
Emily saw it.
"Don't look like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you're memorizing every bruise so you can punish yourself later."
Daniel looked away.
She had inherited Rebecca's ability to see him too clearly.
"I should have known."
Emily's expression became firm.
"Ryan was good at making sure you didn't."
Daniel did not argue.
He also did not use her words to excuse himself.
A nurse entered with paperwork.
Behind her came a hospital administrator and Officer Turner.
Turner's expression told Daniel there was news.
"We located Dean."
Daniel stood.
"Where?"
"Here."
Emily's face went pale.
Turner raised a hand.
"Not inside the building."
"Security cameras caught him in the employee parking structure twenty minutes ago."
"Why would he come here?"
Turner looked at Emily.
"We think he came for the silver phone."
Daniel frowned.
"Linda has it."
"Maybe Dean doesn't know that."
The hospital administrator spoke.
"He attempted to enter through a service gate using military identification."
"Security refused because the credential came back suspended."
"He left before officers arrived."
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Did he speak to anyone?"
Turner nodded.
"A night-shift orderly."
"Asked what floor maternity triage was on."
Emily pulled the blanket closer.
Daniel's posture changed.
"Move her."
The administrator nodded.
"We're already arranging a private room under restricted access."
"No public directory listing."
"Only approved staff."
Emily looked at Daniel.
"Dad, what if he just wants to talk?"
Daniel answered gently.
"Then he can talk to police."
Turner added.
"Dean is now wanted for questioning in Martin's assault and theft."
"He doesn't get a private conversation with you."
Emily nodded.
As staff prepared the transfer, Daniel received a call from an unknown number.
Turner saw the screen.
"Speaker."
Daniel answered.
"Mercer."
Dean Foster's voice came through.
"You always answer like you're at work."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Where are you?"
Dean laughed once.
"You know I won't tell you."
"Then why call?"
"Because Linda is going to ruin all of us."
Turner signaled for a technician to start tracing the call.
Daniel kept his tone even.
"You assaulted Martin."
"He grabbed me first."
"You stole the trust binder."
"I took what Linda was going to destroy."
"Where is it?"
Dean ignored the question.
"You think I'm the villain because that's easy."
Daniel looked through the glass at Emily being transferred to a wheelchair.
"You used military systems to falsify a medical record about my daughter."
Dean went silent.
"Explain the hard version of that."
Dean exhaled.
"I needed money."
"There isn't a version where that sentence helps you."
"I know."
For the first time, Dean sounded tired rather than defensive.
"Linda had pictures."
Daniel frowned.
"Of what?"
"Me at a casino when I was supposed to be at a command conference."
"She had loan records."
"She knew about every stupid thing I was hiding."
"So you sold her my schedule."
"At first."
"Then she needed the medical note."
"And you made it happen."
Dean's voice dropped.
"Yes."
Daniel closed his eyes for half a second.
"Why are you calling me now?"
"Because Ryan played me a recording."
Daniel opened his eyes.
"What recording?"
"Linda talking about me after the trust transferred."
"She said I would become a liability."
Turner and Daniel exchanged a look.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning she never planned to pay me."
"Meaning she planned to hand police everything she had on me."
Daniel's voice stayed flat.
"And that surprises you?"
Dean ignored the insult.
"I have the original codicil."
"I know."
"Linda wants it."
"I know."
"I want the silver phone."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"We don't have it."
Dean went quiet.
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
"Linda took it from Ryan's apartment."
The silence on the line changed.
Dean had not known.
"Then she has everything," he whispered.
"Not everything."
"You don't understand."
Dean's breathing became faster.
"That phone has messages from me too."
"Yes."
"And from someone else."
Daniel felt a new tension settle over the call.
"Who?"
Dean hesitated.
"The person Linda answers to."
Daniel looked at Turner.
"I thought Linda was running this."
Dean laughed bitterly.
"So did I."
"Who is it?"
"I'll tell you when I'm safe."
"You assaulted a man and stole legal documents."
"Safe is not currently one of your options."
Dean's voice sharpened.
"You want the name or not?"
Daniel kept him talking.
"Tell me where the binder is."
"Not until I get protection."
"You don't negotiate with me."
"Then negotiate with Turner."
Dean knew the detective was there.
That detail chilled Daniel.
Turner leaned toward the phone.
"Dean, this is Detective Turner."
"Tell me where you are and we can arrange a controlled surrender."
Dean laughed quietly.
"Not at the hospital."
"I'm not stupid."
Turner signaled to the trace technician.
The technician held up three fingers.
Almost there.
Dean continued.
"Daniel, look at the trust chart."
"There are entities you don't recognize."
"One of them paid Linda's legal bills."
"One paid Martin's old firm."
"One bought Ryan's apartment."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What are you saying?"
"The apartment isn't Ryan's."
"Then whose is it?"
A car horn sounded faintly on Dean's end.
Turner wrote something on a pad.
Urban street.
Dean lowered his voice.
"Ask who owns Northstar Residential Holdings."
The trace technician pointed to a map on his tablet.
Turner read the location silently.
Dean was near the old river terminal.
"Dean," Daniel said.
"Stay on the line."
Dean suddenly went silent.
A second voice sounded near him.
A woman's voice.
"You should have taken my offer."
Linda.
Daniel stood.
"Dean?"
There was a scuffle.
The phone hit something hard.
Dean shouted.
Then the call ended.
Turner was already moving.
"We have the location."
Daniel looked at Emily.
She had heard enough to understand.
"Go," she said.
Daniel shook his head.
"I'm staying with you."
Emily looked directly at him.
"Then send everyone else."
Turner was already at the door.
"That's exactly what I'm doing."
The call ended, but the echo of Linda's voice remained in the room.
Emily stared at Daniel.
"She sounded calm."
"Yes."
"That's how she sounded with me too."
Daniel understood what she meant.
Linda's calmness had been part of the trap.
It made Emily's fear look excessive.
It made Ryan's panic look immature.
It made anyone who raised their voice appear to be the unstable person in the room.
"She used calm like a costume," Emily said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Then we don't judge truth by volume."
Emily looked at him.
"You really can turn anything into a rule."
"Occupational damage."
Her smile vanished quickly.
"Do you think Dean is going to hurt her?"
Daniel answered carefully.
"I think frightened people carrying leverage can make dangerous decisions."
"That's not the same as knowing what happened."
Emily nodded.
For once, uncertainty was allowed to stay uncertainty.
Forty minutes later, tactical officers found Dean Foster's phone shattered beside the river terminal.
There was no sign of Dean.
There was no sign of Linda.
But beneath a nearby bench, officers found the Mercer-Hale trust binder.
It was open to the emergency successor codicil.
May you like
And the page naming Daniel as successor trustee had been carefully cut out.
THE DOOR THAT LOCKED THEM IN
