Chapter 13 - The Name on the Deed.

Dean Foster gave his statement at 2:40 in the morning.

Daniel was not in the room.

Turner refused to let him be.

Daniel accepted that decision because he did not trust himself to look at Dean without seeing every Thanksgiving dinner and every lie layered beneath it.

Instead, he sat with Emily while Captain Hayes listened through an authorized remote briefing.

At 3:15, Hayes stepped into the hallway and called him.

"Dean says Victor is heading to the apartment building."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

"There's something in the building records Victor needs."

"What records?"

"Property ownership documents and original camera storage."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"The apartment cameras?"

"Not the corridor cameras."

"Inside."

Daniel stood.

"There are cameras inside Emily's apartment?"

Captain Hayes went quiet.

"Dean says Northstar installed them before Ryan and Emily moved in."

Daniel felt the world narrow.

"Where?"

"He only knows about two."

"Living room and office."

"He thinks there may be more."

Daniel looked toward Emily's closed door.

"Does she know?"

"Not yet."

Daniel entered the room and told her himself.

Emily stared at him in stunned silence.

Then her face changed from shock to fury.

"They watched me?"

Daniel sat beside her.

"We don't know how much."

"They owned the apartment."

"They chose the cameras."

"They gave me a home and watched me inside it."

Her voice shook.

"Was there one in the bedroom?"

"We don't know."

Emily looked away.

Daniel felt helpless in a way battlefields had never taught him to tolerate.

"I'm sorry."

Emily wiped tears from her face.

"Stop apologizing for things other people did."

"I'm trying."

"Try harder."

Daniel nodded.

That response seemed to help more than comfort would have.

Police secured the apartment building before dawn.

Victor did not appear.

But the property manager, after receiving a warrant, turned over original lease records and security contracts.

Northstar Residential Holdings had purchased the apartment eighteen months before Ryan proposed to Emily.

The purchase was cash.

Victor Hale Junior was the beneficial owner behind Northstar.

Linda had signed the management authorization.

Ryan had presented the apartment to Emily as a wedding gift from his family.

It had never belonged to him.

It had been chosen for surveillance.

A forensic sweep found four hidden cameras.

One in the living room smoke detector.

One inside a bookshelf in the office.

One in the kitchen ceiling vent.

And one in the hallway facing the bedroom door.

There was no camera inside the bedroom.

Emily cried when Daniel told her that.

Not because the news was good.

Because she had reached the point where being relieved about one missing camera felt like evidence of how much had been taken from her.

The camera storage had been routed to a locked network cabinet in the building's basement.

Northstar paid for the private server.

Victor had remote administrative access.

So did Linda.

So did Ryan.

Daniel stared at that last name.

"Ryan knew?"

Turner nodded.

"His login accessed footage twenty-six times."

"Most access occurred while Emily was home alone."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"He watched her."

"Looks that way."

"Did Linda?"

"Hundreds of accesses."

"Victor?"

"Fewer."

"But enough."

Investigators recovered archived clips Victor had apparently attempted to delete remotely.

The deletion failed because the system maintained a secondary cache.

The first recovered clip showed Emily in the living room four months earlier.

She held a suitcase.

Ryan stood between her and the front door.

The camera had no audio.

It did not need much.

Emily tried to move around him.

Ryan blocked her.

She pointed toward the door.

Ryan grabbed the suitcase and threw it across the room.

Emily flinched.

Daniel could not continue watching.

Turner stopped the video.

"We have to document it."

"I know."

"You don't have to watch."

Daniel looked toward the screen.

"She did."

Turner understood.

The second clip had audio.

Linda sat at the kitchen table with Ryan.

Emily was not home.

Linda slid papers across the table.

"You need three more incidents before the petition looks credible."

Ryan pushed the papers back.

"I'm not creating incidents."

Linda's eyes narrowed.

"You already have."

"I'm telling you to document them."

Ryan stood.

"I'm done with this conversation."

Linda said something that froze him.

"Then I'll show Emily the video from February."

Ryan stopped moving.

Daniel looked at Turner.

"What happened in February?"

The answer appeared in another recovered clip.

Ryan had shoved Emily during an argument near the kitchen.

She hit the counter and fell.

Ryan immediately dropped beside her.

He appeared horrified.

Linda entered from the hallway less than a minute later.

She did not help Emily first.

She looked directly at the hidden camera.

Then she smiled.

Daniel's stomach turned.

Linda had been building a library of Ryan's violence.

Not to protect Emily.

To control Ryan.

The next clip was from the night before Daniel arrived.

It filled in the missing hours.

At 6:31, Emily entered the living room carrying the custody folder.

Ryan followed.

They argued.

Emily tried to leave.

Ryan grabbed her wrist.

She pulled away and fell against the couch.

Ryan froze.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Ryan stepped back.

He appeared to say something.

There was no audio from that camera angle.

Emily pointed toward the office.

Ryan nodded.

At 6:50, he left the apartment.

At 7:42, Linda entered.

Emily confronted her immediately.

Linda took the folder.

Emily reached for it.

Linda shoved her backward.

Emily stumbled out of camera view toward the bedroom hallway.

Linda followed.

The hallway camera captured the rest.

Emily tried to close the bedroom door.

Linda pushed through.

The door shut behind them.

Seven minutes later, Linda came out alone.

She stood in the hallway and adjusted her cardigan.

Then she looked directly into the hidden camera.

"She'll cooperate now."

The words were captured clearly.

Daniel's face became stone.

At 8:02, Ryan returned carrying the black duffel bag.

That timestamp conflicted with the earlier corridor footage because investigators had initially read the wrong camera clock offset.

The corrected timeline placed his return after Linda had already confronted Emily.

Ryan entered the bedroom.

He came out forty seconds later, angry.

He argued with Linda in the hall.

Audio from the hallway camera captured him.

"What did you do?"

Linda answered.

"What you should have done months ago."

Ryan said.

"Get out."

Linda laughed.

"You don't own this apartment."

The sentence now carried literal truth.

The footage continued.

Ryan moved toward the front door.

Linda stopped him with one sentence.

"Daniel is already on his way."

Ryan froze.

"How do you know?"

"Dean."

Ryan looked toward the bedroom.

"Then I'm telling him."

Linda stepped closer.

"And showing him what?"

"The videos of you hurting her?"

"The forged documents with your fingerprints?"

"The transfer authorization you signed?"

Ryan's face collapsed.

Linda touched his shoulder.

"You are going to stand behind that bed and let Emily say she fell."

"Because if you don't, you lose everything."

Ryan whispered.

"I already lost everything."

The clip ended.

Turner looked at Daniel.

"This doesn't clear him."

"No."

"But it proves Linda assaulted Emily last night."

"And it proves coercion around the cover story."

Daniel nodded.

The evidence was finally separating guilt instead of blending everyone into one accusation.

Ryan was responsible for months of abuse and surveillance.

Linda was responsible for manipulation, assault, fraud, and the larger financial scheme.

Dean had corrupted official systems for money.

Victor financed the structure that made all of it possible.

Martin had hidden the truth until silence became complicity.

Daniel had ignored signs because he mistook distance for respect.

And Emily had been forced to survive inside all of their decisions.

The property records answered another question Emily had carried for months.

Ryan had repeatedly threatened to make her leave because the apartment was "his family's place."

Every time she packed a bag, he reminded her she had nowhere comparable to go.

In reality, the home had been selected before their engagement and purchased by people planning to use it as leverage.

The knowledge made Emily furious, but it also broke one of the lies that had kept her there.

"I kept thinking leaving meant admitting I had failed at marriage," she told Daniel.

"They made the apartment feel like proof that I had been given some perfect life."

Daniel listened.

"And every time I wanted out, I thought about how ungrateful I would look."

She laughed bitterly.

"It wasn't even a gift."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Emily looked at the recovered ownership documents.

"Good."

Daniel frowned.

"Good?"

"I don't want one brick of it."

Turner received a call from the forensic server team.

"They recovered a remote session from last night."

"Victor logged into the camera system at 9:11."

Daniel frowned.

"After Linda assaulted Emily."

"Yes."

"What did he watch?"

Turner listened.

His face changed.

"He watched the hallway feed live."

Daniel went cold.

Victor had seen Linda enter the bedroom.

He had seen Ryan return.

He had seen Daniel arrive.

He had watched Daniel pull back the duvet.

He had watched the black remote rise in Daniel's hand.

Then, at 9:18, Victor sent a message from the camera server to Linda.

Turner read it aloud.

"The colonel knows."

A second message followed.

May you like

"End this tonight."
